The open house is a welcome initiative by the students. However when such unfortunate incidents happen all members of the community should make themselves responsible and question where they have failed. The administration must make sure that the processes they have work efficiently, the teachers must make sure that they empathize with the students. But the students must also look out for each other and make an effort so that each and every student feels connected. Whenever there is any reachout to the halls from the counselling centre very few students like to attend. Every wing in the students hall must take the responsibility for looking out for each student in the wing.

Poonam and the director's ending remarks were the most meaningful. I think friends and the people around you play a major role in psychiatric issues like depression. In this context, when someone reaches a a stage of major depression, professional help is a must. However, the culture in IIT Kgp and the friends, I believe, are majorly to blame to reach that stage. The "wasting life away" like mindset is exactly what can trigger major depression. IITians must understand that IIT is only an educational institute, where they have to spend 4 or 5 years of their life. So don't let the frustrated professors, poor facilities, moronic friends, etc. change your mindset while you are there. It's difficult but feasible. If you feel like losing your original self, don't wait and act on it to restore.

I agree Arkanath. Taking personal responsibility is something KGPians need to learn.

Some of the students are so used to a protective atmosphere that even after when they turn 20-21, they expect the authority and administration to become their parents. Grow up people. You expect someone to take care of you in spite of having so many friends around. Questioning the availability of facilities is right but not the availability of a different set of parents.
