Lots of people asking me to try force desktop mode on the OnePlus. Word of advice, take a screenshot of your layout first because you're probably going to get wiped doing that lol. It also doesn't really work well.. There might be a third party app called taskbar that *might* help, but I've not tested it yet.

I just tested this taskbar plus touchpad for LG makes this work. Remember to check desktop mode input fix or your apps will be small

Desktop mode is fantastic on my OPO. I've got a NexDock, and while the mirroring worked, not being able to expand apps to full screen was disappointing. Desktop mode fills the entire screen. The only glitch is the app launcher itself which is tiny and squished (basically have to type to get to apps), but the apps themselves otherwise work perfectly. Even touch works accurately and well (was having the same inaccurate touch problems before).

Thank you for posting this video, I have the Galaxy fold 4 and I use dex a lot but I've also been interested in the One Plus Open. You just convinced me to hold on to the Fold just a little bit longer.

What a great video! Under 10 minutes. Demoed all the pertinent info and was comprehensive, oh and under 10 minutes. Every video should be like this.

Hey Shane, I have the OnePlus Open and I've been trying to use the phone with my XReal glasses. The glasses worked amazingly well with Dex and my fold 4, but I have yet to find something that allows me to use my phone as a touchpad for the second screen. Samsung has this build into dex, but I can't find an app or anything that'll let me use the phone as a touchpad for a second screen (not for another desktop, as every other app I've found does. Do you know anything that does this?

Hi Shane, do u have a workaround how to play two videos together without one being paused? I can use sound aisstance on fold but it's exclusive samsung app. Also, do u have samiliar routine alternative like Samsung fold? Love the oneplus open, it's dope.

Hi Shane, I've been following your advice since before I bought my Microsoft Duo. I use it for work but now reluctantly it's time to retire it. Too many glitches. I have set my sights on the OnePlus Open. However, I searched but no-one seems to have done a video about how the Open handles Microsoft office. It is meant mainly for multitasking after all, right? And Bluetooth mouse works exactly as expected. You get a little dot as a cursor. My scroll wheel wasn't always the most consistent, but it works just fine.

@@scaryifliteral thanks! My own usecase is a monitor connected to a USB C dock so for me at least that's a potential productivity workaround pending a fix for this.

Touch targets miss on my S22+ only in screen mirror mode on my portable touchscreen. When it Dex mode touch targets are fine. This wasn't always the case when I bought my S22+ a couple of months after release. I believe it is a android system thing. Android 12 it was fine, 13 not so much. Hopefully android 14 will fix this issue. I bet if you turn off Dex and let your Fold run in screen mirror mode you will have the same issue as with your OnePlus Open.

Shane, I think it would be cool if you released a video in 4:3 aspect ratio so we can all enjoy it fullscrean on our unfolded phones

What's the smallest touchscreen monitor have you found so far? Looking for my Samsung phone. I haven't found one I like. I want something small.

Hi Shane. Did u ever get windows to detect the new ​OnePlus open fir usb file ​transfer. ​I've tried everything and just can't get it to read the phone. It detects the phone but mostly won't open the OnePlus folder in explorer. Someone it does open the folder but takes forever then only shows 2 or 3 shared folders. But soon as you try to copy anything it says device unavailable.

You probably have to enable the USB mode for File Transfer on the phone after you connect to your PC. Should be a notification that mentions USB mode or charging mode and you should be able to click on it to change it to File Transfer.

I hope you could test Xiaomi’s Mix Fold 3 as well.

Can I use the Oneplus Open as a second screen to my MacBook? I would like to use a magsafe laptop mount and connect the oneplus open to my macbook.

Good video, Shane. I must say yet again, the DUO 2 is by far the best device when it comes to multi-tasking. When DUO 3 is released with that single folding screen I hope Microsoft have that phone function the exact same as the DUO 2 goes as far opening an app and it'll be on one side of the screen. The Microsoft integration with an SD3 could be amazing for Productivity, and security, and if they could get a partnership with a camera brand like Hasselblad or some other camera company, it could be the best device ever. Imagine if we could have Microsoft Active Directory support, Windows 11 integration, and Remote Desktop Protocol support. It could be the ULTIMATE productivity device where you could leave your laptop at home and remote into your laptop from abroad and have Bluetooth mouse and keyboard support. That would be INCREDIBLE. Sigh, if only Microsoft could put their full weight into designing and building such a device...

Maybe it's time for any of BBK Electronics conglomorate to develop their own custom flavour of Android Desktop Mode. I'm still not a fan of Samsung Z Fold's inner screen crease despite the current fifth generation model can finally fold flat, but it's still really hard to go wrong with Samsung DeX.

