Only DUTCH people know this! #4

A bunch of twigs? What is typical Dutch about it?
Why are children afraid of it?
That's what we asked the language students of the Dutch Summer School...
Explanation:
* roe (tuchtroede): birching rod; part of the Sinterklaas celebration (in the past)... children who behaved well got presents, naughty children got 'de roe'. Mostly used as a threat... either to get beaten, but later as a threat to get it in your shoe as a gift (in stead of presents), similar to Santa Clause giving coal. Nowadays, it's not common anymore that parents use this threat. Nevertheless, you might still sometimes see Zwarte Piet carrying one. The 'roe' had in some regions also a different meaning: a symbol of fertility.

In Switzerland we have the „Samichlaus“ or in romansh „Sontga Clau“ he came to our house and told us what we haven't done that well in the past year and what we need to change and had to promise him to improve. We got a bag with chocolate, peanuts, walnuts, mandarins and tangerines. Our parents got such a „Rute“ or „torta“ for us😂 they never used it but it was good to scare us😂 the Samichlaus also said if we are to naughty he will put us in his big bag where all the smaller gift bags were in and would carry us with him, so we were scared of him and had a lot of respect😂

That's really similar! In Dutch the Rute is called a "Roe". and we get pepernoten ("Nuts" made out of gingerbread), candy and mandarins/tangerines. And if you're naughty you get the roe or you get put in the bag and taken back to Spain.

Except I never ever saw any Zwarte Piet with one. It's in this one old song. But never EVER have I seen any in their hands. And I was born in the sixties. To me Zwarte Piet was someone funny. Someone to look up to as well. Someone, who was good at gymnastics and making us kids laugh. Someone to give nice smiles and treats. We all loved Zwarte Piet. Because of de Zwarte Pieten, no one was afraid in my small town, when the first dark skinned people came to live there. We all had kind associations. Too bad other people tried to make it into something nasty.

I do think it's important to note that children *used to be* scared of the Roe. Not any more. No Pete working for Sinterklaas (Black or otherwise) has been seen with a Roe in a few decades. Not as long as I can remember, at least, which would be since the start of the 1990s. If you think of the Sinterklaas celebration as one gigantic two-week-long nationwide stage play, and Dutch children being the intended audience for that stage play, then Black Pete is (in modern times at least) the audience-insert Character. The Petes are the people children identify with. They're playful. They're funny. They are kind in a fun way where Sinterklaas is kind in a strict way. They can also be naughty, or at least make attempts at being naughty, until Sinterklaas inevitably catches them and sets them straight. This teaches children that having the impulse to do naughty things is perfectly natural, and they get to meet others who understand this impulse, while at the same time teaching them they should listen to their parent figures and not actually act on those naughty impulses. Black Pete, then, has through working in tandem with Sinterklaas become a figure of positive reinforcement, as opposed to one of negative reinforcement. I love Black Pete. I always have. And I will defend him (or them, if you prefer) until my dying breath.

Juist!

No. Zwarte Piet is based off the moor soldiers sent by the king of Spain to aid the duke of Alfa in subduing Holland (the Netherlands didn’t exist yet) and basically bringing it back into the fold of the (then very powerful) Catholic Church. The moors were very black, wore gold earrings, silk clothes and were ruthless murderers. Entire villages were murdered. Men, women, children, cattle, even the dogs. As an example. That’s why zwarte Piet exists. As a reminder to the brutalities, so we would be “good”. Of course, nowadays it’s all about “racism”.

@@sadkingbilly I've been brought up with the version of children that were nearly eaten, put into a barrell with salt. And then rescued by the Saint and given jobs to provide for themselves (and given a home, in the castle) and in return, their work was to go through the chimneys and distribute candy. Pretty sure that's where Herman Finkers got his 'kids being nearly eaten'-Sinterklaas-story from, when he wrote one for Douwe Egberts Coffee. "Sinterklaas en de arme kindertjes" it's called, it's a marvelous and hilarious modern book.

What the tradition was when I was younger (and maybe it still is, I don't know) is that in the evening, when it was dark outside and you were playing with some toys on the carpet, SUDDENLY someone was hitting the windows with the "roe" and your mother or father would scream: "Zwarte Piet!!!" And we were all scared shitless, and at the same time longing to see him. The excitement!!! If you had behaved well, he would come into the house and throw some hands of candies and pepernoten into the living room. Then he mostly quickly left and we were fighting to get the most candy. The Zwarte Piet was sometimes the neighbour (of course, he was being asked by your parents to dress up etc.) but it could also be your older brother or sister. Sometimes, it would be your father, going outside with some lame excuse like "I'm off to talk to the neighbours" or "I'm going to get some cigarettes", only to quickly hit the windows with some branches and then toss in some candy. And then a few minutes later, he'd be walking back in like nothing happened. "Dad, daddy!! Zwarte Piet was here!!!!" Great memories!!!

