Open Bionics × Deus Ex - SDCC 2016 Panel

Ғылым және технология

Samantha Payne (COO, Open Bionics) and Laura Gallagher (Lead Character Artist, Deus Ex), joined by 10-year-old Tilly (volunteer), discuss their collaboration to create affordable, functional and fashionable 3D-printed prosthetic arms, inspired by the Deus Ex Universe. Tilly also shares her experience with prosthetic arms, working with Open Bionics and where she thinks the future of prosthetics is going.

    This is absolutely amazing! Great work by both the Deus Ex team and Open Bionics! Ernst Fischer once said that, "Art, unless it wants to break faith with its social function, must show the world as changeable and help to change it." That is EXACTLY what you guys at Eidos Montreal have done and have inspired millions over the years to see bionics not as something to be hidden under layers of fake skin colored plastic but to be unique and challenge our notions of what prosthetics should be. I always wondered why Adam's prosthetics stood out so much, and now I know why. Because they don't need to conform. They can be a statement of individuality in and unto themselves. Your game which is art has shown the world as changeable and has helped to change it and by working alongside and potentially inspiring great companies like Open Bionics, you WILL have an impact on the world as a whole in the near future, in the field of bionics and prosthetics.....and who knows, maybe one day, even actual augmentations. You have definitely inspired a lot of people to investigate these things and by sharing with us real life work done by Open Bionics you have shown us what is in store for the future and how those among us who are interested in sharing our talents could possibly become a part of that change and progress. You can't stop progress and you have proven it. This is so meta it boggles the mind. Real life influenced you, and now you are influencing real life. Truly an achievement not to be taken lightly and an brilliant one at that! Keep up the great work, the kind of stuff that hardly any game company does, and keep making great games that challenge people to ask hard questions on ethics and morality and think and potentially even act on the future of humanity. At the very least I know for a fact that you and Open Bionics have now positively influenced me personally since I will now start using my skill as a professional Industrial Designer and 3D modeller to make open source designs for their prosthetics and do my bit and maybe even get deeper into it down the line! I'm a sci-fi geek and DE: Human Revolution was one of the biggest, pardon the pun, game changers in the way I saw science fiction and made me adore the Cyberpunk genre even more. I now see some science fiction as achievable reality and seeing this kind of progress and change happening around me really blows my mind. The simple fact that we are talking about these things at this level of seriousness and reality is just amazing. With the way technology is progressing I don't find it hard to believe that you might have given us a glimpse into the future with your ultra detailed and realistic world in HR and that's why I can't wait to see the world you've built for us in MD. Best of luck to all of you at Eidos Montral and Open Bionics and may the future be with you! Thanks for everything that you have done and all the amazing work people like you guys continue to do!

    Dude they 3d printed some plastic parts so her prosthetic looks a little nicer, it's not a huge technical achievement, it's a PR exercise. They didn't find the cure to cancer, you are overdoing it with the white knighting here.

  • @SciAntGaming

    @SciAntGaming

    You're oversimplifying it. They didn't just do that, they are being part of a sea change which is changing the way people look at prosthetics, which is a huge deal for those in the amputee/disabled community. At least they are doing something and being part of something big and positive which will impact a lot of people. Their games have also inspired a lot people, including me to investigate the prosthetics world and people like Hugh Herr and Aimee Mullins who are changing the face of the prosthetics and bionics community and they are also helping a great company like Open Bionics get publicity with a large part of the gaming community, a company whose work could potentially revolutionize the prosthetics industry impacting millions of people without the finances to buy ultra expensive prosthetics. So before jumping on someone and accusing them of "white knighting" please consider all the angles.

She is lead character artist for triple A game, that is something you must earn and you have to be good in your line of work - that's all that matters to me. I was bit disappointed that she forgot name of the main character but you can clearly see that she was nervous so I think it can happen when you speak in front so many people.

    i really like laura and her work, all this hate comments here because of her voice are frustrating, i dont understant what your problem is? Especially if you think about setting of deus ex. also the whole discussion about transhumanism, about changing stuff we cant change yet. only because some people dont want/need a change in their life (yet, most disabilities are acquired) they do like its the worst thing ever. (you can live with one arm, but what if you can change it? thats just a simple example, its the same thing as living with 20% eye vision or wanting bodyparts you dont have. its a big thing to get disabled people out of being special (and say what you want, thats not the good kind of special, its excluding). what if a wheelchair would be so good, that everyone, also abled people would want one so they can sit and drive fast long distances? thats exactly what artificial limbs are, but with other negative sides. and thats clear, everything has positive and negative sides. of course with the technology of the now, no one will "cut his arms off" to get artificial ones. but if the human races lives long enough, i think its a big possibility to have augmentations in otherwise abled people. just think bigger and in a bigger time frame.

    If anyone would like to speak with me- My name is Rich, and I'm trying to develop artificial muscles for prosthetics using magnetics and Ferromagnetic fluid. I came up with a simple design in 1992 I don't think anyone's invented it yet, and it would be much more realistic, and you'd have muscles in the right places and with a new skin they're coming out with, you can actually touch and feel but I need help, and you may be able to integrate this idea into your. Business. The appendages would have artificial veins, it's part. Partially hydraulic personally electromagnetic. Removable from the body, With sleeves that pull or roll up for extrastability and Continuity. My nephew recently ha terrible infection and is losing his feet and his hands and and prosthetics has been something. I've had in the back my head for decades. And now he really needs help. I feel with some design planning, my idea could look/ funtion practically as naturally as original limbs. Thank you!

    I don't get how guys like Greg Miller get jobs like this he's terrible, he makes everything awkward. I used to do my high school's news cast and I could blow him out the water. No offense to him but almost any normal person who isn't socially awkward could do better, he made Laura feel uncomfortable you can see it.

    Who the fuck cares if she sounds masculine or feminine? In the future we'll all be augmented, able to change our voices and body parts at will.
