Open water as kicking isn’t so important there!

Sighting is so important, I just did a open water Tri last weekend and me and my group lost the last bouy as it was quite far away from us so we all had to stop to find it

I prefer open water swimming because I can get into a rhythm with my breathing which I struggle with in the pool and also the room and freedom to go at your own pace.

Pool for sure… but never as good of a workout as an open water swim.

I love open water with a wetsuit on. The major problem for me is when the sun is rising over the first buoy. This happened just a week ago at the Sunrise Triathlon in Boulder, Colorado. It was really difficult to keep it in focus. Other than that I love the freedom of the open swim. I love the pool because I can wear my headphones and listen to music and nobody cares. I’ve done more open water this year than ever before in our little “Lake”. I just hope the algae stays under control and I don’t catch that brain eating amoeba! 🦠

Also: closing your eyes when your head is looking down. Only open your eyes during the breathing phase. This helps to get used to dark / deep waters where you can't see the bottom of it.

Our Triathlon club did the very tips you suggested. Very helpful and I wish it could be done more often. Keep up the good work. Cheers

Another great video, thanks! But what caught my eye more than anything was the big gash on your leg at 7:00, what happened?? Cycling injury? Is this what kept you out of the Tour de France this year??

Dude! What happened to your left thigh? Looks pretty nasty. Was it a burn or a tumble off the bike? Hope it heals quickly! 👨‍⚕️

Bizarrely it was a swimrun wound 😂 The pull buoy wore a nice hole into my leg throughout the course of the event

Yes, the dead turns do kill the momentum for sure. I killed (tried) several turns this morning. They are sure challenging.

Open water is preferred but am 60 km from same. As such, the pool is for training.

Does anyone know of a pool 25m-50m that would allow overnight endurance event? preferably in the South East of England. I'm looking to do a version of the Goggins 4x4x48, but do a triathlon every 5 hours for 50 hours and I need an accessible, safe swim that I can cycle from, stay nearby and run from without too much elevation etc. Doing it for charity and don't want to spend a fortune. thanks

Really good tips Mark 👍as it's often the case foe amateurs it's swimming that gives the most concern, so anything to build confidence like the tips to improve here, will aid confidence 👍. I personally love the saying swim like a fish, sight like a crocodile ! This heads up practice will really help swimmers as you do this one the most often in a race.

Only swam in a pool so far, still working on my form, so no open water for me for the time being... Open water isn't always available where I live anyway, so maybe next year's summer season when the lake isn't swamped with blue agae again 😨🤢

Thanks for this. But why not just take up water polo as a sport. That will do it. Not surprised that polo players are top competitors in open water swimming.

@@helmutdergroe9457 I did my 70.3 at Weymouth last year doing 90% breast stroke. I am average at best but certainly didn't come 'last'. Great benefits of lower stress, simple navigation and avoiding mouthfuls of sea water. It can be done 😀
