Open All Hours - s01e02 - A Mattress On Wheels
Ойын-сауық
Open All Hours
Season One, Episode Two - 27 Feb. 1976
Fed up with having to do deliveries for the shop in all weathers on his bike Granville suggests that Arkwright invest in a van. Needless to say his uncle baulks at the expense until Granville points out that it could be a mattress on wheels, a means of impressing Nurse Gladys. So Arkwright buys a second hand one and Granville wishes he hadn't when he takes it out on the road.

Takes me right back to my birthplace and early years in Yorkshire. Miss those days, people and places! My Dad loved this show. So did I.
The more I watch this show...the more I am liking it
Brilliant comedic actor Ronnie.
That's disgusting!! It needs to be aired first! Priceless!
Ronnie Barker was a genius
7:40 absolutely brilliant 👏🏻 😂 then the following scene with Arkwright reading the paper and chatting with Granville - packed full of superb laughs - excellently written and more hoots per minute than an entire sitcom episode now!
Reminds me watching this as a child and if I sat there very quietly mum and dad didn't notice it was neally 9 o'clock.I could stay up longer.
Sadly missed truly a different world 😢
I remember seeing this on PBS in NYC when I was a kid (along with Fawlty Towers & Dr Who. Thank goodness for public telly!). I was convinced that Ronnie Barker actually had a stutter until I saw him years later in The Two Ronnies. I was amazed that he could fake it so well

You Can Tell When Arkright goes to the nurses house that its a back drop in the back ground When she answers the door! It Looks Like a painting!? 🤔🤔

The old bloke Freddie was in coronation st
That customer character wearing the suit and tie and checked shirt for sure thought that would make him look more suitable of a suitor to whom Awkright had described to another customer during that episode as being a cheeky little Minks. Which Mattress On Wheels called a van could have maybe rescued the character being referred to as "This angry little figure appears clad all in off white; wrapping its cycle clips, moaning in an awful voice - why don't we get a van? What a fantastic episode that would have been after Nurse Gladys's white car finally got replaced for dates by a vehicle which could have doubled as an ambulance to rescue that figure when its moaning was clear evidence it had been injured. PErhaps the customer character who was not offended when Awkright described her as a cheeky minks may have been too careful when it comes to coveting someone's servant would not have minded seeing that kind of double.
Stupid question. It’s about Arkwright. Let’s say if he spent more time away from the shop, more time to look at other places, would he be as attracted to Nurse Gladys? I wonder if his attraction to her is slightly clouded by proximity. Just a thought. In all honesty, the show was more philosophical than it let on. About love, life, knowledge, the basic human connection. Even if it isn’t the funniest show in the history of all man (still quite funny), the random musings of life from the show are enough to come back to. Interesting.
