Very interesting to see Live being used as a deep interactive synthesiser rather than a DAW or Looper

@@moistpeanut5986 exactly, but not many people actually use it like that. Using the entire software as a single musical voice rather than using it to organise multiple voices.

Quite a poor DAW to do that I would say. I believe that's why so many people don't submerge themselves into overtonal, microtonal, microrythmic and polyrythmic composition. There are no intuitive DAWs available for the job (to my knowledge).
A fascinating way to explore drone compositions, some precious hints in this one!
This is beautiful Maya! This reminds me of the aesthetic in Indian music theory, where the root, aka Shadja, literally means, "The root that births 6 overtones". Thus the harmonic series form the basis of the drone aesthetic, and I'm happy to see you using this in a modern, electronic context. Love from India!

I cannot love more Live and their community
I had a lot of fun trying this out. Really opens some new pathways. A simple new perspective.
I get the most jealous of the lovely spacious studios these people have! :) Cool idea though, love thinking outside the box when it's grounded with a bit of harmonic theory.
What an incredible cheat code here for composers with a penchant for ambient and ethereal vibrations. I love it. Thank you for sharing your wisdom. I can see this helping many people on their quest to find a beat. :)

beautiful
That’s brilliant.

Hi Maya...nice, u can also load scala files on a vst that support to automstically plays harmonics on your keyboard or editor....instead of writing on a paper😜😂
Quite nice
Thanks Maya 🙂 Aren’t there any Plugins to simply this workflow? I think „Fundamental“ from sonic lab can do this, or am I wrong?

Right? I'm surprised ableton of all channels put this up, they literally own max4live, you could do so much more with this same idea using that, but here she is using a pencil paper and a gazillion audio tracks.

@@brownfox1540 Everybody's creative process is different. She's not slapping on a plugin to get a quick result. She's in the moment creating more and more sounds, overtones, resonances, adding a layer each time, listening how it feels, adding accoustic instruments and so on. I think it's really cool and inspiring. I would just add saturation at the end. Off course she could use plugins or max for calculations but I think the pencil and paper allows her to be even more in the process and give you an analog feeling because your behind a computer all day. Have fun creating y'all! :)

ישראלית באבלטון!!! 😍😍
This is a kind of simplified just intonation. Consider octave reducing the overtones by dividing them by the closest smaller n to the power of two, i.e. 7/4 instead of 7/1. This would be a lot easier to do if Ableton would finally support Scala microtuning. Or it might be possible with MTS-ESP Suite already, since MPE was implemented in version 11?
Thankfully we have Max/MSP :)
one giant step into space.
Creative AF.
cool way to use ableton for spectralism without digging into maxmsp or pure data etc

I feel like there's gotta be a way to do this within a synth...
@Skijumptoes
2 жыл бұрын
Well it's the basics of synthesis, so yeah you can do it with any synth with multiple sine oscillators. But there's not many that have 16 oscillators who's levels you can control independently, hence why she's using Ableton and push to control it by hand. You need all the oscillators available to mix between them to find what works - even if you only end up with 5-6 of them playing at any one time.

Say whaa ?
I can’t believe there is a fancy looking website that just shows you the multiples of a number you type in. That is literally what the harmonics are - the nth harmonic is n times the fundamental frequency. You can use a spreadsheet if you want to get fancy.
Robots
Ableton, why not add some native microtonal capabilities? People have been begging for years.
I like how she apparently has no idea that the frequencies of the overtones are whole-number multiples of the fundamental, so she uses "this website" instead of a calculator (though one is not really necessary for the task)...
@CaptainPhilosophical
2 жыл бұрын
Or she does know this but the website performs 15 calculations with the input of 1 number making this task 15 times faster.
@palms159
2 жыл бұрын
@@CaptainPhilosophical except it's not that much faster if you have to go back to the page to copy and paste the number which you could have easily calculated in your head (by adding the same number to a sum) or just pressed another = on a pocket calculator (if you type for example 35 then + and then = you'll get 70 and after that another = you'll get 105 and basically you can get the harmonic series if you keep pressing =). in any case I think she could have mentioned that it's a simple arithmetic operation.
