One smart green heron. Using bread as bait to catch fish.

What's more interesting is that the heron pulls the bait away from the fish which are too big for the heron to eat, and saves it for the smaller fish 👍

Isn't this incredible? Top marks to whoever saw this and filmed it. There are so many things to consider here about what the Green Heron is doing. The man-made concrete and metal structure it is using to get the correct height and angle at the water's edge. The harvesting of the bread from wherever it got it. Inserting bait at a distance where it can still be retrieved. Not losing its bait to fish which are too big to catch. The size of prey it can effectively deal with. This clever bird has found a real niche.

The level of calculation here is amazing. I tried a similar experiment some years ago based on a hypothetical bush survival scenario. I settled at the edge of a marshy area where there were frogs that darted away at my approach. I broke off tiny twigs and started tossing them in the water at an arms' reach distance. It's the tiny ripple when it lands on the surface that triggers their impulse to investigate. It didn't take me long to nab a couple of big juicy bullfrogs that a starving person would find some way to consume. That success felt like useful bushcraft knowledge. But this little feathered fisherman is next level - you can't even see the little minnow he was hunting until it was in his beak!

Go to a shallow portion of the river that still gets decent sized fish. Join your hands forming a rough circle with your arms. Wait. Fish will eventually get used to your presence, as long as you don't move much. When one swims over your hands, heave up and to the shore. I have legitimately caught fish and one time an eel this way. It works, if you're hungry enough to have patience. Lol No gear or bread required. 😉

how amazing, but please I have a question: who taught the heron to catch fish with this technique??!! and who taught him to remove the bait from fish that are too big to eat???!!!! it is the only one who has this power: it is god the almighty, the creator who has created everything and designed it in a perfect measure god said in the holly quran: He (God) is the One Who perfected everything He created, and started the creation of the human from clay.” (Qur’an 32:7) Six major names and attributes of God as the Creator are stated in the Qur’an. Each of which provides a different aspect and insight into the divine power of creation and the composite process of creation, making it clear that every detail of creation was “When He decrees a matter, He only says to it: “Be! - and it is.” (Qur’an 2:117) God is the only One Who has the power of true creation out of nothing. When He wants something to exist, He simply says, "Be!" and it becomes immediately just as He wants it to be, without the need for causes and means. Six major names and attributes of God as the Creator are stated in the Qur’an. Each of which provides a different aspect and insight into the divine power of creation and the composite process of creation, making it clear that every detail of creation was perfectly planned and performed directly by God, leaving nothing to chance or to someone or something else. These six divine names and attributes are: 1-Al-Mubdi’ (the Beginner) - The One Who initially and originally creates out of nothing, just by His Will - with a single command: “Be!” - without the use of pre-existing matter. 2-Al-Khaliq (the Creator, the Planner) - The One Who determines and creates according to proper and accurate measures and proportions. God says, “He has created everything and designed it in a perfect measure.” (Qur’an 25:2) 3-Al-Bari’ (the Originator, the Inventor) - The One Who originates and materializes creation without a prior model. 4- Al-Musawwir (the Fashioner, the Shaper, the Designer) - The One Who fashions, Who gives everything its distinctive form and shape according to its assigned purpose. 5-Al-Fatir (the Bringer into existence) - The Creator of the universe and everything in it, giving every living thing its particular character, objective, and meaning. 6-Al-Badi` (The Incomparable, the Originator) - The One Who creates things out of nothing without the help of an instrument, or matter, or time, or place. He creates all His creatures bursting with variety and uniqueness, so one creature is not perfectly similar to another. This infinite variety in God’s creation is a physical manifestation of God's absolute creative power. “He (God) is the One Who perfected everything He created, and started the creation of the human from clay.” (Qur’an 32:7)

Well I know for sure that I taught a night heron this trick in Hawaii. I used to eat lunch at a stream near work and throw bread scraps into the water for the thousands of small tilapia there. A night heron (who are also out in the day), flew from across the stream when he saw the commotion the small fish were making while eating my bread, and landed right near me in about six inches of water. Herons can’t swim but they can wade in shallow water. I threw a piece of bread next to him and he got ready. Even pushed it into a better position. The fish went nuts for the bread and the heron nailed the fish. I did this every day for months and named my bird “Carl”. He’d see me get out of my truck and come flying across the stream to meet me for lunch. Carl would do the same thing this heron is doing. If a bigger fish came along, he’d grab the bread and save it until it left. Then drop it back in for the smaller fish. Smart bird. I counted one time, Carl eating about a dozen little fish in one sitting. “Man, Carl aren’t you full yet?” When I went back to work I’d leave some bread for Carl as bait, he’d grab it and fly across the stream to his nest or whatever. I know for sure that heron’s won’t eat bread because Carl accidentally got a piece of bread in his beak while going for a fish and violently spit it out. You should have seen the look on his face. Like soggy bread was the most disgusting thing he ever had in his mouth. Can’t disagree there, soggy bread will make most people gag. So I know he saved it for bait. Those were good times and it made me wonder how long humans have been doing this with herons? Maybe for thousands of years. Or maybe, herons have always used some kind of floating bait for fish and know that humans have a lot of it and feed the fish. However it started, it is amazing to watch and fun to be a part of it. Peace and aloha to you all. 🤙🏼

Green herons are one of the few species of bird known to use tools. In particular, they commonly use bread crusts, insects, or other items as bait. The bait is dropped onto the surface of a body of water in order to lure fish. When a fish takes the bait, the green heron will then grab and eat the fish. When green herons catch large frogs, they will drown them before swallowing them whole.

I heard down and see a grey heron intently watching a fast narrow spot. Intrigued I sat watching him for about 10 minutes or so when suddenly is head shot downward and snaps up a fish. He came up so quickly his feet slipped on the wet rock and the fish flew out his mouth and splash he went into the drink He came up so mad flapping his wings, jumping up and down screaming or squeaking that you could understand what he was saying. The time spent watching this well picked spot. Muddy water, probably just saw a glimmer flashing by. Then to pull it off and to fail so epically. Swear the fish flying out looked like slow motion. "F***,F**"*Mother F***** Ahh Sh"*" as he's jumping up flaying his wings. It was hilarious.

@@user-nr1vp7pi3p It's actually very interesting with herons, there's several species with novel hunting strageties-not completely unlike unique strategies employed by specific groups of dolphins- and I believe the scientific consensus is just that an ancestor of this species somehow figured this out (turns out animals are far smarter than we thought), and then passed the strategy onto it's kin. It's the best hypothesis out there we have , that I know of at least

It's really not a hard thing to figure out. We ground literally everything and mixed it with water. And that's a weird thing to point out, especially when it's clearly indicated in the bible that nobody's inherently born with the knowledge to do anything. It's kinda presupposed upon that point.

Most birds happen to have opposable thumbs. If you google for example "eagle claw" you'll see it for yourself. Humans beings have opposable thumbs and most of them are dumb as fuck. So for the time being you don't have to worry about a crow or a pigeon taking your job.

People are amazed by animal intelligence only because we come out of an age which considered animals not being creatures „with a soul“. Now we know better. However, the superiority of the human brain over other animal brains will only become more appearent as we try to replicate them digitally. The humans are quite spectacular in this universe, other animals probably not so much.
