that's so cool, I love early Stones in mono, Brian Jones was a musical genius, an ace slide guitar player, not to mention all the reed instruments he could play..The UK editions of the various albums had a different track variation from the US releases.Alot of the Stones early works , 1964 particularly was inspired by black artists like Bo diddley, Howling Wolf, Jimmy Reed, Julian Cannon Ball Adderley. So you have hits like King Bee, Down the Road a Piece, Mona, Carol. Really love your collection ! 😃✌

Last night I listened to the 50th Anniversary edition mono LP of “Their Satanic Majesties Request” (I’m one of the people who like that album) anyway I had only ever heard the stereo version before. The mono version was so much more real, lively, dynamic and simply better, now I want all their 60’s albums in mono!

After going through the CD box visually and musically, I came up with some pros and cons. PROS - The sound is absolute top! Clean, bright, deep and extremely well balanced. You can hear Bill's bass coming through and Charlie's drums are also right there. All instruments are at the same level and working as a unit. Also, a bit of that annoying dirt like echo-ish reverb is gone! I like the cardboard type covers and the glossiness. The thick outer plastic sleeves protect the covers really well. The box itself is well made, sturdy and the front flap with the magnetic seal is a nice, sophisticated touch. CONS - The absence of inner sleeves for TSMR and LiB. The absence of the LiB poster. The CD labels are so so. Decca and London are printed, but are a far cry from the original labels. No Decca or London on front and back covers. No fold over flaps, (although some pressings in the 60's were released without the flaps). The booklet is rather thin and doesn't give you much information about the individual records. Some of the pictures are extremely dark. You can tell that no original artwork was used. More a copy of a copy. FINAL VERDICT - All focus was directed at getting the best sound quality back on these records and to give the listeners a feast for the ears. That was accomplished. But, from the beginning it was clear that something had to give and it seems that ABKO / Universal were not very concerned with the looks of this box or to give us a full journey back. Not only musically but visually. In terms of presentation The Beatles Mono won this one. In terms of sound, it's a draw.

Interesting that the "Got Live" (LP & EP) tracks are not included. Strange thing is that my 2nd. foray into collecting the Stones was the Box Set "The Stones Story" from Germany. The "Got Live" album is in true stereo, but when later released on CD it's in mono & included different version. The following year, I bought the "Rest of the Best..." and my copy included the single "C..S... Blues". The story is that when Jagger delivered the master for "Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out", He was told they needed one more song to be let out of their contract. Would love to be in the room when they played it, wonder if Mick stuck around?

Looks great......I am not big on Mono, and the earlier Stones. Flowers amd above is where I kick in as a major fan. I am not particular on some of the details regarding a song being a few minutes longer or not, or printing. Help me out, what would you say are the reasons I should consider Mono (other then that is how they intended it to sound). Let It Bleed, to me should not be Mono.......it is meant for stereo! Stray Cats album does look cool.

Well said Michael "giving credit where credit is due" for Brian. I love the mick Taylor years and their albums no doubt, but they were fairly one dimensional after Brian in their feel. It was a great feel no doubt, but they were much more risk taking with Brian. When I argue with Stones fans they always rip the Jones Stones albums compared to theothers. They don't relise that all bands were singles focused before Dylan and then the Beatles. But with Aftermath on, they made solid albums with Brian (Aftermath, Buttons, Santanic, Beggars)
@MichaelTHX11387 жыл бұрын
Sound is punchy, centered and really together! Awesome job! But, can somebody explain to me why they cropped the picture for TSMR?!! What is the reason behind that? Paul and George’s faces are obviously missing!
@56dinosaur7 жыл бұрын
Thanks Michael. I've seen enough to see that ABKCO's reproduction of the album covers is less than authentic. I wasn't expecting "Their Satanic Majesties Request" to have the lenticular(3-D) album cover, but ABKCO's new version doesn't even properly reproduce the later (1970's) non-3D version. This new version features an enlarged, cropped version of the photo. That's why you didn't see two of the hidden Beatles pictures. I wish that you had let us see what the labels look like. Are they London, Decca or ABKCO labels? ABKCO always finds a way to screw up any Rolling Stones archival project that they do, whether it's the electronically reprocessed stereo tracks on "side one" of "Metamorphosis", the use of an unfinished rough mix of "Ruby Tuesday"(missing one of the harmony voices during the chorus) throughout the 2002 SACD series. The problem is that ABKCO will never permit anyone other than their insiders (Jody Klein,Terri Landi) to handle tape research and analog to digital transfers. Jagger & Rchards had to decide whether to let the unreleased(but already bootlegged) 1963-1965 Rolling Stones recordings enter UK/Europe Public Domain (and become legally bootleggable in the Uk & Europe) or let ABKCO release the recordings officially. Not surprisingly, Jagger & Richards decided to let the recordings enter public domain. On an official release, ABKCO would have found some way to screw things up. But ABKCO has the last laugh. Labels releasing these recordings as public domain material still have to pay song publishing royalties to ABKCO for Jagger/Richards compositions. And, by the way, "Con Le Mie Lacrime" is an ITALIAN language version of "As Tears Go By". Many years ago, a friend copied for me de-clicked bootlegs CD-R's of the mono versions of "Aftermath(UK)", "Between The Buttons(UK)", "Flowers", "Their Satanic Majesties Request" & "Beggars Banquet", all expanded with unreleased bonus tracks. I'll stick with those rather than buy ABKCO's new CD or vinyl boxes. At least all of the mixes I've got are correct, as heard on the original 1960's vinyl. By the way, the mono "Beggars Banquet" is (excepting "Sympathy For The Devil") a fold-down from the stereo mix. The UK mono "Let it Bleed" is also a fold-down. The same is true for any 1964 Chess Studios recordings. Engineer Ron Malo(interviewed in the early 1980's in the long-defunct magazine "Modern Recording and Music") stated that he mixed The Rolling Stones' Chess recordings only in stereo, but that somebody re-copied them into mono.

