    It was not malicious or controlling at all. I understand the bantering tone getting lost in translation but why are you offended by it? The way she was behaving and their reaction to her over-the-top ness during school functions was a common reaction by Indian family members and poo and Shahrukh both in the same "I don't know her" kind of way. It wasn't toxic, unlike Amitabh Bacchan's character which was more problematic on a regular basis. That's how you behave when you are comfortable around someone even though you love them - just as long as you are not disrespectful or abusive.

    Achara is absolutely correct on that NRI obsession thing, back in the days movie producers always wanted a shot setup in foreign countries instead of India but made it portray as india because the audience loved it and you already know why😂. This was all post colonial identity crisis which we are suffering since the independence. It's alll due to ignorance of a country whose historical literatures kept burning for 6 months straight and a country considered as golden bird was made a third world country.

    There's a difference in smarter and knowledgeable, she just has a bit more knowledge than jaby in terms of "old bollywood movies" but jaby never disagrees her and he's better than Achara in some of others scenario. It's just that he sometimes compare some of these old movies with today's once and come on who doesn't do it even i mistakenly chuckle sometimes when i focus on those crazy ass dramatic sounds and vfx. And you gotta admit unlike today at that time our vfx and quality of movies in general used to be really worse as compared to Hollywood.

    Achara very well summarised difference between 90s movie and today’s audience who sees cinema. In 90s it was all about fiction and fantasy, audience wanted a break from reality. Now the audience want relatability and representation, they want their street stories and not an unbelievable world. Also, That time for Bollywood majority revenue was from upper class and outside NRIs, and now as paying capabilities are increasing they are shifting more towards desi and raw movies. Also in 80s 90s the whole immigration wave came and may be that’s why locations/stories outside India.

    I found Jaby's comments about overt patriotism interesting. As an Indian living in the US, I've often thought about how weird it is that Americans make such a display of their patriotism. For example, outside of Independence and Republic day, you would be hard-pressed to find anything Indian tricolor-themed anywhere in India. Similarly, chants of 'India India' would be considered completely out of place anywhere except probably in an international cricket match. Americans, on the other hand, to me at least, seem to wear their patriotism on their sleeves. Every other house on my block has an American flag outside and I've been asked multiple times by people how I like being in the 'greatest country in the world'. I guess we're just bound to notice the things we are not used to. (Of course, as far as this movie is concerned, Karan Johar is just being extra like in everything else he does lol.)

  • @PurpleMoon31

    @PurpleMoon31

    Completely agree. I was thinking the same. I have never been to America but just from their movies, tv shows, and general politics, they seem to be extra patriotic bordering on insanity. In this movie, it's all just Karan Johar being as unrealistic as he can be. He is completely out of touch when it comes to the actual populace of India excluding rich people.

    Most of Jaby's observations were on point, Achara (as always) was just maturely trying to cover them up to avoid being offensive, haha. As a Gen Z Indian, I 100% agree that this movie was extremely misogynistic and portrayed a lot of flaws not only in Indian society but also movie-making (the dialogue between the grandmas, for example was super fake). A movie on these lines today wouldn't be received well, people are gradually becoming more progressive. Karan Johar is the most overrated director in Indian cinema (maybe not his fault, because he just feeds on the expectancy of the majority of Indian population)

    A very good point made by jaby about srk dismissing kajol and how he didnt find it funny. Made me think alot. Now that i think of it, its like this with all indian womwn. Our husband like us sassy/silly 'before marriage' but thats not becomes a dislike after marriage. Thank you for making that toughtful point. 🥰

    And it is all Karan Johar's MO, to showcase the Indian audience the upper class. The students of his films always taught in Oxford themed schools, all rich kids, have father figures have large palaces. He represents that 1% of India. This used to work in the 90s. But thanks to audience this is evolving. That's why his films don't work anymore.

    A country that gets independent after fighting a battle so long that it took over 200 years, it's obvious that people will show the love and pride and dedication to the motherland over explicitly. Know it's true when an Indian says, showing love to his / her country makes him/ her the happiest.

    12:48 : During the 1990's a lot of Indians were recruited overseas to help solve the millennium bug. There was sort of a cultural revolution going on, similar to Japan in the 1980's. People working overseas were looked up to, and were considered to have made it in life. To showcase the protagonist as someone successful, that was the way to go.

    Davis's music is DOPE, btw!! Also I don't remember the film perfectly, though as Jaby pointed out why SRK tried to curb(not exactly the word, but something similar) Kajol's free spiritedness, I think it was not because he wanted to curb her, he just wanted to act responsible and mature as they had grown up and had a child, along with free spirited Poo, while enjoying Kajol's antics himself..