Hello Bart. I didn't know about "de roe". In Spain, naughty children are given a bag full of coal, but it doesn't happen very often. If parents buy coal, it's as a joke and then their children also get their precious gifts. 🎁 It's more a psychological fact of being scared of getting coal instead of a gift. But... Weren't Dutch children taken to Spain as a punishment? My country isn't that bad: we have a good weather and delicious dishes. It sounds more like holidays to me. If Spain is so bad, why do Dutch retired couples buy houses in Spain to live until the end of their lives? Admit it: Dutch love Spain, so they mention it in all kind of contexts and traditions. 🤣😂

The threat is of course more about being taken away from your family to live in a strange country than about the country itself. However, don't forget that the 80 Year War of Dutch independence agains the Spanish empire is a very big part of our historical consciousness too! Of course, that makes Spain have not as good as a reputation in many of our older stories. However, the beautiful weather and good food do make up for a lot of those ancient enmities too ;)

@@yltraviole I know. 🙂 It's traumatic for children to be away from their family because it's the time when they need their parents the most. I also know about the 80 years war. I have been teased about it a few times in KZread comments. It's Dutch humour, so I wrote this comment as a joke too. I'm not proud of the History of Spain, because all kings were selfish to adquire new lands destroying everything at their way, but everything is forgotten. Dutch and Spanish have a good relationship after all. We admire each other. 😉

@@cristina_garcia Oh, it definitely wasn't my intention to make you feel bad! Just looking at our own history, it's not like the Dutch are all that innocent either! I've always heard that the 80 year war isn't very well known in Spain, just kind of a historical blip, which I always thought was funny because it wad the war that basically created our country! It's an interesting difference in perspective. But yeah, Spain is a beautiful country. I really want to visit Barcelona after I'm done with my study.

@@yltraviole oh, don't worry. You didn't make me sad. I'm just critic with our own history. But yes, you're right. If you ask Spanish people about the 80 years war, most part of population don't even remember it. Teachers don't insist on it very much. We had many wars, so that was just another one. On the other hand, I understand that it was one of the most important facts in your history due to the Independence of The Netherlands. For us, it was a shame, but Spain had still many colonies in power. 🤣 Regarding Barcelona, I have never been there. It's beautiful in photos and I'd love to be there some day, but I have to tell you that it's better that you wait for some time before coming. The situation due to the attempt of independence is still complicated. There were strong manifestations last month, and it was a bit violent. It's calmed nowadays, but the government should dialogue before conflicts rise up again. On the other hand, Alicante is a quiet region, but it's fun too. 😉

They let unnessecairy pieces of land flood when a city is attacked 🤣 but it worked! When the spainish invated Antwerpen, the dutch blocked the river so they couldnt supply or trade🤣 So when they where weak, the watergeuzen, part of the Netherlands attacked back, and that's the point spainish give up🤣 They used That tactic again in ww2! Hitler hoped to invade the Netherlands within 2 hours! Bit the dutches led important An stratigic pieces of land flood, Too deep to walk but to low for boats. After 2 days Hitler decited to bomb Rotterdam, within 10 minutes, the whole city was flat, if the Netherlands didn't give up, Hitler would bomb Amsterdam and den haag too, so we give up. As the Dutch word "roede" literally means "rod", that bundle of twigs is not a "roede", linguistically. Before Christianity, Europe celebrated the winter solstice. Generally this was a bunch of fertility rites. A fir (conifer) tree with fruit (maybe fake)? Desiduous trees had to get their leaves back, and produce fruit again. Same with now barren farm fields. And as women stop ovulating when it's cold and dark, that had to come back again. Run the streets naked, beat each other with these bundles of twigs, was part of these rites, for younger, unmarried men and women. After the Christians hijacked the winter solstice, the bundle of twigs moved into the sauna in Eastern Europe. In Western Europe it moved to earlier in December when a sanatized sanctioned rite played, initially associated with starting formal relationships: St. Nicolas's name day or eve thereof. The bishop had helped women to marriage. The Black Peter, Krampus', etc. that had a role in the old winter solstice now migrated to this celebration too. Interesting what people forget. Little innocent kids sing "St Nicolas little capun", not knowing they are calling him "castrated rooster" in that (neither do their parents and teachers).
