OnePlus Open Review: One Month Later!

Ғылым және технология

Still a novelty in the tech scene, foldable phones are as sexy and cutting edge as they are expensive. And as fun as they are to use, they still come with so many compromises. Enter, the OnePlus Open. This is our review.

    i have had the Open for about 2 weeks ago. Been a Galaxy Z fold user since the 2nd gen, and have tried the pixel fold twice. By far (except samsung does have a slight edge on software implementation, especially when it comes to using multiple apps; the Open is 1A, tho) this is the best presentation of a foldable fold in the US. The only complaint is Samsung's hinge, particularly when it comes to holding different angle, has this thing beat. If you tilt the Open much more back than 90 degrees it will pop flat, while the current Fold Z 5 will hold any angle; a big plus if you like taking pictures. Beyond those 2 caveats, especially when it comes to the camera, Open wins. BTW, fantastic review. I just subscribed.

    Samsung needs to adopt the same ratio . I just really hate the ZFold's narrow outer screen. If they can make this the same as the OnePlus Open or the S23 Ultra outerscreen, then I'm all up to changing to a foldable phone.

    I have a Fold 3 I bought on Swappa in mint condition for $525. I've had it nearly a year and really like it. When the Open makes it to Swappa, I'll probably upgrade primarily for the cover screen. I bought a stylus but rarely use it as it's a pain to carry and only works with the main screen.

    Loved this review. I've been with Apple for quite a few years now. Hubby has had the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 and now 5. I'm using the Apple 13 Pro Max. I was going to upgrade to the new 15 Pro Max, but started messing with the Flip, and found it "fun". I looked at several videos of the Galaxy Fold 5, but really wasn't impressed, then came upon your video. I'm with AT&T, and have already researched and found I can trade in my iPhone 13 Pro Max for the OnePlus! Hopefully, I can acclimate myself back into the android world. Thanks again for a great review!

    Hi Michael. Great video as usual. Thanks for the details on the review. 1+ certainly impressed me. The hardware and software of the Open are great. Nice to see the addition of the taskbar/dock when you open the phone. I don't think their software is at Samsung's level yet but it would get better. I think Samsung took too long, I couldn't believe my eyes when they released the Fold 5 with no improvement. Well done 1+. Even though I am a Samsung fan, I am definitely going to get this phone.

    why all these 1 month review... 3 weeks review .... ended up being repeating materials and never really any real world use experience. You mentioned the charging speeds written on the specs, what about your REAL world test ? How did the charging perform ? u mentioned IPX4 which I can also read in its datasheet but have you tested anything at all ie (real world test) ? Oneplus already showed demo on the drag and drop feature into email. But did you test anything else ? does it work on whatsapp? does it work on other chat platforms ? which one did you test ? Why does it have a thicc black bar on the bottom during multi windows view around 12:07 ? how does the black bar compared to other folding phones when watching youtube or other media consumption ? does the larger screen real estate helps in media consumption or the 1:1 aspect ratio gives thicc black bars which eventually reduce youtube frame size compared to samsung ? We need info bro Michael. Not things that we already know. Please give us REAL 1 month review.

    I'm on the same boat, imo the current wireless charging method reminds me of the super early days of "wireless earbuds" where a cable still connects left and right buds, "wireless" in a sense but not terribly exciting. The true wireless charging might never be a reality but I'm fine with cables.

  • @DVinstapics

    Same, I havw wireless charging but I never use it, you still have to leave the phone where the "wireless" charger is connected by cable to the power outlet and then you can't pick it up while it's charging and it also charges way slower. Why is everyone making such a big deal about wireless charging???

  • @arvandvarahram
    @arvandvarahram8 ай бұрын

    Regarding the aspect ratio: I don't want to be offensive, but as long as you don't use a Foldable as your daily-driver and you don't stop looking at it from a slab-phone user's perspective, you will fail to see the reason for Z Fold's aspect ratio. The only manufacturer who nailed the aspect ratio is so far only Samsung. The book-style Foldables are for people who want a tablet which can become pocketable. The Z Fold is indeed the most pocketable book-style Foldable. Having an aspect ratio and size of a standard slab phone contradicts the pocketability. Whoever ends in using the cover screen most of the time, won’t need a book-style Foldable. Such a person is better off with a Flip: a slab phone which becomes pocketable. The main screen (inner-screen) is the most important one. That squarish main screen of 1+ Open neither looks nor feels like a tablet. If there is no difference between the landscape and portrait mode, the entire multi-tasking experience is not that optimal. Whenever I use my Z Fold5 one-handed, I use it in portrait mode because it is easier to hold. In case of 1+ Open and Z Fold in landscape mode, you’ll get quickly tired because the balance is different. I like the Open Canvas concept of 1+ Open, but there is much more to multi-tasking than this. I would have to write pages … Regarding the Pen: 1+ Open did not even mention the Pen support. Can you imagine why not to mention it while their main competitor has Pen support? Not every Pen works well. And just because a pen can be used it does not mean it is useful. And the S Pen works perfect and the tons of specially tailored features are also relevant. Another aspect that is extremely relevant is the Flex mode. 1+ Open supports more or less just the Camera App and KZread in this mode. But the Flex Mode supported in Z Fold is on another level, also with 3rd party software support it. And you can use it with literally with every app. There are so many other relevant aspects where You can see why the Z Fold is so mature. I think the reviewers should either compare the devices thoroughly and not selective (e.g., in case of camera just a few pictures in certain light condition, and leaving out the video part completely), or they should just tell what is good in the device in Focus without mentioning the competition only in aspects where the device in focus might have some advantages.

