Oops. Well I screwed up. (Comment response from Ghoul videos)

Welcome back to my dive into the 'Fallout' series where we peel back layers not just of the game and show, but the political/social undercurrents they suggest.
Today, I'm not talking about game or TV lore; let's talk about us. This fandom, this relationship. Let's break apart these comments!
00:04:20 - Chewing over how your comments shape our little corner of the internet.
00:05:12 - Digging deeper into specific feedback you've thrown my way.
00:09:35 - Peeling back the layers on Fallout’s political undertones and what they mirror in our world today.
00:12:42 - Chatting about how our community vibes together and why these conversations matter.
00:16:58 - Wrapping up with some thoughts on where we’re headed next - spoiler: expect Norm and ass jerky!
00:19:34 - Signing off with a nudge to keep the comments and insights coming while I try to have other aspects of my life 🤣
_______________________________________
The way my content hits you might vary. It may feel too harsh - even arrogant. Or, you might find me refreshingly no-nonsense. That’s natural. We all come from different backgrounds.
Here’s the thing: This channel, including the comments section, is Lindsay territory. You’re a guest. And believe it or not, you have more power than I do - you are “the masses.” There’s one of me and thousands of you. So I’m not trying to personally insult any of you if I want to take steps to protect myself. I’m just being sensible.
So heads up - leaving a comment here is like leaving something on my front lawn, and finders keepers. I reserve the right to block you, delete the comment, or screen grab the comment and do what I want with it.
Will I roast you? Probably not. That’s not my thing. Everything I have to say is about helping us understand each other better.
The question is - do you trust me on that? Do you have the guts to take a chance on hearing me out?
I can’t imagine making a video that everyone agrees with. Sounds like a snooze fest. So let’s say I’m declaring an intent to reach an audience that gives me the benefit of the doubt. If I say something iffy, I hope you’ll lean towards a generous interpretation rather than a cynical one. If you don’t have the stomach for that, then I don’t have the stomach for you.
I dare you to trust me. What do you say?

All of my friends that are old school fans love the Ghoul. My conservative relatives and my liberal friends who saw the show love the Ghoul. I know people who want to bang the Ghoul. Come to think of it my friends who are new fans love the Ghoul. He would fit right in all the games, especially 2 & New Vegas. Wait someone didn't love the Ghoul?

The thing about needing definitions at the beginning of videos. I'm reminded of a bit from Carmilla The Webseries where a couple characters discuss how different people mean different things when they say love. Not even just as in "I love my child" vs "I love cake", but as in two people who are "In love with each other" can have very different ideas of what that means. It's actually why when I actually do bother to try to have conversations or 'debates' with people, I try to get folks to try to give some definitions of what they mean by important phrases. It's so easy to just assume everyone is working off the same definition and that's actually surprisingly rare. You mention the privilege gap between Ghoul and Lucy, and I can definitely tell you, you'll want to include some definitions in that one. I've encountered quite a few folks who equate someone saying they have privilege is pretty much "You never had any problems at all and everything was perfect". Which, ironically is a pretty accurate version of how Lucy thought her life was, but ya know what I mean. (Hopefully) Also: Still annoyed I missed out on Willow. I made the mistake of thinking "I'll catch up on it later" then boom, it's gone.

We, the general public, have been trained to emotionally react. It is pretty useful as once someone has gone into a state of emotionally reacting they are highly unlikely to engage in activities like, listening, thinking, or in general being open. The tragic thing here is that most of the general public do not understand that this is happening to them, nor that it has been done intentionally, nor^2 that they probably did it to themselves with great vigor and enthusiasm. Anyway, on that whole troll thing, use caution as you seem to have a set of standard that you expect people to comport to... I liked your analysis about the finger scene. I know you mentioned that fallout generally is pretty unsubtle with their themes and such but I definitely feel like there is more to that scene. I agree that it’s not sexist or misogynistic for Lucy to get here finger cut off by the ghoul. I think the honest exchange is actually foreshadowing larger character development between Lucy and Coop. It’s almost like they have a blood bond in a way now. Someone pointed out that Lucy actually bites off his trigger finger and he uses her finger to replace it. So symbolically a very cynical character now has a literal piece of the most idealistic character. So in a way Coop is incorporating a bit of Lucy in himself. In his former life Coop was a bit of an idealist who was impotent when it came to preventing the Great War. Now Coop is one of the most powerful people in the wasteland but is so cynical that he won’t do anything to help anyone other than himself For Lucy losing the finger represents a kind of loss of innocence that she needs in order to survive in the wasteland. Similarly Lucy is an idealistic person who needs to come to terms with the world she is in to survive. Losing her finger is a non-fatal lesson that this world is cruel and unfair. I think that in the future Coop is going to become more like Lucy and Lucy is going to become like Coop. Screw these asshats.

