Op Amps: Audio Compressor

Ғылым және технология

In this video we take a look at a basic audio compressor. This design utilizes an operational transconductance amplifier, or OTA. The OTA is configured as a voltage controlled amplifier. Before watching this video, it is strongly recommended that you watch the video covering OTAs (right before this one in the Op Amps playlist), and read about them in my op amps text.

Mr. Fiore, many thanks for the content. Totally love the pragmatic approach of the lectures.

I need one of these on my TV, I hate the way ads are louder and movies go from almost zero levels when speaking to insane deafening levels when something happens as simple as opening the door into traffic noise let alone an explosion etc

so it is basically similar to AGC in AM radio?

It is similar but an AGC system would not adjust gain in accordance with the music or voice signal. Instead, the gain is adjusted in accordance with overall signal strength (i.e., the strength of the carrier signal in an AM broadcast). Thus, a weak station is boosted relative to a strong station resulting in more consistent volume levels as you tune to different stations. In the video example, the control voltage would not be derived from the audio input, but would be derived from the carrier (or more simply, the received signal, as most of the energy in a standard AM broadcast exists in the carrier and not in the side bands).

Interesting ! This must be what 'The Compression Wars' was all about in the 80's and 90's producers trying to just make stuff louder by taking away bandwidth or have I lost the plot and fallen of my twig ?.....cheers.

They're not really taking away bandwidth (at least not if they're doing it right) but what they are doing is making the dynamic range smaller. The softer parts get louder and the short but high level peaks get trimmed back, meaning that the overall level can be increased. This makes the tune stand out and it grabs your attention. They do the same thing with commercials. Those tend to be extremely compressed.
