A thing I love about this episode is it ties their shared backstory to the last episode where Sanji fed the starving pirate but they don't explicitly call it out. Sanji fed him and when Luffy tells Zeff, the audience is expecting him to get mad. Instead he just smiles and says what a good lad Sanji is. They know that hunger so neither of them will let a hungry person leave without getting fed.

Matt Owens is the showrunner, and he's a massive fan. He actually suffered from some extreme depression when he was younger, and credits finding One Piece as saving his life. When he met with Eiichiro Oda, the mangaka, and told him that, that was when Oda shook his hand and knew that the show was in good hands. Oda actually stipulated that he had to sign off on everything, which is why there are some big changes between this and the anime and manga, but everything really still makes perfect sense. But really, everyone involved is a fan of the story, and it shows. Inaki Godoy, the actor for Luffy, is literally perfect, but Taz Skyler as Sanji is for sure my favorite, and the dude even trained in kickboxing and cooking so he could do those scenes himself. They all respect how incredible One Piece is.

Matt Owens had a quote in an article that he credits as what gave Oda so much confidence in him understanding the story of one piece, that I love "...it’s really a story about how everyone has tragedy, pain, sadness in their life. But it’s not what defines you. What defines you is how you use that to motivate your future. And that no one has to do it alone. No one in this world has to be alone. When you find those people around you, who motivate you and lift you up and help you, that’s the greatest power in this world."

Fishskin is anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial, it supports and improves woundhealing in a variety of wounds, fishskin grafts are oftenly used on patient suffering from burnwounds. Sometimes even maggots are used on really badly burned patients to clear the skin (they only eat dead/necrotic tissue)

SO, I think officially, Sanji's fighting style is apparently a hybrid between Brazilian Capoeria, French Savate and Korean Taekwondo. I can find several quotes where he says he got 2 black belts, and 1 blue belt, and I can only confirm he got a black belt in Taekwondo from an insta post. I don't wanna spend more than 5 mins to figure more details out xD. edit: As in, Taz got the belts, not Sanji the fictinal character.

I'm so glad they used the manga version of Sanji's backstory for this show. In the anime, when their ships were sinking, Zeff had to save Sanji from drowning, but his leg was wrapped around an anchor chain or something, so he cut it off to get to the kid. It honestly hit less hard than him eating his own leg while giving Sanji all the food (plus, it raises the question of how the hell he even survived in that version).

Yeah, that was an unfortunate censoring. But given the time it was released and the fact it's marketed at teenage boys, it's an instance of censorship i can understand the reason very well. Yeah, it has less impact in the anime, but that specific part is something im not even mad over, it was probably not even an option to NOT censor for it to be given an okay to air the episode.

There's really good symbolism here with Zeff. Zeff ate his leg because losing a leg would mean he has to stop being a pirate and settle down, but it still means he can cook. If he ate his arm, he could still be a pirate, but would be impossible for him to cook.

Due to nostalgia, the anime version still hits more for me, but holy hell, they did such a good job with Sanji and Zeff saying goodbye. Props to the actors and editors. And I'mma just say, a lot of people appreciate Zeff more, 800+ chapters later. And Luffy stepping more into the role of a real captain, was in my opinion a bit too fast, but I still like how they did it and he's still just Luffy in the end. And Beth, the one who foresees the production of the show is actually the creator of One Piece, Eiichiro Oda. He loves his creation so much that he doesn't want others messing it up. So he went through the entire process of finding the right actors, artists, stylists, etc. He did not want the final product to be any less than what he envisioned. And damn did it pay off. BIG TIME.

Auto-cannibalism has never been so emotional! It would be so easy to drop the ball on that scene but that look Zeff gives, where he's so utterly broken by everything but sees that his dream can live on, it's perfect. And the whole scene builds TENSION even though we know they both survive. Only other work I've seen that builds tension so much despite us knowing it had a happy ending is Apollo 13. "Because you have the same dream as me" is a big theme in this series! So is characters being much deeper than you would initially think. I saw a video that said the best character in the series is (someone you haven't met but who wears the most ridiculous outfit you'll ever see including a swan tutu). If you guys are ever in Sandy, Oregon, there's a food truck called All Blue. And yes it is very much a reference to One Piece--the cash register is covered in stickers of the crew. (Disclaimer: I didn't actually have the food there so I don't know if they're any good) Zeff is an asshole, but, like with real people, that's not ALL he is. If you guys want to find out a bit about Sanji's blood family, he was in Death Battle. I forget if you watched that episode, but if you haven't then you should probably avoid it now unless youre intentionally seeking out spoilers (also it...really wasn't a very good episode).

