I just want to say THANK YOU for such a great video! I get frustrated with some gardening videos because people don't take the time to film the whole process, they just film the beginning and talk about the rest. This is literally one of the best informative gardening videos I've watched.

JoeandZachSurvival OMG NICE!!! I am hoping to do purple potatoes (although I think its too late in the season to start them now). It would be useful if you included in your video how much time between planting and harvesting. I dont think it was clear from the video how long they were in the ground for. Here's to hoping my onions survived my recent squirrel attack and I have SOMETHING to harvest at the end of the season! lol

Hi, when do I stop watering them? Do I stop watering them for the two weeks before I pull them out?
I dry my onions by hanging them on a length of chain link fencing nailed up in my fire wood shed. I just thread their leaves through each hole in the fence and fold them back. I can dry around 300 onions doing this and they all get a good flow of air around them.

This is my first year that I'm planting onions, your video gave me all the information I needed to plant and harvest them. Thanks!
Great presentation, you are clear, concise and get to the point -- good teacher. Thanks very much, I had no idea what to do with the onions I planted and this video has it all in one. Very useful, thank you for taking the time.

Robert Colinares I think some ppl just can't stand to watch anything longer than a 2 - 3 min video without thinking someone is dragginggg onnn... personally I enjoyed it, but I think that is why he has so many thumbs down on this one. 😉

Robert Colinares: At the moment, there are over 4100 views for each down vote. That's a VERY low percentage compared to lots of other videos at 0.024%. In fact, it is so low that it's a safe assumption that a good chunk of them were accidental. In a city of a half million people (# of views) how many accidently drive their cars into the curb in 4.5 years (duration to date)? I assure you, it happens more than 117 times (number of down-votes to date).

Thanks so much! Planted onions for the first time this year and had no idea when they were ready to harvest and knew nothing about storage. This video was a great help!
Definitely one of the best gardening videos i have seen!
Please more of these videos! They’re extremely helpful!
Thank you! This is my first year growing onions instead of scallions, and this is the best video I've come across.

You answered every question I had about growing onions. Thanks!
Thank you SO MUCH. I've planted many store bought onions that began to sprout and have gotten them to grow large stalks, but haven't had much luck in getting them to go to bulbs. Last year was the first time I harvested some small red onions and will replant the ones that resprouted. My other onions have given to flower, to seed and new shoots but I've watched many videos saying that from seed it takes up to 2 years to actually get a bulb, so I just leave them in the grow, use the green tops as needed, but I sure would love to have some bulbs. I have mine in smart lots and don't see the bulb above ground, only when I dig about half inch I see the bulbs, so maybe I just need to keep at it and hopefully once these stalks fall over l'll get a harvest. I'm going to cry with joy because it's been a long journey with mine.
Hi, thank you for a very informative video. Right now I'm drying my garlic and onions. I was not sure about the drying time. I had them in the patio on full sun. Now I know better, thanks. Blessings Laura M
Thank you so much !!! I can now teach my kids how to grow and store Onions. Have a Blessed day...

When did you plant your sets?
Great helped me alot my first year growing enough to harvest and my soil was rich and they are doing great like yours in the video. We didnt know the tops were supposed to fall, we thought animals were pushing them over. That knowledge alone is so helpful. Thank you for sharing!

Boil the tops for just a little while and then let it sit overnight and the water will turn dark and it's the best fertilizer
Thanks for this video - I'll keep watching my onions through each process.
Great video! Thanks for the info!
i just harvested them 2 mins ago! thank you for helping!
Thank you! I'm growing onions for the first time this year😊
Your video told me exactly what I needed to know. First time growing my own onions and needed the help. I had no idea when to harvest them lol Thank you for taking so much time to make a great video.
Thank you so much for going through the whole process. It's my first time growing onions and I had no idea when to pull them, ect. Very helpful.
Thanks much. We've got a nice crop going right now, but I didn't know what to do next and you've answered every question I had.

Thank You for this video. I had planted onions one year and really did not have a clue on when to tell they were ready to be picked. And would not have known to dry them out. Just happened by luck I did pick some and now I see it was at the right time. Once I picked them I really did not need them for a while so guess by luck I did it right. But now that I really know the steps to take I will be doing it the right way next time. BTW really like your Garage set up that you used to store the onions on and the way you did your walls. You mentioned a dehydrator what one do you use. Been really thinking of getting one.

