Open Canoe Bilge Pump install (& other mods)

Спорт

If you paddle whitewater, especially tight, technical sections that don't allow much room for emptying water that you take on board, a bilge pump is a valuable addition. This video outlines the installation process and materials needed.
A number of saddle modifications are useful, to allow the saddle to be removed quickly, but still have it securely in the boat when paddling. These include the addition of knee wedges that also anchor the front of the saddle laterally, and a three-sided piece of foam glued at the rear of the saddle to secure it. Screws through the thwarts, into dowel inserted in the bulkhead and saddle, prevent longitudinal movement.
Finally, if you paddle an Esquif L'Edge, or similar boat with the carry handle oriented longitudinally, rotate it 90 degrees and fix to the deck. Use the spare screw holes to secure the ends of the airbags.

I hooked a Battery Tender brand lead on my battery, so when I get home I just pop it out of the boat and plug it in for a recharge in the house. Added another lead set on the Jeep battery, in case I run out of juice while out for a few days. I just mate the boat battery to the Jeep battery (sits in a perfect opening next to each other) and recharge while driving in about an hour or two.

Also, I went with the 1200 Attwood. Same size as the 500, pumps more than twice as fast and was only $5 more at Wal-Mart.

Geoff Page Since making the video, I replaced the 500 gpm pump with two 1200 gpm pumps. Definitely worth it.

Geoff Page Good idea about having a car charger. Do you have any photos of the setup? How do you avoid over-charging the bilge pump battery?

They're both 12v systems. I asked a couple of mechanic friends if it was okay to link them together and they said it shouldn't be a problem.

Nice job! Can you give me more details on the switch (ie-brand, mdl #). Thanks!

It's just a cheap 12-V, 16A switch. It happened to slot inside the pipe off-cut nicely by accident--I didn't design it this way from the start. Google "20 Mini Round Green LED Rocker Indicator Switch 3 Pin On-Off 12V DC" and you will find what I used.