@51:05 The show runner, Head writer, Executive producer of the show is Matt Owens who is responsible for the script, writing and he nailed it, and he is the captain of the ship. The mangaka Oda Eiichiro sensei is the navigator, and the one piece manga, color walks, anime etc., are the map and bible for the crew. It was only possible because Matt Owens is a huge long term one piece fan and he understands one piece, it's characters at a very deep level. So, he brought all his love for one piece, all the things he loves in one piece, all the future information he has on the characters, plot etc to the table to make an informed decision in creative process while adaptating the manga to live action by retaining the heart of it all, the soul, spirit of one piece and making necessary changes to adapt it to live action to make it seemless by trying to keep the same vibes of the original without falling into uncanny valley. Another major reason this worked so well is that the original mangaka Oda Eiichiro sensei is also a executive producer, who made agreement that it'll only be out after he OKs everything. Oda sensei has been heavily involved in the scripts, casting, creative decisions, and every change and decision had to be approved by Oda sensei's team. It is Matt Owens who is the person who convinced Oda sensei that he is the right person for this project and he can be trusted with one piece adaptation by showing Oda sensei how much one piece means to him, what one piece has done in his life, how it helped him in his darkest times, and Oda sensei got convinced by the conviction of Matt Owens and ofc his skills and credentials to agree to this. And the directors were chosen very wisely to fit the specific arc they are directing, which is a great decision. Those directors even though didn't know about one piece had respect for the original and the scripts by the writer's room headed by Matt Owens is so good that, they just had to focus on how to get a scene, visual, emotion right. And Oda sensei gave notes to the team and corrections on specifically about the intention behind any specific scene and what something specific is supposed to convey and that level of deeper insight gave the directors deeper understanding, equipping them with the nuanced thought behind each scene, characters, so that they can use their skill to teh fullest to bring about that essense without watering it down and portray it as intended on screen in the best way possible with their own ideas, talents, and vision, without straying from the intent of those scenes. And the art directors took one piece manga, color walks and Oda sensei's clarifications, notes as reference along with Matt Owens's insight into the one piece story, world, lore to design props, background, posters, newspaper articles, wall paintings, background banners etc, to include many inworld details to make it lived in, as well as so so many eater eggs for casual and hard-core fans at many levels. It all shows in the output. If it's not for Matt Owens' vision, conviction and Oda sensei's care and supervision this would've have succeeded at this level. That's for sure. There have been lot of changes in live action from manga to fit the "Netflix's" episodic model with cliffhangers, etc, while adapting, some great additions, some good, a very few not so great due to budgetary constraints of Netflix. Also, due to writer strike, Matt owens even though he is the show runner was not fully involved in some if the production which resulted in some suboptimal decisions, which won't happen in future. But all in all, inspite of all that, what they came up with is no less than a miracle and is something no one expected to work, and it passed with flying colors in the hearts on the fans. It is even attracting normies to give one piece a chance and actually end up liking it and some actually giving animanga a chance. My normie friends who don't get animation love one piece and are eagerly waiting for season 2 and i could talk with them about one piece. That's a big WIN due to this live action. It put one piece in the mainstream!! Another reason it all worked out is that many people in the production team of one piece project are one piece fans. The music composers Sonya and Gionna are huge ine piece fans themselves and they made the sound tracks of the live action very memorable, exciting and as good as the original, I even am feeling nostalgic about the live action music now..😂 Then many actors like Emily Rudd are huge One piece fans in the crew. And some many others started watching or reading one piece after joining the team. Everyone is having that appreciation fir th original and they just want their beloved characters and story reach wider audience through this live action and that sentiment shows in the final output. There may be few things that we animanga fans want to be improved upon, especially longer run time (10 episodes)as originally planned which would solve many minor complaints that we animanga fans have about the live action, but none the less this turned out great and I personally who have been supporting this live action project from the beginning from 2019, when I first heard Matt Owens speak in the Reverie, that gave me faith and I'm happy that my long wait is brought to fruition by the output. One piece is one of the greatest stories of all time especially in modern literature, and they nailed the show for what it is to standalone on its own and be a great show along with being a great adaptation of a manga and be so good at so many levels, the writing, characters, character arcs, plot, plot threads, foreshadowings, plot resolutions, full circle kinda storytelling at multiple levels and aspects, acting, cinematography, lighting, set designs, direction, music, action, choreography, CGI, and many many more.., all of which were implemented at a very high level. And absolutely, shout out to the editors who did a fantastic job to stitch it all together so beautifully. They managed to strike the balance between humor, light heartedness, sense of adventure, action, wacky superpowers with seriousness, emotion, character work, heart and acting. That's something which is very very hard and Matt Owens has to be given credit for coming up with such a great script to hit all the great moments in the manga, within such a short condensed format, retaining the soul of the original, yet making it all feel earned at the end in the live action. That's a marvelous feat in itself.

