24:13 No matter how many times I see this part Roger skipping like a happy little kid always makes me smile. Also fun fact: Roger's sword is called Ace. He named his son after his sword. The sword is one of the 12 Supreme Grade blades.

@@sempakgragas dude Roger isn't even that sick here. Just for your info. Roger got sick at 49+ you know. And this Roger here is nearly 50. Plus in the vivre card it's said that his sickness only affected his lifespan. And the scenes of him coughing are literally complete filler if you didn't know. And crocus said that Roger's sickness doesn't affect his strength. And Whitebeard said you look great Roger meaning Roger was same as ever.

I remember when Momo said "oh Roger? I remember him" and everyone dismissed it as a childish lie cuz he couldn't have known him since he hadn't been born yet...but he was telling the truth! Oda literally puts this stuff right in front of us and we don't see it!!!

Momo being a time traveler was actually a pretty common theory after Zou as I recall. Though people thought the samurai group had been time hopping constantly since the void century, and when the crew actually got to wano we would find out that it was more like modern Japan with no samurai.

Oden was the first commander of the 2nd division of the Whitebeards. That was Ace's divison when he was still alive.

The thing that one piece did throughout the years is the great usage of characters. They didn’t use old characters to show how strong the new characters are, instead the used the new characters to reinforce how strong the old characters actually were. And the Oden flashback is the epitome of that concept.

The pirate who fights Oden when he meets Toki was part of the Whitebeard's Fleed in the Paramount War. I love how Oda includes this little details in the story.

The Kozuki Clan were the ones who craved the messages into the Ponegliffs. As we learned from Zou. But the language is from a lost civilisation as it was mentioned in Ohara.

When Ace took care of the 2nd division of the WB pirates, they said it was vacant for many years, and now we find out it was leaded by Oden. Oda is a genius.

Oden is like a combination of Luffy, Zoro and Sanji. He's such a great man

similarities between roger and luffy is soooo much when he was going to fight oden that nature of roger is pure similar to luffy

Blackbeard never sleeps is a reference to what Sanji said when fighting the Lapins at Drum Island around episode 80. He said people in cold countries never sleep. He was just having conversation with Luffy. Also it was at Drum we heard about Blackbeard for the first time. He was probably born at one of the poles, which means atop of the Red Line

Luffy said he heard that in a bar (the Windmill Village bar). Shanks' crew frequented the bar so he may have heard it from them, and Shanks learns it from Buggy. People who never sleep never dream, unless they dream while they are awake! Zehahaha!

I'm pretty sure it's not a reference to that specifically lol. The cold people no sleep thing was a gag based on the "survival hack" that sleeping when you're in cold mountains should be avoided at all costs as it will cause hypothermia (is this a saying only in Japan? I've never heard of ppl talk about this outside of Japan).

Blackbeard literally has never slept in his life, was born in a cold country (literally or figuratively), and the reason for that is going to be a huge part of his backstory. Lock it in.

That Octopus guy who attacked Oden, indeed joined whitebeard crew after this point. just check him up in the War of the Best. He is within Whitebeards' naval crew. 1 of the captains under Whitebeard.

Wow the conqueror'a haki clashes were so fire and intense🔥 Whitebeard and Oden Whitebeard and Roger

You probably miss it since the anime couldnt make the detail, but 3 years younger Roger, when they showed him after Oden joined WB, was look very much like Ace just older with mustache. But When he meet Oden, his face was so rapidly aging coz his illness was taking over him by a lot.

I like that oda added an effect to indicate when the character is using Haki so that we can know when Haki was used and what Haki was used. like when Roger and whitebeard used observation haki to see the future.

Well, rather than saying "Oda did it" let's recognize that the anime producers at Toei are the ones working the sound and visual cues we don't get to experience in manga. Maybe Oda gives input, but I believe he is way to busy on manga, and other projects to actually manage every single detail on anything but the Manga.

@@justafox0 there are indications of haki, because luffy can already see haki, such as the black color of armament haki, eyes light up observing haki, electricity when conquering haki.

I have realized that since oden was released in the manga that the ost called Gold and Oden was foreshadowing this moment this entire time My mind was blown when I realized this

Aight, time for some fun facts: 1) The old hag is called Kurozumi Higurashi and she was the previous wielder of the Clone-Clone fruit, now owned by Bon Clay 2) The gramps is Kurozumi Semimaru and he was the previous wielder of the Barrier-Barrier fruit (shown in an ep that isn't on this set, but w/e), now owned by Bartolomeo 3) Roger's sword is one of the 12 Supreme Grade blades and is called, get this, Ace! EXACTLY like his son!

20:27 Why did Ruff skip the part were she turn into Shiki the Golden Lion?

I think we all need to remember that before Roger...there was no King of the Pirates. Titles and nicknames are social constructs (in reality and fiction) , and it is the people after Roger died that gave him the title of King of the Pirates. So what he said to Oden and Whitebeard was something completely different. And Shanks said that a boy from East Blue said the same thing Roger said. The boy being Luffy. Also, there was a scene where Luffy told Sabo and Ace his "dream", but they were flabbergasted to say the least. The scene where Luffy said his "true dream" to his crew hasn't been animated so I'll leave this here for future stuff

I personally feel like this backstory is the peak of Wano and what a peak it is. Its so fun seeing Oden win everyone over just by being the menace he is.

