    Your assessment of utilizing Dirac Live via PC vs the Onkyo app is spot on. I was experiencing the exact same issues you were. I will in defense of Onkyo say they at least made an attempt to incorporate their app and Dirac - the app needs modifications, and if Onkyo reads any of your comments I would hope a firmware update in the future on their app would afford the PC flexability. Looking at all three, I base my judgements on the " law of diminishing returns " scenario. That being said, for $1299.00 currently, this still stands out as the best value of the three.

    Very good and methodical look at calibration techniques on the RZ50. Wondering if you could comment in next video on your perception of home theater results from Onkyo, Marantz and Emotiva units calibration. I have never seen anyone yet compare actual calibration results as to how something sounds rather than just measurements between brands. I realize it's subjective but it would really help. Great information and breakdown as normal mate. I know you as an expert user weren't a fan of the mobile app, but for someone like me who don't want to be tinkering, it's perfect for me. At least they give Dirac when the unit is bought and not like D&M where you have to shell out £300 for Dirac plus an extra £100 for a mic. A bit off topic, but your findings that consistently finds the Marantz to be in last place for sound is why I don't buy their stuff. D&M spends too much money on marketing and not on quality DACs/internal components. P.s I'm not a hater of D&M, I just don't like the way they do business, it feels like the consumer lose out. Although it makes them loads of money.

    I'm petty sure the reason you weren't prompted which slot to save your Dirac Live changes with Onkyo Controller is that all three slots were initially empty. Now that you have the slots filled, if you were to run Dirac Live within the Controler again...I believe you would mow be prompted on which slot you would like to save your latest calibration. Either way, one of the better videos focused on room calibration with the TX-RZ50 that I've seen. Thanks!

    Jon this is the best listening comparison and tutorial of room correction software on the net. Thanks for your efforts. Onkyo is certainly no head turner but they are trying after the acquisition by PAC. I’m glad to see they didn’t file Chapter 7 (liquidation). I’ve never been a big fan of auto correcting room software as I have achieved better results using an SPL meter and manual calibration for our 7.2.6 system. 99.9% of what we listen to is spatial audio. Hi resolution audio using the Auromatic selection coupled with a good manual calibration is hard to beat. Now StormAudio just came out with its own room correction software algorithm called Dirac Live Active that incorporates noise canceling technology. I would be interested to hear that demo. For now however that technology is a rich man’s game. Keep up the great work my friend.

    I also agree - direct and pure direct is the natural sound of the processor WITH respect to your room. I personally dont think it would be as accurate because the room colors the sounds. You can have the most neutral equipment, but the room will still add peaks and valleys onto the frequency response and color the sound. So I do think listening in stereo, with dirac engaged is the more accurate sound. But when you do that, all three, IMO should sound the same, assuming each three have the necessary power, because all three will be playing to the filter of the target curve. And this opens up a huge can of worms for discussion because for those reasons above, I still prefer a feature loaded AVR for 2 channel playback, over a normal integrated 2 channel amplifier. NAD just released a FULL feature packed 2 channel processor than can rival an AVR, the NAD M66. It has 4 independent subs, dirac live, and dirac live bass control. But the price of it is kind of out of this world compared to an AVR that can do the same, like the 2023 denon 3800h for example, or the integra 8.4 (only 2 independent subs though) I think going forward in the future, and the popularity of multi channel atmos capable real music rising on apple music for example, an AVR will be the pick over a 2 channel stereo ONLY system.

    I just bought the Onkyo RZ50, so have you ever had an eye or sense for good stuff, then buy it only to realize its way over your head? That would be me. I'm 59 years old and have only experienced a few pieces of nice stero equipment from back in the day that pale in comparison to today's equipment. Even after this video, I'm still a bit muddy on how to go about setting up this beast. However, I will say the PC setup will likely be the best way to go. So far, with limited time on my hands, I've managed to Bluetooth my phone to at least listen to some music through a pair of Klipsch 600M ll and was impressed considering the hearing damage & loss I've had for years...factory work, shooting sports etc. I will be coming back to this informative video since I have to go and buy a laptop now, haha. • @ripewave

    @ripewave

    13 сағат бұрын

    I find it much harder to recommend speakers than other hi-fi components. For your size room I would start with medium sized bookshelf speakers that have good specifications down to at least 50hz to handle the ear level speakers at a minimum. Then I would install a couple of subwoofers that can handle low frequencies down to at least 20hz without 3db deviation. That combination will ensure you can have a full range setup. The RZ50 is middle of the road with ability to drive speakers. So it will do best with efficient speakers. Careful calibration will ensure speakers blend well with subs. After that select speakers you like the tone of. I can’t select that for you as it is so preference driven. -Jon

    Hi Jon, your reporting of the Cinema seems to consistently be last preference, sonically in your video comparisons. Their interface, addition of DIRAC, quad sub outputs, and MultEQ X are great reasons to use them. Curious if you think the Cinema 40 would be a step up? It’s $1k more than the Cinema 50, so I’m assuming that buys you more than just two extra channels. Their components should Also be much improved. Thoughts?

