Gear 2, increasing blood flow. Gear 3, increasing Bone Growth. Gear 4, increasing Muscle. Gear 5? Doing all three, without limits, as pure complete control over his body at will.

I can understand why people dont like gear 5th but to me its absolutely perfect for luffy, it represents his personality completely and is just absurd. Luffy has always represented freedom and fun and gear 5th is that personified.

Because until this point, the show has always been super serious. Sure, there were some funny moments and jokes scattered about here and there. But then it gets super series and epic. And it is those Epic moments that people love the show for. Luffy going Gear 2 for the first time. The fight with Arlong, Rob Lucci, and Kaido. Reveal of Raizo being safe. Zoro's "Nothing Happened", the Entire Marineford Arc, every time Luffy uses Conqueror's Haki before the time skip. Punching the Celestial Dragon, and teaching Bellamy how to punch. The best moments, are NOT when Luffy is goofing off, having fun, and making jokes. It's when things are VERY serious, important, and his Transformations come out at very dark and cruel times as a kinda 'Deus Ex' to win the impossible Odds. But this? This is Anti-One Piece. It turns the show into a Cartoon. There can NEVER be a Serious moment anymore. There can NEVER be anymore "Nothing Happened" moment, no Celestial Punch, no epic fight like Katakori or Arlong. Everything from this moment on, is Loony Toons logic, and the show noses dives, immediately from this epic greatness of story telling and lore peak, right into the ground and down to the hells of Basic, slap stick, non-sense, illogical, plothole filled bullshit from Loony Toons, Tom and Jerry, and other slapstick humor cartoons. Which don't get me wrong, those shows are funny, but that's cause those shows are DESIGNED around that cartoony action and humor. There is no story, continuity, just slap stick humor as the characters beat each other up for whatever reason. One Piece was telling an epic long story content that people loved. Then it went full Twilight levels of storytelling. It FEELS like a Fanfiction, like some little kid got ahold of the show and decided Gear 5 was going to be Cartoon, cause what they want is mostly cartoon and don't know anything else exists. That also doesn't account for the Animation, which ALSO took a nose dive in poor quality as well, looking more simple, cartoonish, and no longer serious or epic. Everything just fails, across the board from this point forward. Cause now Luffy is a God, with unlimited strength, that no one can challenge or beat. He can INSTANTLY just go get the One Piece right this second, and there is NO ONE that could stop him, as he is a God among mortals, and able to beat and kill everyone at this point. There can NEVER be anymore conflicts, there can never be any more fighting, there can never be any serious moment from this point onward. Cause God is now there, and can solve everything instantly. And if he doesn't, that's a massive plothole to the story.

Or are you a little kid, where I can wave a bunch of flashy lights and keys above your head and that's all you need to be intertain, with no actual depth or good storytelling? For example. How did Luffy revive from the dead? We've LITERALLY seen, the VERY SECOND that someone Dies, their Devil Fruit instantly transfers to the nearest fruit. As seen with the Axolotl's Slime Slime during Punk Hazzard. Where he died, and the VERY SECOND he died, a nearby apple right at his feet instantly turned into his Devil Fruit. So how did Luffy die, but then came back to life with his powers? What's Worse, how did he go from having no energy and strength, right on death's door, doing his 'Final Attack', to full health, full power, and somehow Awakening his Fruit, which is ALSO a Total Retconned, as awakening a Devil Fruit is meant to be even more rare than Conquerer's Haki, and comes from altering your fundamental understanding of what your Devil Fruit is and your powers, to the point you see the world as part of your powers too and thus awaken and effect the world. Meanwhile Luffy just thinks he is Rubber, and has no idea he is a God or what his abilities are, so how can he use them and understand them, while not knowing what they are? It would be as if he could do Gear 4, at the very beginning in East Blue, with no understanding of what Haki is or how to use it. It's THAT much of a MASSIVE Plothole. So please. Discuss and debate. Explain to me all the plotholes above so I can enjoy One Piece again. Cause I want to enjoy it. But I can't just turn my brain off when massive plotholes and inconsistences happen on such a massive scale.

@@TimY-ef4sy Agreed. I'm glad Oda didn't do the 1000th anime with a protagonist with some ultra edgy demon form or basically super saiyan. One Piece is being original here. Big props for that.

Funny thing: Back when Gear 5 was first revealed in the manga a lot of fans hated it. They believed it would be more epic and tougher looking, but when they saw how goofy it all was many claimed it was the worst in the series. However, this was on purpose by Oda. Over the years he had grown tired of every final transformation having to be this serious/tough look, so he chose to do the opposite. And apparently Gear 5 is based off the original idea for Luffy's powers. He wanted his Gum Gum abilities to mimic that of old school cartoons, but for some reason he chose to shelve it until Gear 5 came into the picture.

