One year into the Dream! Has it lived up to the hype?

Today marks 1 year that I threw all my money, heart and soul into this old boat with this crazy dream of running away to sea.
Seems like a good time to look back and ponder on this decision.

What you are trying to achieve takes time, Considering this is your first boat, you took on quite a task. Keep moving forward and don't let it drag you down. I am currently on the loop. I left the marina where Ed and Lynn keep their boat on March 12, 2024. I was making good time and distance until I arrive in the Solomon's MD area. When I arrived, I planned to stay two nights. Currently I am at least 5 weeks here. Boating will always present challenges that we don't foresee. Whether it is finding a teaching captain, boat issues or weather. Keep on plugging along and if you would like to colab with an upstart channel, feel free to reach out. Fair wind and following seas. CaseyG aboard M/V TIKA

@@ShaylaVie Hi Shay, What keeps me here in Maryland is the backlog of work that the boat yards and mechanics have. The first issue was a leaky prop shaft seal that took 2 1/2 weeks until they could service it. Then due to weather I wasn't able to do the shakedown for a few days. When I did, I found a vibration running between 1400-1800 rpms. Now it has been 2 weeks since I discover it. So just waiting for mechanics is the issue. The place is pretty with some great sunsets, but I would prefer to be catching up and traveling with my looper friends.

Shay, sorry we missed your live stream, we chatted a while back we are the people from the Pacific Northwest and have a 70’ Hatteras. Just a few things: first you are doing great with your learning curve so good on ya. Next get a different captain, this guy is not a teacher, I was wondering why at slower speeds he has you using your steering wheel, nay, nay, always use your engines, one in forward and one in reverse to manoeuvre in tight spots. What over using the wheel does is when you go to use your engines for a quick manoeuvre you may have forgotten that you had the wheel hard over and the boat won’t respond the way you expect it to when you need it the most and quickly. K, back to boating, on our boat we did 3 months in the Mediterranean, 3 months in the Caribbean, through the Panama Canal and 3 months up the west coast to Vancouver Island. It was a great 9 month journey, so very doable easy Peasy. Would love to spend some of our winter down in Florida cruising with you, soooo you never know. 🤔 Keep up the good work kiddo. Talk soon.

I have enjoyed watching your journey. I am one year ahead of you this week. I bought a 1989 Hatteras Cockpit Motor Yacht two years ago. Original condition with very limited work/changes done by previous owner. That’s actually a plus. Nothing worked, no electronics functioning. Blisters on hull pretty bad. Both generators on life support. But she was my new baby and I loved her-warts and all. The 12 cylinder Detroits are solid and passed inspection and oil survey was flawless. I hired a captain (he said he hired me) and away I went. Left Galveston Texas heading to St. Louis where my daughter and her husband just moved for her medical residency. My two grandkids were the real attraction though. We made it to Lake Charles, Louisiana. We left Galveston in the morning with clear skies a great weather predicted all the way to Lake Charles. Two hours away and all hell broke out. Lightening, thunder and stinging rain on the fly bridge because the wipers in the wheel house failed and we had to go up top to see. My captain (with 35 years experience) told me it was the worst storm he’s been through. 60 knot winds and blinding down pour. He had the foresight to bring his own chart plotter and VHS radio because he didn’t know what worked and what didn’t on my boat. The only electronics that worked was a lower right corner of an old Furano screen that had the depth info (could barely be read). He radioed a tug boat captain he knew and luckily he was on the Intracoastal working and saw us on radar and got us out of the way of dozens of work boats and tugs pushing barges or dragging dredging pipes. You couldn’t see 100 feet in front of us. We made it to Lake Charles and docked at the captains home. Thirty minutes before dark. He had two 80’ slips with power and water. In one was his own 55’ pleasure boat. We put mine in the other. First day on my boat two years ago this month. I am now in my slip in Orange Beach Alabama. Just returned from wintering in Marathon in the Florida Keys. I can pilot my own boat now and know everything there is to know about my Hatteras. Two years it took. I have put on over 3,000 miles on her and we crossed the gulf in a straight shot to Pensacola from the keys. It’s been a heck of a ride. My captain and his wife (also a captain) are my best friends now and I was pretty lucky he “hired” me. Thanks for sharing your experiences on your Hatteras!!!

Just be patient, and remember that most things will take longer than expected, especially if you are dependent on others. There are people in this world that have no clue as to what is happening. There are people in this world that do not care what is happening. There are people in this world that are waiting for what will happen. Then, there are people like you, that make things happen! I'm kind of in the same boat (heh) as you. Sold my house in Ft. Myers & bought a boat for me and George (she's my cat). I've been living aboard here at a marina in Titusville doing repairs & upgrades since early September. She's a Catalina Islander 34' motor yacht. I FINALLY got things to where I could take the boat out with an experienced captain 2 weeks ago, but we had to come back after 3 hours because the shifter cable for the port transmission became very difficult to operate. It was corroded on the inside due to a leaking gear oil cooler just above the cable. I replaced the gear oil cooler back in October but didn't suspect that the cable was corroded because of it. So anyway, I'm replacing the cable today and should be good to go. Yeah, it can be a little depressing at times working on the boat and going nowhere. I'm not an experienced captain yet and not comfortable docking - I can drive & navigate in the ICW & open water no problem. Fortunately there's a guy at the marina who was glad to help me out with that and he was glad to get out on the water too. Best of luck, Shay! Love your channel - I can totally relate!

But hey thats no reason to quite, Boating is expensive, If you are financially capable of supporting this venture then don't quite. You bought an old boat, obviously a boat that needs a lot of work (and money) to bring it back to life. I don't understand why so big for your first boat but hey I do understand wanting something and I have to have it, been there. The biggest problem you have that I can see Is you have to pay for everything you need done, This is expensive especially in the boating world. Anyway I don't want to ramble on here, from watching your videos seems to me your dream is to make to the Bahamas and possibly the Caribbean. Follow it, don't quite, trust me you will regret it later in life If you do.

@@ShaylaVie There's a saying in the boat world. "The cheapest boat may very will turn out to be the most expensive." Boats are a depreciating asset. Odds are you will NEVER again see the dollars spent and as you get older will come to regret all those "thrown away" dollars. From one who spent a bunch of time on an old Hatteras 58 Yacht Fish, including running her to Bimini, Chub, and eventually Paradise Island my opinion of them is their slow, top heavy and lousy sea vessels. Great liveaboards as long as you don't often leave the dock. Opinions are like a**es, everyone has them, however mine are based on decades of boat ownership.

If everyone only ever did things they knew how to do, then no one would do anything new! I had no real experience other than being on other boats when I was young. I wasn't even sure I'd like this lifestyle. I did a lot of research on boats, figured out what I really wanted from this and then bought the boat I thought might give me that experience. I planned 1 year at the dock to get systems up to date, learn the boat inside and out, how to drive it and then take off. I wasn't 100% sure I could do this, and I'm pretty sure a lot of folks had a betting pool on if I'd stick it out (especially after that first couple of weeks!!!) But if you let fear of the unknown keep you from doing something you think you'd love to do, then you're failing yourself. Most people are far more capable than they think they are, but they never find out because they are too afraid to push their boundaries.