The reissue cover for Aftermath is completely out of proportion! Half of Keith's and Charlie's heads are missing. I agree that the most important thing is the sound quality. But everything else was done half hearted. I will go with the CD version. At least I won't have to look at this lack of attention in the 12x12 format. I'm perfectly happy with my 2002 sacds, why would someone dish that kind of dough for (let's be honest) shitty repro cover art and the same quality digital recordings that have been available for nearly 15 years? Because mono? Ok, IF they had the "Beatles mono" vinyl treatment, then maybe.

I agree, the beatles set in comparison is way way ahead because of the analog source material. Guess that was just impossible here though because of multiple sources and complexities so they claim? The book in the beatles mono set is a lot nicer and they're way closer to the originals as far as artwork/labels. This just looks flimsy and not put together so well but I suppose I'd buy it if it were a good deal still. Anyone know what the source material is on the kinks mono vinyl set?

Everything here seems to be an inferior version of what The Beatles in Mono vinyl box set gave us. All analog sourced vinyl for The Beatles. Digital sourced vinyl for the Stones. German pressed vinyl for The Beatles. Czech pressed vinyl for the Stones. Nice hardcover book for The Beatles. Flimsy paperback book for the Stones. Flipback jackets for the Beatles. Non-flipback jackets for the Stones. Good color reproduction on the jackets for The Beatles. Muted, poorly-colored jackets for the Stones. Nice, solid single-piece foldback lid on the box for the The Beatles. An unwieldy-looking foldback lid for the Stones. They even used the crappy plastic sleeves with the adhesive on the flap that makes it difficult to remove the LP jacket without it sticking. The adhesive should be on the outer side of the plastic sleeve, where it won't come in contact with the jacket as it's being removed. Lots of minor nitpicks, of course, since it's the music that counts... and hopefully the sound quality will be a real winner. But add up all of those nitpicks and it's clear that the devil is in the details. As a Stones fan, I wish they had given this box the same attention that Apple gave to The Beatles in Mono.

+Analog Planet I'm hoping to be pleasantly surprised by reports that the vinyl sounds great... which is the most important thing, of course. But just by looking at the visual aspects of the box set that you unpackaged here, I'm not as impressed as I was with the Beatles box. Then again, it's hard to think of many box sets that meet that quality standard.
@bareknuckles2u

Thanks for that detail. I was aware that the Stones catalog is a lot more messy than the Beatles catalog was, but this articulates it well. In some respects, I would be happy if they just stuck with the UK releases for the Stones, then issued any of the other tracks as part of an extended Stray Cats compilation within the box. Regarding the Beatles US releases, I always figured that was a nostalgia project aimed at a certain group of American fans from that era who grew up with those versions (myself included), while the UK releases remain the "true" core of the catalog. So if reconstructing the US releases was more of a challenge, I didn't find it quite to bothersome.

Good point the whole idea are great but The Stones just wanna save some money with cheap manufactured. I note much of their last material like books and boxset are made in China where they made all with low quality. And yeah The Beatles Mono boxset look very more atractive.

