-- PRESENTATION: INTERVIEW ONO HA ITTO RYU : MIYAUCHI HAJIME & SUZUKI YUKIKO --
Ono Ha Itto Ryu is the oldest of the many Ittō-ryū styles which branched off from Ittōsai Kagehisa “Ittō Ryu”. Created at the beginning of the 17th century by Ono Jiroemon Tadaaki, the Ono Ha Itto Ryu is a dueling Kenjutsu style focused on the Kiri-otoshi technique (cutting down), the school has a crossed history with many other Kōryu, including Daitō-ryū Aiki-jūjutsu, perhaps even modern Aikido, and is one of the main influences that led to the creation of Kendo.
Today, we interview Miyauchi Hajime, one of the main Deshi of Sasamori sensei. Former policeman, and adept of Ono Ha Itto Ryu Kenjutsu, Chokugen Ryu Onaginata-jutsu, Shin Muso Hayashizaki Ryū Battojutsu, Shibukawa Ryū Jutte-jutsu, and Aikido (Yoshinkan).
To accompany him, Suzuki Yukiko, the niece of the former Sōke and the granddaughter of the very famous Sasamori Junzō, representative at the Kobudō Shinkōkai for 3 of those four schools, which makes her one of the most remarkable female practitioners of her time.

This was a wonderful interview. Technically, I really like the subtle yet powerful blade on blade work showed here. Philosophically and spiritually, it was a real treat to listen to the words of these two formidable teachers. Thank you for sharing.

It is nice to see Suzuki-san! Can I ask when the footage of this group training in the Reigakudo was shot, and how it came to be used in this video?

It was shot in 2018. For some reasons, the video was put on hold on their request, and we finally received the greenlight for publication a a few months ago (took us a few months as we had to redo the editing from the beginning).

I dont think Christians should be in possession of the Itto Ryu. That is a contradiction.

No, it's a paradox. There is a bit of difference.

@@transentient love thy neighbor and turn the other cheek, etc. I'm not religious so it doesn't necessarily bother me but from my limited study, the Itto ryu is a no frills approach to dispatching an enemy. How does a Christian embrace this killer attitude? It is not a paradox it is a contradiction. The same goes for a Christian joining the armed forces. The new testament is pretty clear on the conduct a Christian should have.

Koryu have changed a lot in 200 years. It's no paradox, nor a contradiction, it's just the course of history and society. There are much more Christians in Budo than you can imagine!