A controversial change from the manga was that they cut out a battle with Luffy and the pirate captain who Mihawk killed in the previous episode. Between that and Zoro’s fight with Mihawk, it showed Sanji witnessing how Luffy and Zoro have the grit to follow their dreams. Which was a huge factor that convinced Sanji to join the crew. I think he still sees that in them but it’s easy to overlook because they have a ton of material they need to convey in the few episodes they have left. It’s at this point we see some really hard crunch they had to do, because they were aiming for at least 10 episodes but only got 8.

I dunno that it was 'that' controversial tbh. A lot of people felt Don Krieg was the most generic/boring villain of the East Blue saga, if not in One Piece period; heck, quite a few long-time One Piece fans watching the LA were thrilled to see him killed by Mihawk. Having seen the man in action, I had zero issues with it myself because he was just... your standard bad boss; no more, no less. Not all that exciting, really ^Sure, some meme "Justice for Don Krieg", but it largely seems to be an ironic/sarcastic sentiment rather than a genuine one, at least as far as I've seen.

@@Omegafire17 The reason people find it controversial is due to the effect it has on Sanji. How to some it lessens his decision to join Luffy. It was home he watched Luffy and Zoro pursuing their dreams even if it meant dying here that showed him the value in chasing his dream. Personally I don’t mind it as I feel it’s still there. However the LA makes it feel more like it was a thing Sanji has been wanting to do for a long while. Rather than something Sanji decided to do after meeting Luffy. Manga and anime Sanji was more willing to die protecting Zeff and his restaurant.

Eiichiro Oda, the original author, is the one who co-directed this series. He made sure that it followed the emotional intensity of the original manga. Cases like this where the original author's intent is respected in an adaptation are very rare, that's why it's so good. He is the one who personally chose the actors, the scenery and everything else. If he didn't like something, most of the time it was deleted from the final footage. The choice of exposing Garp as Luffy's grandpa so early in the story was the only plot element brought by the Netflix crew. Oda was against it at first, but after hearing their reasons for suggesting it, he changed his mind.

"so he knows" I mean he probably figured it out when he heard Luffy's full name. Garp only told him his name was Luffy and he had a strawhat, but Mihawk later says he wants to speak to Monkey D. Luffy so in the meantime he found out Luffy's last name which is the same as the last name of the vice admiral who just asked him to seek Luffy. Not that hard to put the pieces together from there xD "very much works for the character" Yes, whether you know the original or not, Mihawk in the live action is basically perfect. Almost all of the actors are well casted but you can see that some are still inexperienced or clumsy sometimes, but a few others are perfect from start to finish like Helmeppo's, Buggy's and Mihawk's actors. You saw Christian Bale because the exact face he makes before climbing on the Merry is a Bale face with a Bale smile. I mean I get the feeling in general, but in this moment in particular it was basically Christian Bale.

One Piece always makes references to folktales, like how Usopp is a clear nod to Pinocchio and the Boy who cried Wolf. Somehow I feel like the two bags thing is a reference to the Japanese folktale about the old man who, after feeding some mice/saving a sparrow, gets rewarded with either a small box or a big box and he humbly chooses the smaller one. The smaller one was filled with treasure and the bigger one was filled with monstrosities. Here, the bigger one is filled with treasure but its still the smaller bag that is the one with value

I love your guys' analysis at the end of each one of these episodes. You guys insight. Is so good Ask for the person behind the scenes. I would probably credit, mostly oda. Since he always made the final decision on scenes and casting.and even design Although I would also say the show runner, Matt. Owens has a lot to do with it as well. Since he is a huge one piece fan. Which I mean? About. Almost the whole entire crew is a massive fan. And you can tell with how much love was put into the making of this series❤ Although I would also say the show runner, Matt. And Mihawk and garp are held in such high regards both amazing characters and in the anime everytime they are ever on the screen every one piece fan can literally picture probably every scene they are that epic.

