The martial art that inspired Earth Bending

Tony Jaa is one kickass earthbender and Hung Gar is goddamn raw in terms of combat.

What I saw was ancient Chinese Kung Fu in the form of Crane (my personal favorite), Eagles' Claw, Tiger, maybe some Mantis in there. To execute these alone is a feat in itself, but to fight with them and carry them out perfectly as was done here is absolutely astounding. Tony Jaa does more than people think, what a great martial artist that remembers the old ways too.

Crane and Tiger are both from Hung Gar Kung Fu there was no Eagle's claw, a bit of mantis and also Muay Thai but its mostly Tiger and Crane Kung fu or Hung Gar Kung fu

As a traditional kungfu practitioner, I’m willing to share some information to everyone who likes kungfu. No matter what kind of kungfu in Canton and Fujian, like Hung Gar, Choy Li Fut, Wing Chun etc, all of them are related to Southern Shaolin Kungfu

Like seeing earthbender battle but without the bending

Hung gar is power,but if you mixed it with washu shaolin style,it will be the best style ever!.

Even though the fight scenes are choreographed. I must say Hung Ga does show its strengths and how this oldworld art can be used in todays real world combat defenses and how it truly does ha e its validity too it. AWESOME WORK!!!!

I love Jaa's approximation of the Crane especially, it's really powerful. The reinterpretation of Drunken Fist combined with Muay Thai techniques is awesome, the reverse elbow @01:57 is just savage.

if there was any thai fighting in there it would have been only 1-2% 99 % of that was hung kuen gong fu that was awsom demonstration their of the danger of hung kuen wow it was cool

Lot of people say Hung Gar has no power but if you examine the sheer size of a Hung Gar expert you should know that he has "more than enough power" to break you.

Right. Also, when you examine the various Hung fist masters, you'll notice that most of them live very long and fruitful lives. Takea look at the Lam and Chiu families for example and you can clearly see that. :)

whitehaireddevil1 It can also hold it's own against Karate and Muay Thai. However Hung Gar and Muay Boran mixed then you are considered a "Warrior God".

Jon Miller i have a gym wich teaches traditional old school pahayuth, dutch style Muay Thai (generally considered most effective muay thai) and western style boxing. I currently train there, and there is another school here teaching hop gar, wich is a style of hung gar as far as i know. They both are about 5-10 minutes from my house away. Guess i was destined to be a "Warrior God" lol.

The thing the two guys do at :30 looks like a mix between a greet, and a dance. Like they're inviting each other

Parts of this looked like a mix of Hung Gar and Muay Thai.

In the hung gar vs hung gar scene his style changed to crane at the end and then he landed in a mantis stance.

Master Lam Jo incorporated the Matnis form Bung Bo into his curriculum, but he added a Hung taste to it. Many Hung practitioners learn Mantis as part of their system.

Drew is absolutely correct. I've trained in Hung Gar Kung Fu for nearly 18 years. In our 5 Animals /5 Elements form there are couple Mantis movements (not very many, only 3) but we also have a full fledged Mantis form.

Yah same techniques are taught in that as in Hung Gar. I was forced to do a form called Ba Lo Fu Jow for a year before progressing!! A YEAR!!! Now I am damn good at it still after 19 years.

@@DG-oo8zf wrong the fu jow pai system came from the hung ga system hung ga was created by the southern shaolin fighter hong xi guan known for his tiger fist hung ga influenced many southern styles

You guys realize that Earthbending is based on different styles of kung fu, bit the practitioners of the bending, aren't using the kung fu, right? The producers used kung fu as a basis, but in-universe, it doesn't exist. Besides, most of the techniques used in the Avatar are from forms, and not the combat applications.

The first battle was more showy and had more wasted movements... I'm guessing that was more of a spar and practice than actual combat?? The 2nd and 3rd battles were more actual combat... a little bit showy still (probably for movie purposes), but it was more like real combat with the martial art...

Come on folks, this is a movie with a script. If the script says Tony Jaa wins... ... he wins.

Zakat Almosen There are similarities in Choy Lee Fut and Hung Gar but there is no CLF in this movie. The Hung Gar is pretty good.

Stop talking about Avatar. Co show but still, the Earthbending shown had only skimmed the surface of Hung Gar. We're supposed to be here to see Hung Gar, not Earthbending. Earthbending happens to use Hung Gar forms, but that was for artistic design by the producers. There is no actual relation in-universe.