About your troll question I can say this from what I gathered. Some actually want to make you laugh: by telling some silly pun. Then some genuinely tear down others. Maybe because they hate their life; or just have problems. I subscribed because your channel is interesting; and people are crazy hating on the show, when it's a masterpiece. In fact Tod Howard said that the writers are Experts on the Lore. I'm independent politically: I believe anyone has the right to choose what life to live. Yes there is consequences to actions; but we learn, and grow. People have become selfish; and you are right people treat content creators like their shopping. I myself have been guilty of this, you have made me think hard and reflect on myself. Well worth the follow.

I never played the games, but that may have helped me in liking the show, because I had almost no idea of what I was getting into beyond 50's style radlands adventure. Like your commentary, enjoy the tone and love all the nuggets of lore new to a no-previous-experience fan of the Fallout fictional universe. My only request for the future is Are Cats really extinct in Fallout? Why? I'm with Cooper on the whole "Who decided No Dogs In The Vault?" issue, and I am aware there is a Live Vault Cat related mission in the games somewhere.

But after reflecting on how unfazed I've been when the tables were turned, I have a respect for the energy. And furthermore in the context of you being a geuine and thoughtful person, and disclaiming your intent I have a novel respect for you. I watched the video about the ghoul serum and then this video popped into my for me. I did very much like the video on the serum, and I liked the ideas and point of views brought up. My initial reaction to seeing this video going up was oh god is this where everyone starts throwing S at each other and the bad times are had, I clicked the video to watch and got distracted and pulled away from it a few times. After getting the chance to sit down and actually watch and listen to this video and what is being said, I want to say whole heartedly thank you. Wonderful video, I like the diving in and dissecting, analysis and explanations. Weird thing...as you were talking about tone, and the person who included the lol emoji and how it gave you better context / tone interpretation....it really hit me just how much we infer tone (or project) and how it totally screws up communications. Have had this happen in relationships, etc. I guess that's nothing new....BUT...the connection that triggered for me during your speech was how much that's like the Elcor in Mass Effect universe.....they are unable to put any real tonal inflection in their speech so they always have to say their emotion first, before what they're saying to give the context to it....ie...verbal emojis. (Also, I've just done another playthrough of ME so it's strongly on my mind)

