Dyscalculia and Fallout: The Struggle with In-Game Navigation

I apologize if there are technical glitches - I had a hell of a time mired in glitches trying to get this video out there and decided to just take what I could get so I could move on with my life 😅
We’re gonna get a little personal today. I want to share my experiences as a neurodivergent gamer navigating Fallout, but also gaming culture in general. As someone with ADHD, autism, and dyscalculia, playing video games can present challenges, particularly when it comes to in-game navigation and spatial awareness. I open up about the emotional and mental struggles I face while playing Fallout, from getting lost in dungeons to the overwhelming sense of frustration and isolation that can arise.
I want to tell you about how my neurodivergence impacts my gaming experience and coping strategies I've developed to manage them. I also address the broader issue of accessibility in video games, calling for more understanding and support from the gaming community.
I invite fellow gamers to share their thoughts and suggestions for mods or tools that can help improve the gaming experience for neurodivergent players. By raising awareness and fostering empathy, I hope to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for all of us. 💖

oh my god, thank you! I'm AuDHD/OCD/traumatized and while I have a decent sense of direction IRL, I have this experience in games, especially Fallout. even this morning I had a hell of a time leaving Dunwich Borers in FO4. my least favorite is the Tunnel of Love in FO76... the exit door marker does nothing for me, I *will* spend ten minutes after the event ends just trying to leave the damn building. and I'm always overencumbered because like in real life, I "need" everything. it's so stressful. I think I've done the Power Armor thing too. I'm just really happy I'm not alone.

@@lindsaysfallout if your screen is close to your face, then changing FOV settings will probably help. however, if you're playing on console, you may have to install a mod unfortunately. however, i have found that switching to the "third-person" camera helps with navigating the environment. it really bothers me that even with bethesda's latest game, starfield, they did not include an FOV slider at launch. I struggled with the same frustration in dungeons as you described. My ex, told me “you should go every place ,except we’re you’re “supposed” to go.” It’s better. It took the pressure off. Instead of trying to find my way in frustration, the paradigm shifted to “I’m just wandering around to see if I missed things”. I know this won’t help everyone, but if it helps anyone it was worth sharing.

YES. Even in BG3, the goblin camp might as well be a maze. I get SO lost in places with repetitive patterns, it's not even funny. The feeling of dread I get when I'm going past the same door that leads to a bathroom for the 90th time while trying to find my way out of a building in Fallout is also the opposite of great. And I'm not even diagnosed with anything, so that is a (debatable) neurotypical's take too. Also, the BoS part in New Vegas was just absolute h e l l. Only did it in one playthrough because I couldn't even fathom going back to that place. If frustration has a home, it's right there.

As someone on the other side of this, I'm also frustrated. For some reason I got the type of neurodivergence that makes me really good at most video games, but on the flip side I have a compulsion to finish games (like, I can actually start getting anxious and frustrated if I spend too much time away from a game without fully completing it). Sometimes, I have to look up how to get really obscure achievements or beat a really hard optional boss or whatever, and that usually involves asking the community for help. _The amount of times I have gotten "get gud" as practically the sole response to my inquiries makes me want to put a hole in my monitor._ Like, has the gaming scene as a whole really become so averse to people asking for help that they feel the need to be openly hostile to anyone asking questions? I don't get it.

I get the same type of frustration a lot, and what I end up doing in bethesda games is just cheating my way out of the spiral. I mostly use teleport commands to take me to a quest place if i've been there before, or to get out of mazes. I try to limit their use because abusing them ends up cheapening the whole experience imo. I loved that in Fo76 you can fast travel from inside buildings (but they removed interior maps which makes it really frustrating when i'm trying to backtrack or explore where I haven't been. Also rotating minimaps - I always turn those off - having North be fixed helps a LOT with orientation, and just in general navigation knowing the cardinal directions easily is a huge help.