    So far the results have been consistent with the small pool I have tested since I started to use this test setup. I believe the consistency of the tests help to ensure the results are comparable without injecting new variables that would influence the outcome. The Cinema 40 and Cinema 50 are both capable of 9.4.4 speaker layouts. I believe the biggest differences are the amplifiers within, the quality of components used and Japan vs. Malaysia production. With my all same external amplifier approach I could focus on the impact better components provide. I guess the difference is slight, but I showing judge before running that test. -Jon

    I'm in the Market for a new Receiver to replace my twice failed Onkyo Receiver (HDMI). Trying to decide between the TX-RZ50 and the Emotiva MR1 any thoughts and advice?

  • @ripewave

    @ripewave

    Жыл бұрын

    I would first determine your target speaker configuration and your top features which are must haves along with maximum spend. The MR-1 supports more channels of processing 13.1 vs 11.1 and has 11 channels of amplification vs 9 internal. The MR-1’s ability to handle front wide speakers is usually only available on higher end models $3000 and up and still not common; something Onkyo does not address with the TX-RZ50. The MR-1 has balanced subwoofer outputs, which may be better if you are running long distances with rear positioned subwoofers. The TZ-RZ50 is capable of handling up to a 7.1.4 speaker configuration, which is sufficient for many. You will need to add two channels of external amplification to handle that full layout. The Onkyo has HDMI 2.1 support today which the MR-1 will require a board upgrade when Emotiva makes that support available. The Onkyo has Dirac Live, which will likely produce better calibration result than the EmoQ software with the MR-1. The main strength of the MR-1 is its amplifiers, but you may not hear much of a difference. I say “may” as I have not had the chance to review in house that model but the Onkyo amps performed well against external amps under modest load. So without having an MR-1 in house my general feeling is the Onkyo may perform as good or better at a lower cost for most applications. -Jon

    @@ripewave Thanks for the reply. I am leaning towards the Emotiva & Marantz Cinema 50 / SR7015. I've owned two Onkyo receiver and the HDMI cards failed on both the TX-NR809 and 929. They provided good power and were loaded with options but they lacked reliability and I would like to avoid the third times a charm. The Emotiva also boast a Class H power supply which in my experience based on the 5 Soundcraftsmen Class H amplifiers I own are one of the most efficient, powerful and reliable amps I've owned. My other concern with Onkyo receivers is the pre output section (RCA) only produce about 1V output. Emotiva is 2V rms and Marantz is 1.2v rms which in my case is necessary since I own and collect an abundance of vintage Power Amplifiers that require more than 1V signal to perform at their maximum potential, especially the Pro amps. But the biggest eye opener was when I called Onkyo to ask about the RCA Voltage output they had a hell of a time locating the information while Emotiva and Marantz didn't flinch...

    Most room correction systems will manage to somehow EQ your speakers. The real challenge is Subwoofers and of course the low end on large Tower Speakers. That's where some systems like YPAO just fall flat, while Audyssey and Dirac do a good job. I haven't tried AccuEQ on my RZ70, so I can't say how well it handles the Subs, but Dirac with BC MultiSub did almost perfectly, apart from setting the Sub levels a few db too "hot".

  • @ripewave

    @ripewave

    3 ай бұрын

    Yes - the more subwoofers you have will increase the need for a correction system that can independently manage the low frequencies and make phase corrections. In hindsight, when I ran YPAO, it was after I have manually positioned the subwoofer, balanced levels and set phase adjustments directly on the subwoofer controls manually using REW. As such, YPAO didn't have to do much on the subwoofers. Had I placed the subwoofers in a less then ideal location with its settings at the factory default, it would have had needed a lot more help from the processor side calibration. -Jon

It is my feeling that of the models listed, none of them are more “future proof” than the other. The good news is we have reach a point in home theater enhancements whereby the release of new standards has slowed way down and the brands are mostly caught up. For McIntosh Dirac hasn’t come to the MX123 but I believe this mode works even with Audyssey enabled. While the TX-RZ50 supports bi-amping using its internal amplifiers, that facility is only for the front speakers. What I believe you are trying to do is bi-amp using external amplifiers. In that case, you can bi-amp from any receiver with pre-outs, like the TX-RZ50z. You just need a RCA Y-adapter to send the signal to both amplifiers. Nothing the receiver has to do special. Jon

Great work overall. I can imagine this was very time-consuming.