What's worked for me in trying to help people is to approach from their point of view on how things in their world work and play along into thought experiments and reasoning on why they may be wrong(usually works but some just ignore lmao) im not trying to assume u dont know thats just what has worked for me Sorry for the long comment there were many thoughts and I wanted to do a lot 😅. I just watched both of your other videos the other day! And honestly, hearing you talk about your issues with your mother reminded me a lot of my best friend. I’m a cis guy, and i’ve been fortunate in my life to have two loving parents who, despite their own faults, tried their best with me and were never abusive. My best friend is nonbinary and they were emotionally and physically abused by their mother growing up, and unfortunately i didn’t know them growing up and we didn’t really meet until highschool (funnily enough the first time we actually met was in a black ops lobby where we friended each other and neither of us realized this until we exchanged xbox names, blew our minds lol) and knowing them has made such a difference in my life, they’ve genuinely changed me as a person, for the better i think as i was a pretty hateful person back in high school, (honestly i probably would have been one of the assholes you talked about in this video!) and i can’t thank them enough for that. I’ve done my absolute best to be the best friend i can for them in return. I dunno lol i don’t comment a lot on videos but yours have really spoken to me, especially as i’m kinda the opposite of how you described yourself, you being the most right leaning leftist in a room, i’m probably the most left leaning rightist in a room, and generally just prefer to listen and make my own opinions on things. Hey Lindsay, I'd really like to hear your thoughts/speculation on pre-2077 America in the Fallout Universe as given the lack of counter cultures seem in game I'm lead to think at least socially the USA during the restructuring period in its 1960's was significantly more progressive than ours. Plus the lack of any mega churches type buildings make me think that a "backlash" from mainstream culture in the 80's ie a parallel "Regan Revolution" if you will never happens. Totally understand if you wouldn't want to tackle it though as it could be a bit spicy and not something you'd want to focus on as it's more based off the absence of evidence rather than the existence of positive proof. As a programmer, and seasoned game designer; I can tell you first hand, that unless you have "the right set up" within that game environment, "Machinama" (sp) is a royal pain in the ass to do because of the depth and control needed to make it happen well. A prime example is Rooster teeth's, "Red vs Blue". Which until they got special permission from Bunji and were given the source engine and a new computer to build their stories, they did EVERYTHING in the multiplayer vs match environments and recorded it that way, because the environment was completely controlled. So I feel you on that one; To do Machinama, takes the right set up and Fallout 4, while nice is a royal pain in the ass to set up well. But when done, looks stunning, such as "Fallout Raiders" : kzread.info/dash/bejne/rIOmudGzgdTVfrg.html SO I say, if you can figure out how to do it! Party on wayne! Make it happen. ;p

I remember the s word comment. I think they meant savage. I can't remember if you said it, or even someone else used the word, but I remember also being confused and looking around for what word they meant. And the only one that I could think of was savage. [One search later] I looked back at that video, and yes, I think that was the word. The base comment was by TheLoneClaw: "Another vibe I got from the scene where The Ghoul cut Lucy's finger off was that he was very intentionally juxtapositioning the way she bit his finger off like a savage (what she thinks he is at that point) vs him pulling out his knife and meticulously cutting off her finger to further rub in that the two of them are not so different." Unless they mean scene, she, or so, it has to be savage. Problem is, it's just a word. Like you can look it up in a dictionary and find it's meaning. If someone uses it as a slur, then of course it's bad, but it wasn't used as such but as it's actually meant to be used (definition). So saying it's a slur in that context is, I guess, just to make the original commenter feel bad?

To be honest, I wouldn’t worry about the “writing for the audience” thing. I mean I get it - it’s nice to properly explain the context of what you’re saying, before going into the actual subject. But I think you put it best when you said that you are, after all, a private citizen who is just talking on the internet. There’s no obligation to service anyone. So don’t let it suck the fun out of your writing process. Talk what you wanna talk about - I enjoyed it the last two times. And while there were probably a lot of out of touch comments, I assume a lot of people who may not have commented, enjoyed it too (at least looking at the views and likes it got)!

Come for the ass jerky, stay for the commentary. 😆 Grab a snack, grab a drink, kick back, relax, time for a ramble (probably, it's what I do). As someone who was in her teens when Fallout 1 and 2 came out, I'm a fan of Cooper so far, before and after. I didn't get to play the first two games yet, with the third being gifted to me for Christmas before 4 was even in development. And I played the hell out of 3. I think he's a sort of tragic anti-hero in present time, and prior to the nukes falling, sort of the personified ideal of the 50s era Western genre and American hero. The good man, that even after war he served in, didn't want to fake shoot his baddie co-star in a movie, and thought to shield his daughter and flee with her at the end of the world as he knew it. To go from that, to matter of fact talk about "sometimes a fella's gotta eat a fella" and "ass jerky don't make itself," or trading a fresh out of the vault girl for drugs to keep him from going feral, and be this ass kicking gunslinger still looking for his family is a hell of a 200+ year journey. I think by the end, or I hope, Cooper and Lucy will balance each other out, Lucy being more of a badass survivor, and Cooper being more of the man he was before while still kicking ass. Politics. Everything is politics, there's not really any escaping it, and those who think they can, it must be a nice bubble to be living in. As part of the queer (and disabled) community, kind of no escaping it either. I just wanna be a hermity goblin of a writer, find some kind and strong woman to settle down with, have a dog, cat, maybe a small garden/farm, some cozy little cabin away from everyone, and live in peace. But some people are losing their minds, all over again. It's like the Satanic Panic from back in the day, or people freaking out over gay folks back then (and even further back, desegregation, and so on and so on with anyone othered). And if anyone missed Fallout as a game series taking swings at all sorts of political things, government, corporations, nationalism, war, propaganda, science at any cost, eugenics, cloning, cults, and so on, I don't know what they were playing. But to be fair, I see the same sort of things in other fandoms, people missing things in Doctor Who, Star Trek, Star Wars, Babylon 5, and other series, then getting upset later on and trying to say these things were never like that.

