Online Courses Are Dead?! LOL, Not Even Close! (Pat Flynn reaction)

Ойын-сауық

One of the legends in the online business space, Pat Flynn, says that online courses are dead. This is the end of selling information. It's the end of info marketing as we know it. And he has a pretty convincing case. But I completely disagree.

I agree, I still buy courses and enroll in memberships! It's a great way to learn from someone you can't afford direct coaching from.

I agree with both of you. I sell information, courses and do coaching for cosmetic doctors and med spas. I find that the course WITH the coaching (implementation) is the most desirable product.

I think people are only comparing to 2020 and thats why they are having this perception. If I see from 2017 when I started selling courses, I see a big bump on 2020, then it dropped… and If I choose to see from that year, it seems that its droping. But if I delete 2020 from the ecuation, the income seems raising. 2020 and the begining of 2021 where an unusual period, can't use it to compare to the usual data.

Very helpful. I agree with the overwhelm of communities. I joined one from Sean Cannell, and wow. Too much low-level activity in the community setting. I realized I prefer self-paced and orderly with the promise of transformation.

I agree with you about courses. Without digging into statistics, I believe some courses fail because their layout is time-wasting (fluff), cluttered (so much info it’s hard to see the end of the destination), or the layout is hard to follow.

I love Pat. He sells community. What wouldn’t he convince people of that. However of the courses Ive marketed the majority of people buying never even log in. Then of those that login a majority don’t complete the course. Then of those that complete the course only a percentage of those have success with the information from the course. Success comes with action, feedback on the action taken and accountability. A course usually doesn’t provide that. Where a community or coaching does. The courses I’m marketing now incorporate community, coaching and accountability. They are seeing both drastically higher completion and success rates. In the vast world of information, action, even mediocre action, is better than just consuming. Can you make a ton of money selling courses? Absolutely. But if you want to serve people and better their lives, incorporate another way to provide more feedback, encouragement, and accountability.

I watched Pat's video and left a comment there when it came out... the key as you're saying early on here is that it's not just about having a course ... it's about building around the course and helping people accomplish the thing the course is teaching, by having additional offers to help them finish and reach the end goal.

Maybe courses are dead, but selling info is not really changing. Now the trend is switching from online courses to memberships/communities and everyone is just selling Skool communities right now. Hormozi invested in Skool so I think that is a pretty good sign that info products are here to stay.

I think that the picks of 2020-21 were an anomaly based on the fact that people were extremely bored at home during the lockdowns of COVID. Then normal life came back, so also normal "consuming" of online products.

This is so helpful. I have been running a community for about six months and am working on a course. I’m struggling with whether to have the community be included in the course price (for life) or offer it as a future add on. Do you have a video that goes into detail on this? I’m also interested in exploring best way to give group access during the course itself (for live check ins). I’m considering telegram but maybe a Kajabi group makes more sense. Thank you!

  • @GrahamCochrane

Great question. You could include access to the community for 90 days (or a year) when they purchase the course and then offer them a way to stay in the community for a monthly fee afterwards. Kajabi communities would work well for this. You can even do live group calls inside of Kajabi courses now.

@@GrahamCochrane Thanks so much for answering my questions. I didn't know about the live group call inside Kajabi option. That's great. Is that what you use or are you using Zoom? On another note, I've noticed more and more people are telling me they don't use Facebook and so have been considering switching my community (currently housed on Facebook) to Kajabi. You mentioned that you use Kajabi for groups. Is that strictly Kajabi or do you also give people a Facebook or other option? Thanks for all you do. Your videos are great and I'm considering signing up for one of your courses too.

I love this - except - I feel like I have become lost. I joined kajabi, made a music 'how to loop' course which is a good course to teaching musicians how to use loopers or loop pedals both live and at home and then I have a few courses on specific loop pedals like the Boss RC-500 and RC-600 pedals.. but I just feel like it was meant to all becoming automatic based on kajabi's funnels and emails and feel like it drying up.. and dont know what to teach other than what I know. I dont want to become one of those statistics that goes back to a day job and fails. Consistent on youtube and just thought my kajabi courses would work harder for me. been tempted to drop prices but them feared about low ticket and de-valuing the products.

YES! YES! YES! In my model, the course is my front door. After that, they see the value of a community (even small cohorts) and they become subscribers. Then some of them go to coaching. 1) Intriguing book 2) Leeds to deeper dive into a course 3) Recognize others are like them and wish to be part of the supportive community 4) Some become reach to commit more to further move their needle with coaching.

Absolutely LOVE how you think about this. People talk about "building a community". But very few marketers consider exactly what that journey not only looks like, but FEELS like, for the people in that community. You can't just build a product or course and say, "here you go". You have to build a relationship - a connection - with your audience. One that lasts. One that you commit to for the long-term. And yes, you can have thousands of people in our community and still create that sense of true community - even family. For anyone looking for a great example of how to do this over the long haul, go search out Andre Chaperon. He's the godfather of this stuff, and has been doing it successfully for 20+ years.