What it adds to your game is a work station for a settler and these craftable beacons. How it works is you put these beacons in a container along with your junk and your settler will go and get it and put it in the workbench for the settlement they come from. It's a really convenient mod.

Not sure if this might help, but I tend to use the "stick to a wall" method when I'm looking in unfamiliar places, or games without a decent minimap for indoor spaces (looking at you, Fallout 76, just a couple of days ago I got into a massive cave which I was only able to figure my way around like that). The basic premise is, you choose a direction (left or right only) when you first load in to a place, and keep following that particular wall. If you get lost, doesn't matter, you only need to remember which wall you chose to follow at the start of the maze. The way mazes/interior locations get populated in games means that you will always end up back at the starting point eventually. Or at least an exit. Of course, you then might need to go back in and try following the other wall, if you end up in a particularly segmented dungeon, but beats having to spend spoons dropping breadcrumbs and then remembering to follow them back. Another potentially helpful trick might be dropping a piece of loot at the entrance of rooms you fully explored. Then you know there's nothing beyond that doorway. I do a slight variation of this by making sure I open all the doors, so when I get to an open door, I know I've already been to that room. But I do not have the same limitations as you, merely keeping the doors open might not be enough. Also, I do think playing with someone else (or multiple someones) that can be your GPS if or when you need it can be an excellent choice. If a lack of a GPS is the problem that keeps you from fully enjoying a game, and if the game doesn't natively accommodate your needs, anything you need to do to get that GPS which will allow you to enjoy the game is valid, IMO.

It allows you to generate a green "path" tracer towards your nearest objective when you enter V.A.T.S. mode. I don't have quite the same spacial dyscalculia, but I do often find myself lost in Fallout and retreading the same ground, and VANS helps get around that (particularly when I want to get out of a building once I've done all the things I want to in it).

It would be nice if a company like Zenimax/Bethesda were proactive on a title creating two versions, one in their normal well known style and one that is scaled down somewhat and simplified for that audience. There is no reason why someone who has played the entire game dozens of times with thousands of hours should get lost for 10 minutes trying to find the leader of the raiders there. And honestly the Corvega assembly plant is the tip of the iceberg with the issues. It's not just that Bethesda doesn't design for neurodivergency, they just genuinely are bad at dungeon design.

i'd love to hear your opinions on what would make areas more navigable. would it help if there were more unique and memorable visual features? are there types of interior layouts that are easier to navigate, like if they are symmetrical or not?

I thought it was just a me thing! I have suspected that i might have discalculia, I constantly get lost in fallout games. I hate that there are so many floors but the map shows it as a single layout. I end up wasting so much time thinking i missed the objective walking in circles and getting very frustrated when the entire time i was on the wrong floor and missed a staircase i hadn't seen before

I agree! Still have a hard time with the nav on fo4 - I’m used to games like RDR2 with the mini map and the highlighted trail which helps so much. I have to constantly check my pip boy to make sure I’m facing the right direction to where I wanna go and the slider thing at the bottom does nothing for me lol

it really blows how harsh people can be when it comes to "difficulty"/skill differences. i remember breaking down over math homework as a kid bcus it just didn't make sense, and unfortunately i got the whole "it shouldn't be this hard for you, you're just not trying hard enough" bullshit. 100% recommend looking into accessibility mods to make playing easier - i know it gets exhausting having to put in the extra work, but i'd argue its always worth advocating for yourself - & fuck anyone who just tells you to "git gud", those people are chuds lmao

Some of the dungeons in Fallout 4 can be incredibly hard. The quest that sends you from Vault 88 to Hallucigen comes to mind. Navigating the Hallucigen building is wild. That's my least favorite part of the Vault 88 DLC. I'd love to watch you stream Fallout 4, and I'd be more than happy to help you navigate when I can. I'd say go for it. Are you thinking KZread, Twitch or somewhere else?