  • @ripewave

    @ripewave

    Nick - You are correct, I did not report on the differences between the UMIK-1 and the included Onkyo microphone. While I did conduct some comparisons and did feel that the UMIK-1 produced between results, I felt my tests were not executed well enough to provide a good report. I wasn't certain if the improvement I was hearing was the result of UMIK-1 or other variations when measuring. Therefore, I skipped for now. On reflection, perhaps I could have. Both measurements used all the same except for the change in microphone and were executed within a day (same 9-point measurement locations, same room, same amps, same speakers, same AVR using the same level settings at the beginning of the process.) I wasn't sure what DIRAC session was loaded into the AVR slots due to the lack of labeling of the slots in the TX-RZ50. Knowing the Onkyo Controller mobile app can provide assurance which DIRAC session is loaded into which slot, I now have the assurance needed to report. Thanks for raising. Yes - a double blind listening test is a more scientific approach, but hard to organize as one-man operation. As an alternative to that, I have been asking my 8-year-old son to give his opinion of what is better. He doesn't know which unit is on input A, B or C, he doesn't know what each model costs or which one is expected to sound better. I change the input, but I do know those details. He just knows what he prefers. I change the order (B-A-C, C-B-A, A-B-C, etc) and he tells me better or worse. His selections have matched mine every time. These differences don't require a golden ear. This video did take a lot longer to produce than others. Thanks for listening and sharing your thoughts. -Jon

    The Emotiva has one thing most processors let alone receivers would never have. Fully Differential Balanced Topology at least in the front channel stages. The others go through summers, and then phase splitters to cut costs. It is part of the reason the Emotiva sounds gutsier than many others. The very high end processors may or may not use fully Differential Balanced Topology. Same would hold true with lots of amplifiers out there. Onkyo has a long to go to prove to me their products deserve my money. I sold them years ago, and they were really good. Same thing with Pioneer Elite. Maybe this 2nd chance might be right. There is another good expert YT video explaining why 4 ohm setting is bad for your sound quality but must be included to comply with energy consumption regulation stuff. That's why the manufacturers offer this setting possibility. As for Denon, they don't have the setting in the OSD, so normal users (those not reading the paper/pdf manual from a-z) will not accidently stumble over it when browsing through the settings menus and submenus, so they won't be tempted to change the default 8 ohm setting towards 6 or 4 ohm. Obviously, Denon does not want users to change this, otherwise they would've included it in the OSD, easily accessible, and also in the setup wizard. Actually, with Denon, you have to press two certain front panel buttons simultaneously for 3+ seconds and then change the setting from here. No user will do this accidentally. Wise design decision by Denon. So they comply with regulatory rules and at the same time ensure optimum sound quality for 99% of users (only the 1% who RTFM systematically run danger of doing the setting worse by setting it to 6 or 4 Ohm). Edit: It is the video from Audioholics called "AV Receiver Impedance Selector Switch: How Should I Set It?"

    Just letting you know there is some sort of high pitch low volume noise in your video that is super annoying when using iems.

    You ask at the end : "What do you think?" I think the title of your video is misleading : "Onkyo TX-RZ50 AV Receiver Sound Quality, Room Calibration vs. Marantz and Emotiva". I was expecting a comparison of the sound quality of those 3 amps. Instead, it's a tutorial about Dirac. I had to suffer a very long and boring video to find out at the end that : "...I won't do a multi channel comparison..." You are skipping over the important part. Who cares about the room correction? Most of the programs are more or less the same. What we want are infos about the quality of the sound! Comparisons about soundstage, dynamics, clarity, punch, seperation, imaging, sound signature, etc. I am shopping for a new amp and I thought this video would help me choose. What a waste of time.

    I appreciate honest feedback. This was a multi-part series where the last part covered the sound quality. I divide into several video as we cover a lot of ground. The audience can decide which part to view. Those mainly focused on the sound quality, then they can skip the first parts and go right to the end. -Jon

    Bought a onkyo tx rz 830 in 2019 , then in 2023 started to function erradicly , took it to the Onkyo dealer in Lisbon ,Portugal named Tecnologica , after 4 months in there thei told me that it was better send it to the trash , because the mother board was malfunction and Onkyo no longer as substituting parts ..... that was a 1500 euros amp.... so.... Did you experience issues with the RZ50? I have had a few report quality issues I did not experience with my unit. I am trying to understand how careful this audience should be with Onkyo products. -Jon