2:20. Giving credit where credit is due. You got that right Brian Jones forever

Black Cherry you’re English is great
I wish to buy this collection.
Just like a kid in a record store
Looks great! It's now on my list. 🤓

great video really, I have 7 of the albums on pure virgin vinyl, I do have a question though when they release these kinds of albums , are they really using the first generation tapes while mixing
Impressive box set ! I'll be surprised if it stands up to your originals though. In any event you're sure to enjoy it.
Sound is punchy, centered and really together! Awesome job! But, can somebody explain to me why they cropped the picture for TSMR?!! What is the reason behind that? Paul and George’s faces are obviously missing!

Hey Michael. Many thanks for this pre-release look! Can you tell me if they included the inner sleeve for TSMR? I assume no poster for Let it Bleed? A shame about the missing Decca labels. Do the US albums have different texture? Cardboard like?

I think it does have the inner sleeve for TSMR.
When I first got Blue Moves on vinyl, I thought that copy belonged to some guy Patrick Proctor. I found out after he was the painting artist.
I’ve just upgraded from the cd mono box which was cheap tacky to the Japanese 7inch SHCD which is much more beautiful package.
Hi Michael, are they going to release the individual albums?

Analog Planet Thanks, that's disappointing because I didn't really want the whole box set, I did get the Beatles mono box but wanted to cherry pick from the Stones, oh well, great review by the way.
LOL! “You couldn’t even show a toilet seat!” 🤣

Again, thank you Michael for sharing this hot out of the oven.

I want this. All I have are the Fake stereo copies
Why you don't show the record?
I have some mono and some stereo versions of Brian era Stones and the mono sound much better
hahaha, that's great man!
no idea what those original stones LP's are worth . never liked fake stereo , not that I can tell . really enjoy that pure mono sound

looks like an awesome set,but the price is astronomical sadly!
'This is not a great album anyways..but you know, you can see the Beatles here, you know..the Beatles are in here'..LMAO..
I'm sure these sound great, and I look forward to the review, that being said; $400 for digital transfers? I'm perfectly happy with my 2002 sacds, why would someone dish that kind of dough for (let's be honest) shitty repro cover art and the same quality digital recordings that have been available for nearly 15 years? Because mono? Ok, IF they had the "Beatles mono" vinyl treatment, then maybe.

You can't understand the passion and the memories, also the love for vinyl sound (mono or stereo is just personal preference). And he is a person who has the ORIGINAL releases and that is like purchasing them again for the first time. You can listen to "Paint it Black" in your SACD's but it's not the same, never it will be.

But this is the only way to get the first UK album and No. 2 on actual releases. I had to download a 1989 CD that I found on torrent to get it.
You pay for that stuff or is it free
Do what I do: buy the original mono pressings (often quite pricey!).
OH SHIT THIS MAN PREDICTED 2020/2021 AT 8:09
06:06 😂

And yeah The Beatles Mono boxset look very more atractive.
when records died we remembered the road wasn't even cleaning better than accessories
Hey now Satanic Majesties Request is a great album 👌
This issue of satanic majasties request has Paul and Ringo of cropped out
I have the originals, one mono, one stereo...
On the newer versions of Their Satanic Majesties Request album you will only see John Lennon and George Harrison they zoomed Paul McCartney and Ringo Star out look at your 3D cover you will see the difference .

You are welcome and keep up the good work Michael your videos do help us all to decide if these new Vinyl box sets are worth it or not... This one here I will get on CD only and the sound on those Mono tracks do sound a lot better than past releases not everyone will agree but that's ok too .....
Hey Michael, any input on this supposed to be repressed ?
I don't know why they didn't decide to make them flip-backs. To save some coin? that's disappointing. Also wish they had quality checked the cover art and put the Decca label as per the originals. Compared with the Beatles in Mono box ..this one gets a B-, could have put a bit more effort in. Yes I am a stickler for detail.
Where are the original analog master tapes Alan Klein? The don't exist anymore!
Who says you're not a kid?
I don't see why anyone would want reissues. There's nothing better than the originals. I rest my case..
Also very eerie how you said we will be back to the cancelling stuff if we aren’t careful then low and behold 5-6 years after this video was made look where our country is at... terrible
The contrast on the images of the re-issues looks terrible compared to the originals.

Her Satanic Magesties is a great record, though.
You need some cable management. That room is a mess.
Production looks just OK. Also don't know why everyone watching wasted 2 minutes of their life waiting for you to open package !!
Nope. Why couldn't they even get the artwork correct?Far(very far) from the Beatles mono treatment.
I'm not excited.
This is awesome but it’s too much becoming HOARDER
