FDSP is a derivative of modeling synthesis which appeared on the Yamaha EX5 exclusively. In this video, I take a look at a more subtle use of the "Tornado" algorithm which helps everyone's favourite EX5 patch, "Celebration" to it's sparkling demeanor, and play some FDSP patches found on the EX5. Hi everyone, I didn't write a script this time, instead I fumbled my way through this video spontaneously and removed the awkward bits later. ;-) Also, the smaller EX7 can do FDSP as well, but with 8 voices only instead of 16.

@@mr_floydst If I stayed where I was in Ontario, Canada I would have kept the EX 5, but I ended up moving to Canada’s East Coast, and I couldn’t keep it (at least I felt I couldn’t keep it) but yes it is definitely a great synth, I even told a Canadian Yamaha rep I found the EX 5 to be a more expressive synth than the Yamaha Motif (I personally thought the Motif was flat sounding, she was surprised by that I preferred the EX 5 over the Motif)

Thank you for this! I have an EX5R bought new in 1998. I love the way it sounds. I still use it today. It has a bug with dumping some types of sysex data over MIDI -- I could never get it to work with my synth patch library software. And I even upgraded the roms at one point. But I would not give up this synth -- there's something about it. I think people are finally starting to discover this cool synth.

Thanks for the demo. Is it my imagination or is the EX5 having a renaissance of sorts? 15 years ago it was almost impossible to find any videos on KZread showing the EX5 now there’s a bunch. I guess it’s because it’s officially 25 years old. I still have my EX5 that I bought new in 1999. I maxed the RAM, Flash with last Firmware and replaced the 3.5 Floppy for a SCSI 1 GB Zip drive. It’s been studio kept the whole time. Went from a SY77. I am primarily a guitar player and have used soft synths in the interim along the EX. However, I’m seriously looking at the new Montage when it’s released. At 59 years old I figure it will be the last hardware synth purchase I buy. Thanks again!!👍

I've been posting EX5 content quite regularly over the last 5 or 6 years, and as you, I'm eager to see what Yamaha has on offer with it's next Montage workstation! Oh, haha, there's always a time and a space for another synth. This is not an age related thing. Synth is life, synth is love or so they say. ;-)

Dang that audio stutter when changing parameters with the jog wheel gave me audio Nastagia... I bought one of these in college, it was expensive for me at the time but I wanted to make electronic/IDM on it and I thought it would be an all in one machine. My attention was divided by school and other things and at the end of the day I couldn't figure out how to actually get it to do anything I liked. Not so much not being able to understand it on a technical level, it was more that I didn't have an understanding of workflow and I eventually sold it. I've been tempted lately to get one again just to see if I could make it work now that there are so many resources for learning how to actually create a track.

Hi, thanks for watching! The EX5 is a great synthesizer, but a horrible workstation ;-) You _can_ create tracks on this, but there are so many concessions you have to make to the underpowered CPU that you just end up recording track after track in your DAW (or use the EX5 to complement your other tracks). When building performance patches, a maximum of 2 can have their insert effects switched on, so all the other patches you use in your track will sound not as rich as they sound in single voice mode, for example. Also, using FDSP reduces your maximum polyphony greatly. If you're looking for a keyboard that's capable of creating tracks, the MODX is the better choice really. Or MPC, which has a superb sequencer and audio tracks. But then again, none of these can give you that feeling of nostalgia.

@@mr_floydst Thanks for the reply and info. I'm off that all in one bandwagon now. Interesting to hear it's difficult to use as a workstation. Buying gear while broke in the early 2000s was tough. With hindsight I would have been better spending my money on collecting Electribes or - if I had realized they where used to make some of my favorite tracks - learning to use a tracker. Benn Jordan's video on how he made music back then made me realize too that I probably could have made it work if I had too - I had too many other distractions and interests.
