One Stop, Seven Species: Fishing Buckhorn Dam in Sanford, NC

Спорт

This week's adventure was a Buckhorn Dam, which is a spillway on the Cape Fear River in Sanford, NC. Buckhorn is a favorite spot for the locals. It's typically very shallow (1.5-2.5 feet deep near the spillway), but has an amazing variety of species. I decided to spend a morning trying to catch as many as I could. Here are the lures / set-ups that I used in the video:
Carp Rig:
#6 Gamakatsu octopus circle hook, snelled to a 14" piece of 20 lb fluorocarbon leader attached to a swivel. Above that, I have a small bead and a 1/4 oz egg sinker, which holds the bait in place and allows the carp to run and set the hook. For bait, I used 2-3 kernels of sweet corn that I've mixed with a small amount of imitation vanilla extract (carp crack!)
Other lures:
#6 Panther Martin Deluxe Dressed Fly Spinner (Brass Body / Blade w/ Orange Trim) - this is one of my favorite freshwater lures and I catch the majority of fish in the video on this lure: amzn.to/43pZgsG

They can get up really shallow, especially in the evening. What type / size was it?

@Kayak_Chris it was a blue. About 34" long and fat. Didn't have a scale with me, but have one now in the kayak! 😉

@@bjaminf113 It's always good to keep a scale handy, as you never know when you'll end-up with a biggun on the end of the line. I've caught a few whopper blues in the winter in the 50lb range... still trying to break the 60lb mark!

How deep do the holes get below the islands?

I’d say maybe 4-8’+. They’re kind of all over and are rocky with a lot of debris. That’s why we either fish cut bait weightless or use maybe an ounce on a fishfinder rig with live bait. You also have to be above the hole casting down river… if you fish from the bank or cast diagonally, you’re much more likely to get hung up, as the bait will usually tumble along the bottom until it gets snagged

There are a lot of people that bank fish there, but you’ll be limited in what you can catch and it’s also very shallow and snaggy. You can wade a good portion of the upper end of the river around the dam, which will help with the snagging. Ideally, you have or borrow a kayak so you can move around and fish below the islands, where deeper water is more accessible
