OpenStreetMaps on Garmin Edge 1030 // Free International Maps for Garmin Edge GPS

Спорт

Garmin Edge units come with regional routable maps so travelling abroad to new and unfamiliar places can result in less functionality from your expensive head unit that supports 'turn by turn navigation'. Here's the step-by-step howto for loading international maps on an Edge 1030 (Australian Edition) that I followed this week so we could navigate our way around Los Angles and beyond! Remember to click SUBSCRIBE to support this KZread channel: goo.gl/QS5YZg
Custom OSM Recipe:
- Map source: garmin.openstreetmap.nl/
- Select: Routable Bicycle (Openfietsmap Lite)
- Select: Country/state (In this case it was United States / California)
- Download: openfietsmap_lite_gmapsupp.zip
- Unzip and copy gmapsupp.img to GARMIN in the \GARMIN directory.
- Start up the EDGE and ensure the map is enabled within the settings.
These maps are the free OpenStreetMap alternative to the US$50 maps supplied by Garmin themselves. They're also SUPER detailed. Right down to the wineries in the Santa Monica Mountains. :)

Note that each time you download a set from that site, the IMG file will alway be the same name, so if you later did Oregon/Washington for example and put the file on the 1030 you would overwrite the CA/NV that you had previously. Luckily, map names on the 1030 don't have to be a specific name like on the 520 I had previously. Before dragging to the Garmin folder on the device I always add a descriptive name to the file, so something like gmapsupp_CaNV.img for the first one, and then gmapsupp_OrWa.img for the second etc. etc. I don't know what the limit of map files is for the 1030, but I currently have 7 or 8 on mine for Oz/NZ and most of western Europe and they all work fine.

Hello Shane thanks a lot for your guide. Communicated with Garmin beforehand because i was ready to shell out 119€ for south east asian maps just to be safe before travelling to thailand this week. The only thing i wanted was to have them on both edge 1030 and 820 devices ( 1030 touring and long distance riding and 820 racing purposes) but there was no optimal solution for that only 1 device for download license or a sd card 😑. The friendly garmin staff still gave me some advice trying OSM maps with it without guarantee 😅. What to say it works so many thanks for that and before i forget happy christmas 🎄and new year 🎉. Keep up the good work together with dcrainmaker and friends. Greetings Sascha Team Laura Germany

I have been doing this for quite a while with my regular 520. It may have been said in the comments, but be mindful of the file size if you are using any "older" device with internal memory only. I did a 400 mile tour in a relatively dense area for mapping and I had just enough space on my 520 for all the necessary map panels.

Interesting the see others using this same technique and I'm in total agreement the maps should be free especially as they are using OpenStreetMap data now. It would be interesting to see a review on the different maps available (OpenStreetMap, Garmin Cycle, Garmin Topo, Garmin Active) for say the Garmin Edge 830 for both cycling off-road and tramping/hiking. Mainly how they route on backcountry tracks and the detail level for an off-road route (I say off road as this is often where things fall over due to lack of routing or detail).

There's a limit on how many maps can be loaded at the same time on the 1030, there's a thread on the Garmin forums that talks about "tile limits". TLDR: If you can see the OSM maps in your device but don't see any roads on your courses even the OSM map says "Enabled", you can disable the existing Garmin maps that come with your device. Then the new OSM maps will appear. Hope this helps someone else!

Great video, just a quick note: on older devices with limited memory you have to rename the file to gmapbmap and remove the old one so the new one can fit. Been doing it for years now i almost dont do it since i got my 820 explore that comes with the European maps. But i'm probably going to need to do it for the US next year.

Fuck it, yesterday I created a regional map of my zone and put it on my 520, removing the stock one (which is just... useless). Just tested it this evening. Fu***** amazing. Brootal change. With the stock one, on the road, just to follow tracks... well... it served, you only have to follow it and see that you are not going out of it (plus, the devide warns you)... other than that, nothing. But this is a whole new level. The context you get is amazing. I love it, because I love to read maps and I've used in the past, so having it on this GPS just boost its possibilities when you're out there following a track and being abe to take your own decissions when watching the environment on the screen. To navigate on the city with this map on the screen is perfect in case you need to check. Also lots of info. Road names, icons of places of interest (like some coffee shops and all). Just great. Thanks for this info! It was easier than I thought.

I bought my Garmin 1030 in Australia. It shipped with Aus Garmin maps and Aus OSM maps. Navigation was almost impossible with both map sets active. Sometimes when I attempted to load a course, my unit would reach 99% loaded and then cycle back to 0% loaded in an endless loop. On other occasions when my course did load, my Garmin would draw a straight red line from where I was to some seemingly random position 50km further into my route. I solved both of these problems by turning OSM maps off. I suspect that I would have had similar success if I had turned Garmin maps off instead, but I have not yet tested this. It would appear that the 1030 cannot cope with multiple active map sets where the maps sets cover the same region.

Why bother? Magellan has abandoned the Cyclo units. When it came out it was advertised as using OSM maps - but i don't think the magellan executives knew what they were talking about. Their maps were embedded in the units and can't be user installed like a proper OSM map. I've only had 1 map update since 2015 and no more updates since. Maps aside the Cyclo 505 can sure follow a route like a Predator laser guided bomb to it's target. And re-routing was super duper quick - i mean u turn off a street early and it will re-route in 3 seconds.

Try Mio. Megellan and Mio are the same units, but Mio still supports older devices with the latest maps update of this years March. Just download CycleAgent and it should update

How do u get the Aus maps back after ur home? Did u have to remove them due to memory constraints? If so, can u drag the garmin installed ones to ur laptop to save, then swap back later? I ask because new 540 can't hold full Europe due to their size with the stupid new freeclimb pro.

Do you have to disable all other maps on the device to make sure that the map you’ve just installed is used all the time? Or does the map you’ve downloaded instantly override the others?

I don't know to be honest. I've only ever loaded additional maps that weren't on the unit. One for Garmin Support.

You'll need to ping the owners of the sites supplying these maps. If the process I followed here doesn't work, something is up. No mountable file system sounds terminal... wrong USB cable type?

Hey, could you help me please? Can I use the Edge 1030 or other Garmin GPS for car and pedestrian nav? I intend go to Atacama and use the Garmin as a backup in case of mobile signal die, wherever I walking, driving or cycling. Thanks so much! Your video was very educational

Best use a phone app for car/pedestrian navigation. A lot of phone apps have those specific options for routing.

Big Lampar I feel like the map is good, but is not labeled with all the street names. I'm on the elemnt bolt, so the screen is small. In looking at the Garmin unit Shane is showing in this video, the unit is much larger and so it can have more detail. The bolt is more the size of the edge 510/520. Not sure if this helpful or not. Shane may have some better insight. Cheers!

They now have free global mapping. This video is years old. Don’t get stuck in the past and ignoring progress. That’s what our grandparents usually do.