Hey, just discovered your channel. Enjoyed the 3 videos I've watched so far. You have a great personality for it. I enjoy your take on the political themes of fallout and the meta take on how it's received and reacted to in the real world. I think you have an interesting niche to fill in the fact that you seem to be pretty moderate politically with a lot of experience with the far left, could be used to kind of show both sides the middle ground and specificly give the far....ish right a look into the moderate left. I don't really like the comment videos, it's either low blows against idiots, telling us that you care to much about what they're saying, or a low grab for content. Ehh, i wouldn't worry. Haters are gonna hate. You can't please everyone, and people have varying views. Make the content that you are proud of and focus on the content that makes you happy. ❤ you are doing a great job. Dont get lost in the negativity. it will only harm you as a person. Constructive criticism is good, but outright hate because you have different ideals or political views, can't have intelligent conversations. People like to listen to what they want to hear, and if its opposed to ones beliefs. They shut down. I think that's the problem with this world. No one listens. They hear what they want, and they categorize you without knowing all of the facts. Not knowing if you really dig deep, they are probably more similar than they may think. Now days, no one wants to be challenged in their ideals. It's a "i am right, and you are wrong society." Not knowing that we can bounce ideas off of each other to make a better world. "Welcome to the brave new world, with such people in it." Sorry for the long post. Keep up the solid work! ❤

Ugh, that happens all the time where someone presumes that your position is in opposition to theirs despite the fact that you’re in _agreement_ with them. And it happens regardless of political affiliation. Sometimes they’ll acknowledge the misunderstanding and be refreshingly courteous, but far too often they just want to be antagonistic and will deliberately misinterpret what you say or incorrectly infer crap that was never stated or implied just so they can engage in a fight. Idk if their pugnaciousness is from insecurity, superiority, stubbornness, self-victimization, black-and-white thinking, sadism, or genuine stupidity. Regardless, those being needlessly combative rarely wish to actually reach an understanding or have a cordial conversation. They just want to quarrel. You know, I'm sorry you have to deal with all that online ... (I don't want to say nonsense, because in some cases, some people really are hurting, but in others, well, you understand). What cracks me up, is that people come online into KZread or other platforms and you're right, they do treat it like a shopping mall with stores instead of as a sense of community with mini tribes. And they argue or disagree with their tribes/families/circles in real life all the time. But with online, you say one word and it's like, nope, I'm out. People have forgotten a lot of courtesies in this world. They really have gone back to judging books by their covers (or, in this case, by a word). They don't stick around to really find out the truth for themselves or to listen and see what person is about. They look at the labels and tags, etc., and immediately jump to incorrect conclusions. They listen to respond, not to hear. It's truly sad. Please don't let them stop you from making your videos. You enjoy a good discourse, anyone can understand that when you are talking about the show. You're invested and you're mind is going and you're really sharing your thoughts, not hedging or hiding. It's like talking to a friend about the show instead of watching someone I've never met. I did happen to agree with you about that scene and for the same reasons. Yet, even if I hadn't, the rest of the video was fun, engaging and even gave me some things to mentally chew on (like the discovery of why I really connect with the Ghoul's character). I wouldn't waste that and am glad I didn't miss it. There are more like me here. We are listening and enjoying the content. So, keep up the good work.
