Opening a Safe with Dynamite and Shaped Charges

Ordnance Lab takes dynamite and shaped charges to a gun-safe to see what happens.
If you're a safe manufacturer and want to test your safe against high-explosives, shaped charges, hand-grenades, and other legit ordnance; contact us at info@ordnance-lab.com and we'll see what we can do.
We can also provide Research & Development assistance for businesses looking to simulate threats from the modern battlefield, such as Explosively Formed Penetrators, grenades, Claymore mines, and various incendiary weapons.
We are not attorneys, so nothing on here is legal advice. Any comments on the legalities of explosives is just random stuff we just made up to sound cool on KZread. Plus with our lack of operator beards; 5.11 or Gruntstyle apparel; and not using the terms "tactical", "bro", or various potential incarnations of "operator"; it's clear we are basically KZread Stolen Valor posers who have no idea what they're talking about.
Using explosives is a terrible idea, with potentially Darwinian or legal consequences. If you're going to be an idiot and start making explosives or whatever, make sure you consult with a lawyer about both the legalities surrounding explosives, and how you want your estate handled after your departure from this lifetime (though we would very much appreciate any divine intervention you could possibly offer from the great beyond, as long as you're not watching us in the shower or anything creepy like that).

@David Tigwell very true. I was just pointing out that it didn't matter in this case and also I do know that distance is required to establish a proper penatration jet. Edit: I got to thinking about the subject of designing shape charges that wouldn’t require a strick hold off distance to achieve proper results I had discussed with a friend in the industry and it appears that is exactly what he has acquired in the film. Look it up, they state on their website it doesn’t matter.

As noted by several commenters, the shaped charges used here were designed for oil well perforating. They are capable of blowing a 1/4" hole about 4 feet into solid rock. The really interesting this is how little explosive is required to do that. Some of them only use 12-14 grams of high explosive.

Easiest way to get into a big box store safe is just cut the side off with an angle grinder. Takes about 5 minutes. I used to sell Liberty safes and the only difference in security between the $400 and $4,000 models is the $4,000 models have more drywall to break through after you cut through the side. Forget the door- that’s the only difficult part to get through.

Great video, very fun. If you get another safe, use linear shaped charges and set them .5 inches in from the edge of the door. In essences create a frame on the face of the door. The linear charges will shear the pins holding the door on and it will just fall open without damaging the stuff inside. it will also disable the CS vials used as deterrent. Great videos, brings back some great memories.

If you can get a charge in to a locked safe after filling it with water the effect of any explosion is greatly exaggerated. You will of course need to seal the door and any bolt holes to prevent leakage, and there is the obvious possibility of causing damage to any contents but it sure is the most economical method.

Ah, explosives! Substances that almost instantly transform from a solid into a hot gas, without losing any density. A shock wave passing through the explosive breaks chemical bonds, releasing enough energy to drive the shock wave onward. Products of this chemical dance don't lose any mass, so the density of the block is unchanged until it expands.

I have blown open a safe very similar, you were doing it wrong with the dynamite. You drill a hole exactly in between the combination dial and bolt turning wheel. You only need a quarter stick placed "INSIDE" of the safe. It will rip the door open both inside and outside, creating a double hole inside the door wall and outside. With that you have access to the internals. The locking bolts are controlled by a several rods that work counter to each other, you can access those rods by pulling and pushing depending on the configuration of the safe design. This will unlock the door and you can open it. Or you can just reach inside of the safe and grab whatever you can through the fist sized hole. This method will keep the door from Caving in which will make the lugs nearly impossible to get off, which you video demonstrates. And you do not have to carry so much explosive material on you. If you are blowing a safe opn a job, you don't want too much noise, although the half stick will make noise, most of it is absorbed by the safe and any room it is in. Plus, you do not want to destroy anything on the inside if you do not have too. Thats what you would do if your job had a "TIME" componant where you had to get in quickly. for your safe, you would have to use a high carbide drill bit on a slow setting for the drill. Having a magnetic jig would help alot. A Quicker way would be to use a thermal lance just for the hole so you don't cause a fire on the inside. If done right, you should be able to get into the safe in about three to five minutes depending on how good you are. Just make sure you put water on the hole before you put the dynamite in to prevent damage to the stick. For more "Tougher Safes" i.e. safes that have multiple layers of steel with layers of copper on the inside to destribute the heat evenly and the glass vacuum locking systems that automoatically lock the lugs when the drill pierces the glass, I would recommend Two Shaped charges of RDX, C-4, or Semtex in a very smalll amount, about eight ounces for each with a Copper Cone head placed in a location where the center Joint of the connectors for the locking bars so that you may damage the before the glass can "PERMANANTLY" Lock the lock lugs of the safe. If the safe is wired, you can buy the sensor that matches the inside of the safe, create a bypass with this sensor on the outside or if wireless the using a cell phone base station jammer will do the trick. Once the lug system is disabled, then you can use the first two holes as a starter point to burn or drill and use dynamite, usually a stick in each hole to blow the front of the safe open. Although an explosive the higher briscance would be better suited to shatter the harder steel. Just my two cents, but what do I know in the end?

Not doubting your information but the types of "safes" are a joke and can be pentrated in minutes with common power tools.

I can't believe you didn't dig out the copper 'carrots' that the shaped charges left in the ground. These would be the remains of the jets of plasticized copper that shot through the safe like it wasn't even there.

You should do one with filling the safe up with water and blowing up a charge inside it. Caulk the door and drill a hole on the top. Water doesn’t like to be compressed.

You need to put that size charge inside a locked safe at some point.

Calling Giraldo Rivera...The old time safecrackers (1870-1900) used to use a blowpipe - a length of pipe that matched up with the exact measurements of the interior of the safe and drill a hole first...They actually would measure or even buy safes beforehand...Then they would dump their equipment on Long Island farms in and around Smithtown - farmers would find the toolbags years later in the 1970's and 198o's and wonder what those tools were for. Be careful--- that old "gypsum" might contain asbestos.

If you get another safe I would love to see a hydraulic explosive where it was drilled in the top then filled with water then a blasting cap detonated inside. I can't remember the movie that is from but it has Deniro and Edward Norton in it. Another one would be to see how well oxy acetelyne works because I hear that's how theives actually blow up atm's at least in my country, filling it with a stoichiometric mix then sparking it somehow - I guess they eyeball it rather than trying to make the best possible mix lol.
