I just want to say THANK YOU for such a great video! I get frustrated with some gardening videos because people don't take the time to film the whole process, they just film the beginning and talk about the rest. This is literally one of the best informative gardening videos I've watched.

JoeandZachSurvival OMG NICE!!! I am hoping to do purple potatoes (although I think its too late in the season to start them now). It would be useful if you included in your video how much time between planting and harvesting. I dont think it was clear from the video how long they were in the ground for. Here's to hoping my onions survived my recent squirrel attack and I have SOMETHING to harvest at the end of the season! lol

I dry my onions by hanging them on a length of chain link fencing nailed up in my fire wood shed. I just thread their leaves through each hole in the fence and fold them back. I can dry around 300 onions doing this and they all get a good flow of air around them.

Robert Colinares: At the moment, there are over 4100 views for each down vote. That's a VERY low percentage compared to lots of other videos at 0.024%. In fact, it is so low that it's a safe assumption that a good chunk of them were accidental. In a city of a half million people (# of views) how many accidently drive their cars into the curb in 4.5 years (duration to date)? I assure you, it happens more than 117 times (number of down-votes to date).

Thank you SO MUCH. I've planted many store bought onions that began to sprout and have gotten them to grow large stalks, but haven't had much luck in getting them to go to bulbs. Last year was the first time I harvested some small red onions and will replant the ones that resprouted. My other onions have given to flower, to seed and new shoots but I've watched many videos saying that from seed it takes up to 2 years to actually get a bulb, so I just leave them in the grow, use the green tops as needed, but I sure would love to have some bulbs. I have mine in smart lots and don't see the bulb above ground, only when I dig about half inch I see the bulbs, so maybe I just need to keep at it and hopefully once these stalks fall over l'll get a harvest. I'm going to cry with joy because it's been a long journey with mine.

Thank You for this video. I had planted onions one year and really did not have a clue on when to tell they were ready to be picked. And would not have known to dry them out. Just happened by luck I did pick some and now I see it was at the right time. Once I picked them I really did not need them for a while so guess by luck I did it right. But now that I really know the steps to take I will be doing it the right way next time. BTW really like your Garage set up that you used to store the onions on and the way you did your walls. You mentioned a dehydrator what one do you use. Been really thinking of getting one.

Tom Wannamaker Here in Minnesota it is almost time to plant my onions again for this year. I hope you all have good luck growing yours. Onions are a coool weather plant so get them in early. The dehydrator I have Deana is an Excalibur but any dehydrator will work including the hot summer sun. Make sure whatever you use you put it outside when doing onions because everyone in the house will be "crying " if you dont lol. Thank you. Joe

Wonderful onions! I planted onions for the first time this year and it was a big failure. I will try again next year. I read a book and it suggested to grow a variety that will grow better in my area (zone 4a). It said that Stuttgarter sets will also do better and it will serve well as a storage onion. Great video!

Living here in Minnesota like you do, its nice to see gardening videos about my area. It gets frustrating when you watch a video from someone from somewhere else in the country and try and do what they are doing and your garden turn to Crap! (which mine did last year, but it was my first year also). I also like how well you explain all the steps that go into each thing your trying to raise. Your video is wonderfully simple and full of the exact details that I have been looking for . I have my bag of onion sets and am excited to try again this year to grow one of my favorite vegetables. I had previously been told that pantyhose are great for use in the storage of onions. (Put one in, tie a knot, put another one in, tie another knot, and so on, then just hang them on a hook from a rafter in the basement). What do you think of this idea?

Very informative. Thanks for your time and efforts in posting the video. I noticed you don't top trim your onions. Have you in the past, and if so did you find it to help any? I do trim back the tops myself. I really don't notice that it helps in increasing bulb size, as some claim. The main reason I do it is it seems to help keep the tops from breaking over at the bulb when a hail storm comes over (70 miles east of Lubbock, Tx). I'm sure you experience many of the same storms shortly after we do. Just curious as to your experiences w/trimming. Again, good video. Much obliged.
