For the garlic scapes. If you have too many and don't know what to do with them. You can place them in water till they flower. Once they go to seed you can plant the seeds right away and in a few weeks you can harvest them as garlic chives
I like to imagine that if I am ever visited by the ghost of one of my ancient ancestors and have to explain to them the purpose of KZread, that I will show them videos of gardeners showing off their bountiful vegetable hauls. At which my ancestor will nod knowingly - perfectly understanding that this is why humans invented the moving picture machine.

I just finished using the last of my stored onions a couple weeks ago. I was thrilled with how well they kept. Growing even more this year.
Jacques you need to try garlic scapes kimchi. They’re sold as “garlic stems” in the Korean market

First year attempting onions....thanks for the helpful tips!
Thanks for the great idea for drying onions. I have a small greenhouse that has larger holes on the shelves and when I saw you turn yours upside down and put the stems through the grates, I knew mine would be drying that way this year. Absolutely perfect!! I also put my garlic in there as well.
Super timely video. Really helps with knowing when to harvest which I've started. Seems I did it mostly right. We shall see!
Love that drying table! I really enjoy that you are a DIY'er a lot of the time. You've given me confidence to try and do the same. ❤

I harvested all of the scapes from half my garlic. SO. delicious. I dehydrated some and I am very excited to grind it up and see how it works as a lighter garlic powder.
Very informative! Can’t wait to watch you harvest your garlic. Love your channel!

Hi Jacques! What do you do when it rains while the onions are curing outside? Do you let them get wet from the rain or do you cover them? What if I’m at work & we have a thunderstorm & I can’t cover them? Will I ruin my onion curing crop? I live in Northern NJ. Please send me some kind of tip. Much appreciate it! ❤ your channel! 😀

Hmm, maybe they were the wrong daylength variety for your region?
Last years onion harvest was a bust. This year, I have a few big onions. So things are getting better but I haven’t yet find the sweet spot in my yard where they will be happy.
@misstweetypie1
Ай бұрын
If you haven’t yet, check your onion sun hours. It’s how much sun they need per day to bulb. I didn’t realize it was necessary, and I definitely put them in the wrong spot, lol.
I really need you guies to drop some lime green 6-cells !! 💚
Questions: 1. If i planted onions in early march, why aren't mine bulbing yet? Lots of green onions to cut, but no bulb. Do you have a video for this? 2. His do you make them last for months instead of jusr a couple weeks. I store in a basket and feel i lose store bought ones quickly. 3. Do you have build plans for the cure table?! I love it!!! ...nay gave forgotten one. That's all for now... Unrelated, do you know how to make onion or garluc powder?
Would braiding the onions together like we did for garlic be fine? Or maybe too heavy for a braid?
No luck growing onions like that in Portland, Oregon for me, Spring onions no problems but no dice with red onions or yellow onions, but I’ll keep the faith and keep trying

I had zero germination with onions from seed, so I resorted to onion sets
do you need to protect from rain?
what variety of sunflower was that behind you?
So this is the first year - in my many failed attempts to grow onions - that my sprouts look somewhat promising. I think they still have about another month of growing, (previously zone 5b, now 6a). All the videos show perfectly formed onion bulbs above the soil. Did you need to spoon them or did they grow that way? Mine are all still green and not showing any signs of bulbs.
What do you do if it's going to rain before the onions are done curing? I'm curing my onions now (for the first time) and it's been raining almost every day so I've had them in the house but taking them outside on sunny days. Will this work? I'm in N. MS, zone 8.
When I look at my onions compared to yours, I feel flopped on the inside, too😂 . Mine are so small still!

How do you store them inside?
If you cure outside, are you covering or moving them if it rains?
I thought I heard that onions flower in the second year. How do they shed the first year above ground growth to send up a flower?
We have 2 weeks of what would MAYBE be considered winter. Our hardnecks only produced two scapes. I left them on to grow bubils and true seeds. Still had great sized cloves. Everyone should experiment to see what they get.

WERE DO YOU STORE THEM INSIDE
I was somewhere around a month late transplanting my onions into the ground, do I have much a hope in getting a decent harvest? Or what could I do to help them out? Luckily I planted a lot of them, and some seem to be growing really quickly, but others have barely grown in the couple weeks since I put them in the ground and don’t look like much more than blades of grass
@jacquesinthegarden
Ай бұрын
It is hard to say for sure but we have seen them grow year round with any issue. You can fertilize if the bulbs are small but once they really start forming it is best to cut fertilizer.
Is there any specific way that you store your onions once they come inside?

Will you protect the curing onions from dew or rain? If so, how? Thanks!

It was for sure both of the above for those plants. I am ok with eating them as spring onions and moving on, only about 6-10 onions were like that anyway.
Hey maybe this is a silly question, but can they be stored in place? Let them just stay in the ground until you’re ready to cook them?