Tom Wannamaker Here in Minnesota it is almost time to plant my onions again for this year. I hope you all have good luck growing yours. Onions are a coool weather plant so get them in early. The dehydrator I have Deana is an Excalibur but any dehydrator will work including the hot summer sun. Make sure whatever you use you put it outside when doing onions because everyone in the house will be "crying " if you dont lol. Thank you. Joe
Wonderful onions! I planted onions for the first time this year and it was a big failure. I will try again next year. I read a book and it suggested to grow a variety that will grow better in my area (zone 4a). It said that Stuttgarter sets will also do better and it will serve well as a storage onion. Great video!
They are BEAUTIFUL!!! OMG I just cannot wait until its time to plant this year 2019. We recently moved so I haven't been able to have a garden for the last 2 seasons. This year is gunna be AWSOME!!!
Vườn rau nhà anh tuyệt vời quá.
I planted some onion sets like 4 years ago. They are not in the ground ,I put them in planters. They didn't do well at all. I'm not a farmer in no means. Now I have better idea so will attempt it again. You're awesome. Got to be more attentive this time.
Thank you so much. This is my 1st year growing onions.
I love you guys! Thank you for your continued contribution to humanity & nature lovers everywhere. God bless you & yours abundantly!
Thank you so much for this free and valuable onion planting lesson.
Thank you so much I am a virgin onion grower you have help me with my cherrie. Nice work.
best video I've found so far on all about onions. Fabulous. Thanks
Great video. I appreciate the time you put into this video to explain the life cycle of an onion. I’m trying to grow onions from a sprouted onion so you have helped a lot. Thank you!
Great information, thanks!
Living here in Minnesota like you do, its nice to see gardening videos about my area. It gets frustrating when you watch a video from someone from somewhere else in the country and try and do what they are doing and your garden turn to Crap! (which mine did last year, but it was my first year also). I also like how well you explain all the steps that go into each thing your trying to raise. Thanks for the info and I will be giving my garden another try this year. P.S. I just hit the subscribe button! Please keep up the videos, they are very informative.
This was the first video that I find simple and very informative. Thank you it help me allot. I never grew onions before.
nice how to Joe. I'm one of those people that can't grow onions. But, I read a book on it this year and grew some from seed. The book said basically the same as you showed. I was going to push my onions over today. Thanks for sharing!
You know your onions! Thanks from Great Britain.
Beautiful stash of onions for the winter! Thank you for the video!
That was a really good video! Thanks for taking the time to put that together. Very helpful!
Thank you for your time and wisdom. I have previously tried to find information on growing and storage of onions without much luck. Your video is wonderfully simple and full of the exact details that I have been looking for . I have my bag of onion sets and am excited to try again this year to grow one of my favorite vegetables. I had previously been told that pantyhose are great for use in the storage of onions. (Put one in, tie a knot, put another one in, tie another knot, and so on, then just hang them on a hook from a rafter in the basement). What do you think of this idea?
They most informative video of come across on KZread about onions. I have some growing right now and had a lot of questions that you answered sir.
Kudos for making such an informative and very good video. I appreciate that the whole video is actually multiple videos you have taken over time, you also explain things very well, your words are very articulated, and you give tips. Thank you!

I haven't planted an abundance of onions because I wasn't sure about how to pull, process and store them. You have explained and shown me how. Thank you for doing this video. It was the most informative I have seen on the subject. Now I can plant onions with confidence. Take care.

So VERY helpful. Thanks for sharing! Beginning gardener here and videos like yours are invaluable! Side note; you're one of the few people who mentions the possibility there may be other weather conditions in the world! I live in Southern AZ. We get VERY hot in summer and don't have much of a winter. So different growing cycles here. It can make growing certain things confusing/difficult at times. Nice to know our onions seem to be on track & looking fine so far.

+Laura Mather Thank you so much for the nice comment. I am doing a season long video like this on the life cycle of a potato that I will post this fall after harvest. My girlfriend Melissa lives in Louisiana and I spend my winters down there with her and its a very different growing season compared to here in Minnesota. Its fun to learn the different ways things have to be done. Thank you Laura. Joe
Thank you for such a clear and informative video. I really appreciated your showing the onions in the ground as the bulbs formed. I have found it difficult to decide when to harvest. Now, I have a much better idea.
Hi Joe, I'm from South East Kentucky, the way we do our onions is we take a bunch and tie a string around the tops, hang them up to dry. Works out very well. We have onions all year long.
Great step by step on how to harvest those onions! Keep them videos coming!
Wow this video was PACKED with new info for me!! Thank you
still eating onions from last year! Just planted 48 potatoes yesterday and will be putting in 200 onions (red, yellow, white) this weekend. :)

Nicely done my friend, very detailed and informative. Thanks for taking the time and good luck to ya!
Thanks, Joe! Curious if the seed to bulb process is the same? Finally got some pretty nice sized bulbs forming from seed (zone 5b) and have been using the early/young brown tops to get spacing. There are suggestions for spacing, just wanted reassurance about the process in general...
Great video- you are an excellent instructor and should be getting paid to teach. I am a 20-year condo-dweller who until recently has never had the opportunity for a backyard or any space/proper lighting grow a garden. Thank you for posting such great tips and tricks!

Thank you for getting right to the point, very informative and easy to understand! Great video! I really learned a lot!
Very helpful video. I'm growing onions for the first time so looking forward to benefiting from the process.
Very informative. Thanks for your time and efforts in posting the video. I noticed you don't top trim your onions. Have you in the past, and if so did you find it to help any? I do trim back the tops myself. I really don't notice that it helps in increasing bulb size, as some claim. The main reason I do it is it seems to help keep the tops from breaking over at the bulb when a hail storm comes over (70 miles east of Lubbock, Tx). I'm sure you experience many of the same storms shortly after we do. Just curious as to your experiences w/trimming. Again, good video. Much obliged.
Great video... First year with onions and your video helped, thanks
