  • @SkipPlaysStrings

    @SkipPlaysStrings

    2 жыл бұрын

    Actually, 7 dollars in 1930 is about ~115 dollars today. Per the 1927 Sears catalog, that would get you an all-birch instrument, though a nicer one, with a dollar or two left over for songbooks, extra strings, what have you. A spruce-topped instrument was about ten dollars, for the price you could also get a "mahogany" guitar, which might mean all-hog or back and sides with a spruce top - it's hard to be sure; or a "Bradley Kinkaid" spruce & hog model. - A nicer spruce-topped hog back and sides model was around $15, with a mother-of-toilet seat fret-board model of unknown construction (probably all birch or perhaps all mahogany) coming in at only 13. A National Triolian was a princely sum of $46, or 50 with a payment plan. The 1936 catalog lists several models; none of which the same as those nine years prior. The cheapest, a $4.25 flat-top with F-holes, probably birch; and a choice of a "Lone Ranger" or 'Palm Beach" model (the same guitar, it seems, with different stenciling on the finish) for fifty cents more; a Mahogany model for $10; and the "Four Star Jubilee Special" - a round-hole arch top at only $4.85, usually ten dollars, and "worth $12 anywhere"! Interestingly, the Lone Ranger model is also in the 1940 catalog for a dollar (more or less) more, now with "Gene Autry" in rope script on the upper right section of the lower bout. Interestingly, a spruce-topped parlor or single 0 size with whitewood (poplar, birch, basswood, etc.) back and sides is around $170 today or thereabouts (Recording King Dirty 37 Single 0); roughly in line with the Sears prices, though I can't quite find the right model to compare it to.
