@@PlainlyDifficult Just glad the dog didn't eat it. An excuse I used often as a school kid.
Just a bit of additional context on how it was possible nobody knew of the Prince until an hour after the collision: The ship's bridge and radio room were at the front, just behind the bow, and were the first to be drenched in oil and set ablaze. That's why they weren't able to shut off AC and had to send their maydays with small, hand-held emergency radios. According to some reports they might have even tried to send a first mayday from the main radio before evacuating the bridge but it was probably jammed by the tanker's owns maydays as she had a far more powerful radio. The smoke from the burning crude oil quickly formed a litteral "wall" between the coast and the burning ships, so dense and black that the raging fires, probably visible from space, were completely hidden from the harbour just some hundred meters away. That's why the burning ferry was found only an hour later by some tugboats.

Of course the cause of this accident was never officially resolved but my experience with Moby Lines was let's say very sketchy. In 2003 at the age of 16 I went to Sardegna with a group my age and some adults which had a look at us. We were on this very same route on board the Moby Magic and two weeks later went back on the Moby Fantasy, the identical sister ship of the Magic. Both ships were filthy and in terrible condition with broken outlets, wires hanging around, doors not closing or broken etc. The kicker is two weeks after we were back home the Moby Magic collided with a rock and had to be evacuated. It was scrapped after this. Three years later the Moby Fantasy collided with another ship. This happens a bit too often with them for my taste.

I don't understand why the port controllers didn't notice that the Moby Prince wasn't responding to any calls (or why the vessel didn't have a harbor pilot). Did that port not have any of that (or were no broadcasts made to account for all vessels in the area)?

This is why you want to be out on the deck when the sip leaves port: any accident, and still you'll have a living chance if you jump into the water and manage to swim back to a pier. Not a large chance, it's a tense situation and many things can go wrong, but you do stand a chance to survive. If you're inside, then yeah, it's like being trapped in a mine during a methane leak.
@samarnadra
Ай бұрын
Depends how far you have to jump into the water... hitting it from a height is like hitting concrete. Maybe if you dive properly? Still would be a preferable way to go than fire probably... so would the smoke.
I don’t know if you’ll see this Jon, but a big part of my playlist is historical disasters, in particular planes and ships, and you BY FAR are my favorite creator for these topics! I love all your videos but boy oh boy! Do I ever get a thrill when I see it’s about a ship! Keep up the amazing work Jon! We appreciate your time and what you do!❤
Bruh how do you produce an amazing video and just forget about it? You're a legend. Love the content as always.
Combination of issues... The tanker parking not at the designed place... Probably planned to faster launch later. The ferry moving off course due to another ship, which, if military, probably did deliberately things to be not well known about its presence, and turned off radar in zero sight. Low quality radio... The oil tanker hull probably not quite a double hull. So adding up, so many unsafe practices sums to the fatal catastrophe...
@Nilboggen
Ай бұрын
Biggest issue was not seeing the oil tanker and running into it. The naval academy (800 feet away) and multiple witnesses on scene before and after the accident said that it was perfect visibility no fog present. In addition a video was shown in court that showed clear and fair conditions and the Captain of the Guardia di Finanza also testified that "at the time the weather was excellent, and the sea was calm and visibility was perfect." and he was there prior to the accident and helped with rescue efforts. So I don't believe the radar being off played any roll in this accident.

I don't enjoy disasters. But I like documentaries, and a disaster situation is an excellent subject for short documentary videos - disasters unfold in a way that can be condensed into a video, and have characteristics and effects that can be shown in a logical way; and then, the investigation which will produce a report of some kind which can provide the basis for summary and conclusion elements. It's a cadence that engages me mentally, and when narrated by John and presented with his skill, results in a KZread clip I am always happy to see suggested by the algorithm and always enjoy watching.

Finally a documentary on the Moby Prince, and from the best short documentary channel on youtube.
Have you thought about covering the Scandinavian Star disaster in a future video? Its circumstances are very similar to the Moby Prince disaster: Fire on board, 159 people died, most of them due to suffocation instead of burning. However, the fire came from within the ship and was caused by deliberate arson. It was able to spread due to a terrible chain of neglect, bad luck and bad planning of the ship. And the reason why someone lighted the fire in the first place is still unknown to this day: At first, people thought that a mad arsonist caused the fire, but in more recent years, more and more evidence and speculations point towards insurance fraud, making this not only one of the biggest and most influencial maritime disasters, but also one of the biggest unresolved criminal cases.