    Correction, manufacturers have not struggled to make foldable with the proper aspect ratio and decent weight. Many manufacturers have done this for over a year now, but they were not released them outside of China. I am typing this on the Huawei mate X3, which I have had for 6 or 7 months, and is better than the oppo find open in pretty much all respects except for price and the fact that it does not have 5g (since the huawei has re released a 5g version called the Mate x5)

    Vivo x fold2, honor magic v2, xiaomi mix fold3, phantom...etc off the top of my head other than the Huawei and the 3 mentioned in the vid. (oppo find n3) On your point of proper aspect ratio and decent weight, the honor magic v2 somehow jams a 5000mAh in there as the lightest and thinest of any foldables. Insane. I highy recommend checking these out before you buy as there are choices out there. Tho I've ordered the oppo find n3 1tb myself as a Samsung ultra/iPhone guy for years now. Im gonna miss the bluetooth pen productivity functions.

Don't get me wrong, it's a good phone, it's software is just not as polished. Also not having a separate closed and open set ups makes a difference and not being able to stack widgets. I've had foldables since the ZFold 1. I'm typing this on my Lenovo X1 Fold. My concern is simple: foldable displays are simply more prone to failure as are the complex hinges. On OnePlus reddit subs, people actually complain about two - three month turn times for repairs. Until they have a better service network in the states, that's the single largest thing holding me back.

    Best foldable HARDWARE, absolutely agree. However, the Samsung Fold series still has better software, try using 3 applications at once, and you'll see how lacking the customization is on where you can place windows. If you want to resize applications, forget it, resizing doesnt work in many cases. The OnePlus also so much wasted screen real estate when using splitscreen mode. Apps render weirdly in some cases, and in other case when you pinch out to view 3 apps at once, the windows only take up 75% of the screen making everthing smaller and hard to read and navigate. Also try putting apps in horizontal layout spit screen mode, one plus doesn't allow you to do this and will default to a portrait view first, before allowing you to flip to horizonal through the split screen options menu. This requires addition steps, when you can do this from the getgo on the Fold. When viewing 3 apps in portrait mode (pinched out) , navigation of the middle app just breaks and refuses to work. Beautiful hardware...however, software is at least 2 years behind the Fold, and it shows.

    I think not including wireless charging is just cheaping out and saying you went for fast charging instead of wireless is making excuses as you can have both. It's not one or the other, you can have both. It's an extremely expensive phone and it omitting such basic features is incredibly stupid.

    I love to buy Samsung Galaxy z fold 5 over the OnePlus open because Samsung Galaxy z series is unbeatable when it comes to fold it's same like iPhone industry the feel of Samsung Galaxy can't sense into other foldes so z fold 5 is best I love to see that narrow screen for fold 5 that's incredible beautiful we love it and android experience on Samsung Galaxy is outstanding very smooth operating system and UI for Samsung it's amazing 😍

    I really liked one+ open/oppo N3... still considering...what holds me back: 1. No water resistance 2. No wireless charging - def. a plus esp if you are at work and you do not want to unplug/replug ur phone. 3. DEX or desktop mode... WHAT if they will partner with Windows? Hahahaha

  • @rhythm451

    @rhythm451

    7 ай бұрын

    TBF although it's not water resistant the other competition isn't completely waterproof either...they can only be under 1m of water for about 30min and non of the big three companies cover water damage on warranty. The open can still be dropped in water and taken back out in a timely manner. 2. I've used phones with wireless charging and phones without...and find using the wire more efficient as it's still the fastest way to charge the device and from what the open states these things charge extremely fast and have very efficient battery life. The only thing I could kinda agree on with you is the Dex...but future implementations could be adopted and if not it's not much of a deal breaker.... according to multiple readings/reviews this Open is the best foldable on the market bar non and is pretty much the best foldable money can buy.

    Had one of these, screen died within 24 hours of little to zero use. Thankfully the support was great and they were very accommodating. I couldn't mess around with replacements on a design fault this big with a phone this expensive, so went for a refund. This is the nature of early adopters I suppose.

    I love my OnePlus Open but really wish it had wireless charging. Wired charging (even fast charging) requires me to think about it and create 20-40 minutes i won't need ky phone when it's low. With wireless, i just drop it on the stand on my desk or the cradle in my car which keeps it topped off. And at night, it's so much easier to find and use a wireless charger in dim lighting than plugging in USB-C.