Not sure if someone has mentioned it yet or not but Marco was Whitebeards first crewmate. He was still a kid when Whitebeard made him his first "son". He's 15 in these flashbacks.

This is easily the greatest flashback that any series ever has contrived. This was a fucking masterpiece by Oda and Toei, so well done! Side note: I would kill for a side series about the old generation (Roger, Whitebeard, etc...)

I have been waiting over a year to see you react to Roger vs Whitebeard. I should´ve guessed you would be overwhelmed, but I didnt expect you to just stare at it all in awe. Forgive me but I laughed my ass of at your dumbfounded face :D Im delighted to see you enjoy this all so much.

Prime Whitebeard is of course something else, you can see why the navy flipped out so far with just a dying one in Marineford. Oden was strong but not strong enough to beat him, still though he remained determined, and after saving his future wife he gained a position on the ship as Second Division Commander - Ace's future position - sailing with Inu, Neko and Izou. However, in his journeys, Wano worsens under the poison of the Kurozumi. Orochi's family was hunted for attempting to assassinate the Daimyos so they would be next in line, but when discovered they are hunted. Egged on my fellow Kurozumi, the lady having Bon Clay's devil fruit, Orochi is empowered with the new fruit and slowly rises via deception and stealing money, until getting to the position of Shogun. Oden's first taste of adventure is fruitful, but things are even more pivotal come Roger's appearance. The first attack we see of the future pirate king can easily brush Oden away, and then there is the Clash of Kings: an incredible clash where neither blade is even touching one another. After the fighting, the three chat much like Luffy and his brothers did, and after hearing Roger's dream, Oden begs Whitebeard to let him join Roger on his final voyage.

This arc is great as a whole but this flashback is my favorite part of it.

King of the pirates was a title created for roger, It never existed before that nor did roger think of being one.

The scene of wb,oden & roger drinking together is something you'll see again and it's something great.

Bartolomeo and Bon Clay previous fruits owners. I like that Newgate looked Oden as his little brother and concerned for the safety of his family after he joined Roger's crew.

When I caught up with One Piece it was like a few episodes before this backstory and I had to painfully wait week to week to see the backstory

The octopus guy is Karma who we first met during Marineford as part of Whitebeard’s fleet.

I really like how Oden is the only one on Whitebeard's crew who he sees as a brother, rather than a son.

I think it's the wave in Roger's hair that makes him look more like Ace here. Since I don't remember seeing that in the other flashbacks.

So many conqueror's haki clash to defend or just to flex, but Roger and Whitebeard use conqueror's haki to greet each other xD

29:27 every crew member of Whitebeard pirates were considered and called as sons by Whitebeard, all except of Oden( he was more of a brother to Whitebeard))

The battle between Roger and Whitebeard highlights that if Whitebeard had been 100% during the Marineford War, he would have easily destroyed anyone outside of Garp.

It sounded very unrealistic and crazy when back in Zou, Momonosuke said he had met Roger but It made more sense after learning he came from the past and he was born and raised in the sea. Oda, genius, thinking about everything.

Oden is just like the monster trio in one body Luffy for his sense of adventure and foof Zoro for his swordsmanship and bloodlust Sanji his soft spot for woman and good at cooking.

Ruff, i guess someone in patreon or similar did tell this to you, but remember that OST called "Gold and Oden"? That is one of the most oldest soundtracks maded for One Piece, is foreshadowing as his peak, and i heard Oda himself ask to Toei to put that name in that OST, and if that is the case, it makes Wano one of the Arcs that Oda Planned since the beggining.

This is where the hyped episodes animations start to pop off

Amatsuki Toki (voiced by Keiko Han) age 26 - 28, birthday Jan. 19th, blood type X, height 190 cm / 6’3”, has the Toki Toki no mi / Time-Time Fruit, like Kozuki her family name also contains the kanji for moon & is 1 of the damiyo families

Something really neat here is Whitebeard had Oden lead the second division on his ship. Years later when Ace was given the same position, Teach said that Oden's former position was vacant for a long time. Ace succeeds Oden as the second commander. Which is ironic since it was Roger who took Oden in the first place. That being said, you have to give it to Oden. He sees Whitebeard, attacks him, and then demands to join his crew mid-battle. That was Luffy-levels of determination right there.

Oden took that megaton punch and all it did was give him a few scuffs on his face, goddamn.

Each time I watch RuffSenpai wonders the idea of the Poneglyphs originating from the Land of Wano, I always remember in Zou, we've learned that Oden's family line had created the Poneglyphs in the first place.

On my first watch through It struck me as weird that Whitebeard called Oden his brother, whereas he calls everyone else his son. But it makes sense now why he let Oden run a muck and be a menace on his ship. He said earlier that Oden wouldn't be a good follower, and Oden didn't even finish his task to become a crew member, but Whitebeard let Oden on the ship, let him keep his friends, let his start and raise a whole family on his ship, because Oden was never a crew member, he was a little brother that made WB's life more interesting.

Whitebeard is such a g, had no reaction to Rogers dream to be the best pirate crew because that was never Whitebeard's goal, he just wanted a family. This was super obvious through his much more negative reaction to Roger taking one of his brothers, and his lack of interest for the treasure that Roger left behind. Heck, he even wanted to return it so his brother could be living well.

Blackbeard is why shanks told luffy people in cold climates don't sleep.