That sounds rough. I know I have that problem until I've played a game enough to where it's iny memory. I wanted to ask though if you knew about the perk V.A.N.S. in vanilla Fallout4? It will overlay a lit pathway to your closest active objective marker. Just keep an unfinished quest in your "to do" list and it could even used to find ways out. I this is helpful.

  • @lindsaysfallout

    @lindsaysfallout

    27 күн бұрын

Actually, yes! I forgot to bring this up! I do have that perk in Fallout 4, but it seems to never be applicable when I need it. Like in the scenario I mentioned in the video, I was looking for my power armor, not a quest marker, so it didn't apply. But it's definitely better than nothing. I hope in the future Fallout treats this like an accessibility need instead of a perk though.

So... Skyrim is as old as time and I still don't know the way to high hrothgar. Every single year since launch, I've had that urge to play a lil bit of Skyrim, and in every single playthrough, I'm getting lost, ending up in Ivarstead, giving up and trying to parkour up untill I find a road. Only found the right path once, and to this day I've never seen it again.

It’s a thing! And everyone being mean doesn’t help! I really feel like people just don’t grasp that they really are people that can’t do this, we’re not just being impatient or not valuing the skill, our brains just literally can’t do it. There isn’t enough education in this world to prepare people for the reality of how truly different all of our brains are. But Bethesda and major video game developers should be aware.

I don't know if you've ever played '7 Days to Die' That game uses a "follow the light" path for navigating points of interest. You can literally just move toward the most obvious light source, and find a ladder, or a door. Then once in that room/hallway you look for the next light bulb, or table lamp, or shop light. I often think of 7Days when I think of Fallout, it's got that survival scavenging and modifiable weapons vibe down.

I always turn off the 7th day horde, because I don't like time pressure. It's got lots of customize options, *and* you can change the options for a given save file at any time, you could even just turn off all the enemies if you wanted to just build a giant base without being attacked, and then turn them back on again. Makes me wonder if one or more of the devs are a bit neurodivergent.

I find it interesting that I struggle with things you struggle with in game are things I exclusivley struggle with irl and yes lacking accomodations are so frustrating, and you have to deal with that shit doing a leisure activity, while nondisabled ppl would probably find the accomadations we need infanitlizing I believe any difficulty in gaming should be optional and not the default, adding accomodations you can customize shouldnt be considered a demand to use them by nondisabled players.

You get it, you get it, you get it! I wish I had used that wording in this video - that a big issue is that a lot of the neurotypical (or folks who believe they are NT) gamer crowd find our accommodations infantilizing. Because they think it’s weak and shameful to need what we need, which is why “ableism” is a word. You’re right, we should at least have the options/settings, and if anyone thinks we’re infantile for that, that’s their problem!

  • @SuperGod2099

I don't know if it helps, but I think video game dungeons tend to be uniquely hard to navigate. I don't think I have discalcula, math was my weakest subject, but in a "gifted kid" way, and my IRL sense of direction is above average while walking (but completely goes away in a car, part of my autistic aversion to driving), and I still feel like I spend over half my time in any video game dungeon being lost unless I use mods, look things up, or otherwise "cheat". Like, maybe the "git gud" crowd is fine, but I'd bet the hypothetical "average" Fallout 4 player spends several total hours lost per playthrough. I really think game developers would find even their users without disabilities happier with their experience if they made these things easier to navigate.

@@lindsaysfallout ive never seen someone else with dyscalculia before. ill say i dont have the same struggles as you, in real life im pretty good at remembering routes and can generally find my way back to an area i recognize, but certain games can be really difficult. minecraft is the worst for me because its not a finite map, the new zelda games were also a struggle at times because of how big the map is. i didnt even realize this was something that other people struggled with because most of my friends dont have that issue at all, my boyfriend has played overwatch for a long ass time but it still baffles me how he has every single map memorized along with all locations of the health packs meanwhile i get lost and lead myself down dead ends almost every time i play. i didnt even know dyscalculia caused this because i never really looked into what my diagnosis meant other than that i cant do math.