I think the most striking difference between Gear5 and any other Gear is that Luffy NEEDED them to fight and become stronger Luffy is someone who loves goofing around He even calls them ''Omoshiroi'' (interesting, exciting) But the conditions he's in force him to get serious to protect his friends The best example of that is G4th Even though the form looks silly and ridiculous, Luffy isn't which is why it can come off as ''edgy'' or more serious And that's the main difference He's fighting in a way that is required but isn't the best fit for him In G5 however he gets to fight the way he WANTS to fight

After waiting a year and a half to see the gear 5 in action, we can say that this was an iconic moment from the anime that was simply magnificent.

Gear 4 Tankman is always forgotten, even by Toei lol

Gear2 blood Gear3 bone Gear4 muscle Gear5 "awakening is when your body and mind catch up with your power." Though since the audience only sees armament haki, gear4 without visible haki is cursed looking(saw an edit on reddit) but also reminds me of Garp for some reason.

Gear 5 is so goofy, I love it. It's like Luffy is so insanely strong at this point that he can just toy with his opponents. He doesn't need to take fights as seriously anymore.

Gear 4 might have used to make me emotionally hyped when I was catching up 7 years ago, but the title of godly has been taken by Gear 5. It's making me cry every time I see it. Childhood nostalgia meets reverence, it's pure joy, but the soundtrack does most of the work getting me worked up.

After watching all of the gear transformations back, it makes sense that Luffy's Devil Fruit is a Zoan. Explains how he's able to freely manipulate certain aspects of his body. Gear Second is his bloodstream, allowing him to move faster Gear Third is his bones, which gives him strength Gear Fourth is his muscles, which gives him a mix of both (bounce man), more speed (snake man) or general resilience (tank man) And Gear Fifth is his awakening, giving him more freedom and control over his body, as well as the environment around him. Luffy's power isn't just a rubber body, it's freedom and imagination.

I was there for your Water 7 reactions right when you were doing the JoJo Stone Ocean manga. Thank you, Ruff, for being the main source of reigniting my unbridled love for the series that completely changed my life & its trajectory in equal parts back in 2010 when I was 17.

I have re watched One Piece many times but I have to say one of most enjoyable watches and seeing it again with your reactions. Love your energy and thoughts on the series Ruff. Thanks for bringing me even more enjoyment out of this series than I've already received

One reason why Enies Lobby is one of my favourite arc, was that other than each individual member's power up, we get to see 2 new gears from Luffy. It's just one surprise after the other. Th hype just cant be contained

Yoooo Nightmare, Water n Afro Luffy being foreshadows is a clever take even if it might be a stretch, no pun intended. Good on y' either way. Also for what its worth, I recently heard someone saying Nika n Joyboy are based on or at least have some similarities to a Haitian God as well!

its good to see people who haven’t been spoiled to watch transformations, it only a one in a time feeling.

Gear 4 bounce man will always be my favourite, but Gear 5 vs Kairo is my favourite fight, not just because of the animations, but how goofy the fight is and yet luffys power is menacing the whole fight. But gear 4 bounce man looks sick to me while also being a balanced amount of funny and unimtimidating. Gear 4 in general is just amazing.

What's crazy is that Second Gear IS like kaioken, only difference is that kaioken is activated with ki(automatically) and Gear 2 is activated with luffy's limbs(manually)

So in fact all his gear before Gear 5 were a manifestation of his real power awekening in gear 5. His freedom of imagination that authorize him to imaginated all of kind of transformations.

People need to understand that from the very beginning Luffy was a loony tunes character forced to play by normal laws of physics. His ultimate form is one where he gets to decide what the laws of physics are. It's really not a hard concept, but I guess gatekeeping purists love to get upset about cartoons in their anime, because they watch anime as a rejection of western animation, thinking it signals them as cultured, and not out of any sincere respect for the medium.

Now we need a second part with : Water Luffy, Afro Luffy, Nightmare Luffy and most important Ultra Instinct aka Stupid Luffy the form when he fought Enel 😆

Man I remember when G2 and G3 were brand new, it was just a cool ass creative way to make use of the fact that he’s rubber.

In hindsight I think Sanji's stealth black transformation influenced Luffy's gear 4 snakeman transformation. I bet, before he saw Sanji's suit in action, SM looked like bounce mans. After that sailor moon sparkle fest, Luffy thought "sooo cooool! I wanna do that too, " and he unconsciousy made it happen. As one famously tyrannical jump rope once said "rubber shouldn't be able to do this".
