Open Bar #63 - Ahsoka Ratings Flop, James Gunn In Hot Water, Captain Marvel 3 In Doubt

Ойын-сауық

Well, it seems Ahsoka isn't going to be reviving Star Wars, with depressingly low ratings for its first two episodes. Who could have predicted this? Also, James Gunn manages to get himself in trouble yet again when old tweets resurfaced. Join me, MauLer, Shadiversity, Reaper and History Bro as we talk about it all.

If Vader killed Ashoka right after moment she broke his mask and we got a glimpse of Anakin, it would have cemented Anakin’s turn to the dark side and illustrate how cruel and lost he’d become. It also would have given Ashoka a memorable and devastating ending. Plus, it also would fixed a lot of the cannon issues. Now, we get to watch them destroy the newer characters. 😢

Oh absolutely yes. I hate Rebels, but that part. That cemented Failonis unwillingness to let Characters die. Especially Jedis. Now we have an untold billion Jedis just waiting to appear out of nowhere. Luke who? The last Jedi what? Why even bother with that guy or his Sister Leia, when Yoda and Kenobi still had an Army of Jedi running around the galaxy.

Its utterly baffiling how they flushed away such a perfect moment and resolution by having Ahsoka die to Vader after realizing he's Anakin and refusing to leave him again. A scenario like that practially writes itself and they still found a way to ruin it.

Thrawn in the EU novels was first introduced on a Star Destroyer that had a novice crew suddenly facing a large force of X-wings and assault frigates, everyone is panicking and the few experienced officers acknowledge the enemy force is strong enough to destroy the Chimera in its current state; but Thrawn is utterly calm and is looking at art. With a few commands he has tested the enemy's leadership and proceeds to utterly destroy the opposing force. Perfect introduction to a villain for a book.

Heir to the Empire was the book that got George Lucas interested in filming the prequel trilogy. The Thrawn trilogy made him feel like there was still a big enough fan base to make another Star Wars trilogy. It is a good series of books that actually did some justice to the main characters of Star Wars rather than deconstructing them.

Thrawn is a pale shadow here of what he was in the EU. He had ideals, he was noble, he was a strategic genius in practice - we were not told we were shown how outstandingly brilliant he was, even his death was very well done and had a lot of meaning behind it, a commentary on why the ends don't justify the means. Rebels turned him into a two-bit, snarling villain and now this has further robbed us of thecharacter that we hoped we will see.

There's been no other moment in film like the image of Darth Vader stepping into view through the smoke in the first "Star Wars". That kind of film magic has been completely lost. 2:27:50 If you look at Sam, at the end of all three movies, he is the most standout character. End of Fellowship? "I know you're going alone, and I'm coming with you!..." End of Towers? "It's like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger they were. And sometimes you didn't want to know the end… because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it’s only a passing thing… this shadow. Even darkness must pass.” RotK? Shad already said it. The world building in the very first Star Wars movie is absolutely incredible. It’s not spoon fed. It’s not a tease. Characters speak about some place or experience or other characters that exist out there and it feels natural. You feel their concern. You’re watching this story from intro to ending and not only are you satisfied with that story but you’re also left with bits to think about later and want to know more but not because you weren’t satisfied from the beginning. It’s like subtle previews of your next restaurant experience and even though you may be full now, you’re exhilarated for the next meal. I miss that Star Wars.

I think what history bro is talking about as far as the universe not feeling cool, like, with the og films especially, like, a shit ton was left to your imagination. Now there's a thousand TV shows that literally elaborate on everything, and the shit Disney is adding actually detracts from the original universe they set up lmao. Like them trying to add more depth to the universe is hurting what they actually had lmao. Like one thing people keep pointing out is in the og films it felt pretty clear that Luke yoda and ben were literally the last Jedi, the last of a dying breed. Now with every new game show or movie they release we find out there were ten more Jedi that miraculously survived order 66 and the whole empire seems so much less daunting and competent because of it. In the og films it felt like you were watching a desperate last stand for freedom and hope in the universe. Now with shit like mando and the ahsoka show, it literally just feels like a visual theme park is what theyre aiming for. There's never any real danger or any real tension.

Thrawn was so excessively competent that the main point of discontent about the books is not that he planned poorly but that he dies in an utterly unsatisfying way via deus ex bloodline. Ahsoka suffers from the same issues as The Mandalorian, Obi Wan, and The Book of Boba Fett; there's just never much actually going on. Which can be palatable if you have engaging characters....which none of them do. It's incredibly jarring to go from modern Star Wars to, say, something like the early seasons of The Expanse in terms of how efficiently screentime is used. I'm all for a slower paced narrative, but there's just _nothing_ happening in these shows.

The sad part about subverting expectations especially with cape movies is we sort of did it to ourselves. 89, The Shoemacher films, and the OG TV show all were goofy but no one can ever say those movies weren't made in earnest. Even the more serious films like the Nolan Trilogy had some insanely goofy things especially in DKR. And over the years we've all deconstructed and joked about it. Robot Chicken is just anthology of all of the goofy capeshit we've had over the years meme'd to death. And true enough we all enjoy cracking jokes at the expensive of film properties. The problem is now people like James Gunn now believe they should cut out the middle man and turn it into social commentary instead of making a series in character in world built story

On that point SW is weird, for example every Jedi during the Clone Wars (and in the Old Republic game) was automatically high ranked. There were actual admirals calling the shots in fleet action, but generals did have authority on the matter too. If it were to be made akin to IRL organisation, then the Army would have control over their own transports, detachments of ground support fighters, and have to ask the Navy for escort every time. It made sort of sense for Jedis to have certain privileges regarding hierarchy in both Republics, but Hera is a normal meatbag.

The Air Force uses a traditional army hierarchy, mainly because it used to be called the US Army Air Corp, which is why it doesn’t use traditional naval ranks. It wouldn’t be a stretch to assume a high-ranking general would have command over a star fleet, or straight-up outrank any of the available naval officers. At least in Star Wars; I don’t think a General would be able to command an Admiral, even if he outranks the admiral, on earth.

@@urethralsensitivity Air force wouldn't have command over Capital ships, that would still be navy since the ships themselves operate similarly to capital ships today. Even military personnel, when asked on the subject, agree that space and capital ships would definitely be the navies jurisdiction since they have the experience that the air force lacks. In Sci fi terms, air force would probably be limited to planets only or be folded into the navy/army. In a planetary defense aspect, they would still have purpose cause you'd need ground forces to occupy planets after the navy leaves to maintain defences on colonies and what not. I know Star gate has the air force colonels commanding capital ships, which is one of my few minor gripes with SG-1 and Atlantis. I'm not sure why they didn't just change the ranks, wouldn't need to change the story or anything(maybe a couple of interactions here and there perhaps at most). Halo(in terms of the early books) and Star trek demonstrate how space capital ships would be realistically operated.
