ONLY A FEW LOCO HAULED TRAINS LEFT! - Tottenham Railway Station

This week Schony747 is at Tottenham Railway Station in Melbourne's Western Suburbs. Monday to Friday there is only a handful of V/Line Locomotives Hauled Commuter passenger trains still in service. With over 100 Bombardier Vlocity DMU trains in service, the once common sight of locomotive hauled passenger trains here in Victoria is diminishing. Tottenham is a great place to view these trains as the Regional Rail Link tracks run right past Tottenham Railway Station.
The video also looks at Tottenham Station, it's operations and infrastructure around the station.
Have a great week - Brenden S.

I remember when the Ns were purchased in the ‘80s, hard to believe they are approaching 40 years. In the late ‘70s the standard country train was an AS, BS and up to 3 wooden cars pulled by a T class. The more premium destinations like Swan Hill and Bairnsdale had X, B S locos with an AZ BZ a buffet car or MBS mini buffet and up to 3 wooden cars. The Geelong services were mainly anything up to 8 wooden cars. Some were BPL cars with outward swing doors until someone fell out. We used to say BPL stood for Bouncing Passenger Lounge. The BCPL was a BPL with guard’s compartment. Some BCPLs were really bad. In the old Spencer Street Station, there was a large poster photo behind the information desk, it was of “The Vinelander” approaching Melbourne with a first series T class.

I remember the wooden carriages from my kiddie days in Ballarat! They were fun times.
I remember as a kid that the level crossing at Ashley Street and was sad that I couldn't see them from ground level after that. 😬 That ramp is quite the workout on the calves 😬Sucked if you were having an off day though 😬 I also remember as a kid that I'd be asleep and then hear the hump shunting from the goods yard across the road in the Tottenham yards. Good to see the tower still there, albeit not sure how functional it is these days. 😬Always wanted to have a look up there in its heyday 😬 I also remember that they removed the back level crossing that led into the then RAAF Tottenham stores waaaaay after its use-by date. They were the red flashing light with the black square on white writing "stop on red signal". Such a busy hive of activity now 😲

Thanks for the info. It's always fascinating to see the stories from the past that everyone shares.
Nice Video Brendan It’s Sad To See N Class’s go 😢

Yes mate but that's a sign of the times. I suspect we will still see them but in another role at some point.
Great video again Brenden. I remember doing a "Suburban Rambler" trip via Steamrail a few years back when we visited many of those goods lines. Strange to see the NR leading with the long end. Maybe headed for the diamond to turn around?

Those tours are always good fun! The NR was heading to Spotswood for maintenance at UGL.
What will be the fate of the N's and MTH's ? I would like to think the N's will be pressed into Goods Haulage, and the MTH's given to Railway Preservation Groups that can restore them, as well as the Motors, into a Heritage Harris Train Set again.

No idea what will happen with the N class mate. It's all speculation but eventually they will have to end up somewhere. A preserved N with N and H sets would be pretty cool.
Awesome

Thanks bud 😀😀
Great video from Tottenham, i drive along Sunshine Rd often and see many N class hauled trains going past but their numbers are decreasing. Good work on the history of the station, sadly its not a great station and has a very unsafe feel as my wife and others have commented to me.

It's not the greatest station but serves it's purpose. For an enthusiast it's a great station to view most things.
Well lucky i saw this video now i can watch the N classes in their v line livery before other operators

Correct. Head out to the Regional Rail while the trains are still around.
Great Video Brendan, I need to film more loco hauled services myself haha

Yes mate. Get them while they are still here.
Cool video Brenden hope the Ns stay on the H sets they are best for short hauled
@InnocentComeng

Yeah, H sets are really good for the small commute as they don’t have much comfort which is good for commuters. The n sets are designed for long distance trains like from melbourne to Bairnsdale

I'd like to see a full set preserved at some point mate.
Since the H cars r just repurposed Harris EMUs it would be exiting to see them re converted into multiple units for those more used stations and lines just past the electrified lines to increase frequency on those lines kind of like the D Stock London Underground trains that were converted by Viva rail, I doubt it will be done but in an era where re use is becoming more and more common it would be really cool to see especially on lines like the stony point line

Highly unlikely as you say. 9 car sets could run to placed like Wyndham Vale. Then there is the added cost of the loco, staff, shunting etc.
Apparently the X'trapolis 2.0s aren't very far off

What happens to all the redundant locomotives?
@Aaron-eb1ji

Majority will likely be sold off to freight companies, a few may go to heritage.

No one knows mate. It's all pure speculation at the moment.
so they're starting to phase out the loco hauled passenger trains

Have been for a while now mate. With 106 Vlos in service now the sight of loco hauled is becoming less