Usopp's slingshot has less velocity of more accuracy than a pistol, it also gives him a better ammo selection. Right now it does less damage than a pistol, so after zeph shot Arlong, all he could do was hide.

Even though Nami thought it was wrong for Luffy to let Zorro fight (And she was right in a way, Zorro shouldn't have tried. But Zorro thought he was near the top himself), this was what showed Zorro that Luffy wouldn't stand in the way of his dream. Was willing to let Zorro risk his life for it. Knowing that, made it so Zorro could swear to follow Luffy. At least, in my opinion.

As you guessed the captain of the show is the creator of One Piece - Eichiro Oda. Unlike most shows of this nature he retained control of the IP and had final say on whether things were good enough to make the cut, which he used more than once. He's actually still creating the series though! Chapter 1115 of the manga came out this week (may 2024).

Rogue waves, like the ones shown destroying the two ships, are a real thing. For millenia, they were legends. Ships would disappear and sometimes wreckage would be found, but the stories of giant waves that came out of nowhere and could destroy ships were dismissed as tall tales. They don't develop near shores and usually leave no survivors, so they did sound like fantasy. But thanks to modern satellites, we now know they exist. And can be avoided.

This live action adaptation of Netflix's 'One Piece' was produced as a collaboration between Tomorrow Studios, and Eiichiro Oda (Author of One Piece) who served as executive producer with Matt Owens ('Luke Cage,' 'Agents of S.H.I.E.L. D'), Steve Maeda ( 'CSI: Miami,' 'Lost'), Marty Adelstein and Becky Clements. There is news circulating that Netflix will not release it if Oda doesn't like the results of the Live Action,

This would be my last time saying this on each of the Ep6 reaction :- Zoro vowing to protect Luffy's dream, after Luffy defended Zoro's, was such a good choice on the showrunners part. This change suits the medium, while in the anime, Zoro was literally playing pirates with Luffy from the get go..the promise happens the same, but loyalty was earned better here.

Both the show runner Matt Owens, and the author Oda, basically made sure everything flowed as well as possible. Every 2 episodes have a different director. And the final 2 episodes of this season were edited right before the writer and actor strikes happened. So while still great. The editing wasn't quite what Matt Owens wanted them to be.

This is just a glimps of how emotional one piece is. I'll tell you, you will experience more of this. Watch the anime. You will experience sobbing like a baby, laugh like you never laughed before, hate characters to death, and experience trauma just like the rest of us. One piece can deceive you with this goofy characters but it can be brutal at times.

They did the 'expecting someone bigger' joke because Arlong in the manga and anime is roughly 9ft tall. And later we meet fishmen who are even taller than him. Stronger to - the average fishman is at least 3 times stronger than the average human (emphasis on the words 'at least' and 'average), Arlong is stronger than most, but there are other fishmen who beat him in a fight (a few years ago). As you can imagine, actors who are 9ft tall are kind of rare.

I love that they added this extra bit of Zoro's injury. The anime shows him wounded, but he isn't out for so long. This bit shows just how scared Luffy is to lose people close to him. We don't see this side of Luffy in the first 400 eps of the anime.

I agree that it's a very find line between dramatic and tacky and this show is a master class in on properly building expectation and not overplaying your hand. I also love how Zeff was written. Yes, he is rough and an asshole to Sanji and in the beginning it's easy to write him off as a jerk, but by the end you not only see why, but agree. Also, per Oda (the creator od One Piece), the live action is based on the manga and not the anime. I'll stop flooding you with my rhetoric now I promise... Or do I?

I guess they gave the Baratie a maitre'd who was a fishman to stop us from assuming that all fishmen are like Arlong, and to tell us something minor but kind of significant about Arlong - for all his massive, MASSIVE faults, he won't harm a fellow fishman (beyond a few fights we saw much later int he show in someone else's memories, but it was never anything that serious).

And that was before.....well.....let's just say we may eventually find out the answer to the questions some may have had about his backstory, chiefly the one about 'were his parents on that ship before it sunk?'

So, something I think fits this episode. Later in the series, and I don't think one line out of context is too spoiler-y, Luffy says "I'm not a hero. Heroes share their food and I want it all for myself." And then a video I watched a couple weeks back pointed out: Luffy sees sharing food as a heroic act. Therefore everyone who shares their food with him is a hero to him. And then look at what Zeff did for Sanji.