Is the OnePlus Open capable of outputting 4k 60hz or is it limited to 4k 30hz? I currently own a OnePlus 7 Pro and have attempted to use USB C to HDMI on it, but from my understanding it's limited to 4k 30hz or 1080p 60hz.

There is a "Force Desktop Mode" on secondary displays in developer options. You can turn that off or on.

@@scaryifliteral apparently its pretty broken in android 13 but this guy kzread.info/dash/bejne/hXx92bWSj6enhc4.html and ETA Prime found a fix for it. there is a bit of a set up process but looks fun to play around with.

Idea regarding the touch targets, is it that the touch area is "streatched" to fit the external display? Eg. 4:01 your finger is over the KZread Music icon, but the calendar opens; I took a screenshot of the video, stretched the image to fit the external display then your finger was on the calendar icon. Maybe a drawing app would help show that the issue is?

Yeah, it's something like that. If you enable the force desktop mode setting and developer options, the touch targets are correct. That mode is also almost completely unusable though lol

does it have miracast?

Would like to see if mouse and keyboard work being that must people would be using a regular TV for video out But Dex is King regardless

Oneplus needs to do this on there Oneplus 11 damn it.

I think I need to try out my Surface Duo 2 with my NextDock and see if it works as I would expect. I wonder now if the touchpad and keyboard might work. Has me very curious to try it when I get home. If it works, I'll come back here and let everyone know. If this works as I hope, this option/combo might replace my Chromebook. EDIT: It works, haven't gotten the chance to play around with it as much as I would like(moving into my new apartment). Turned out that for it to work like Shane shows here, you have to disable "force desktop mode" in developer options.

Edit: For some reason it doesn't seem to work just through USB C. It does appear to work with a USB C dongle though with HDMI out to the display and then plugged into the USB port of the NexDock.

Thanks for the video, almost wanted to get the Oneplus fold until i saw these. Regardless...Samsung Fold is still way much better with these main features like DEX, Secure Folder, default stylus support and you have the outter screen setup differently on the inner screen. That the strong points and keep Samsung Fold at the top of all Folding devices 😊

The OnePlus Open has Stylus support, you'll just have to try and get your hands on the elusive Chinese-only Oppo Pen 2. As for DEX, yeah that's a bummer that OPO doesn't have a proper desktop mode. As for the Secure folder, there are dozens of free apps in the Google PlayStore that can serve that functionality.

I think I had the same monitor as you but without the branding. It died on me and i went for a different make. My ROGphone also had the same behavior as the OPO for both monitors. So definitely it's an Android fault, not a Oneplus fault.

It's the same but Samsung dex and Motorola ready for do it correctly like a desktop hopefully Google and OnePlus implement something similar .

Oddly enough, as much as I wanted the OP (let's be honest, for the wider outer screen), the more reviews I watch on it, the more I love my Fold... With that said, come on, Samsung, make some slight changes to the outer screen size...

The desktop mode you enable this way is extremely broken. There's an app that might "fix" it, video maybe later.

damn, what a shame google. At least OnePlus have excuse of the product still new and patch is incoming.

..... And that's why the OnePlus went back. Everywhere I turned there was just strange software oddities. Nothing that was happening was total failure but there was just.... Consistent oddities. I was literally sitting here saying to myself before you got out the OnePlus saying "watch this do some weird shit" and sure enough. I do like the Pixel for the charm within the software but as it stands now Samsung is so far ahead as far as a PRODUCTIVITY tool it's insane. If you want to get serious work done I think they're the only choice right now.

So far, this is really the only weird thing I've come across and it's not something that really impacts me at all. I'd say Open Canvas is a pretty big step up over what Samsung is doing tbh. That's an everyday impact for me.

@@scaryifliteral I hear ya. Other things were happening too. I have an app pair that opens an application with the camera app and OnePlus said (for the camera) "ThiS aPp iS noT compatible wiTh SpliT sCreEN." WHY NOT I also had an app pair to do my VPN and my Google authenticator so I didn't have to go between the apps to get the code. Sure enough my VPN app wouldn't resize properly so I couldn't save the pair to begin with. It's all about the apps you use and the things you're trying to get done. But I think there's more to it than just open canvas. I also really like the built-in ability to take a picture of something with text and then go into the gallery and long press to pull out the text. Among other things. I did have issues that I eventually found workarounds for, but you get to a point where you don't want to have to do a workaround for everything that was just native on Samsung. I also don't want to run setedit after every reboot to get 120 Hertz apps. OnePlus is coming but they're only about 80% there. And having a foldable with no US-based repair centers is a non-starter for many.
