Today, Anna discusses vintage vs modern Rolex watches!!!
Specifically, she dives headfirst into two iconic models from the Rolex lineup, a 2008 Oyster Perpetual and a 1964 Oyster Perpetual Date 1500, and sees how they stack up against one another. The 1500 is 34mm in diameter, with a smooth steel bezel and Oyster bracelet. Its creamy silver sunray dial features stick markers and alpha hour and minute hands. The automatic movement in this watch is a tank, a direct descendant of the earliest "perpetual" movements that Rolex pioneered.
Next, we have the 1500's distant cousin, the 116000 Oyster Perpetual. Its brilliant blue sunburst dial features an Explorer style layout, complete with lumed numerals. At 36mm, it's not the same 34 as the originals, but it 100% works as far as a contemporary sport-casual Rolex goes. It definitely feels like an upgrade compared to the 1500 on a technical level, though it does lose a bit of the restraint and elegance that that model has. It also features serious improvements in the steel and movement. Rolex's modern 904L stainless steel meets the equally modern 3130 caliber inside, making for one seriously durable watch with longevity in spades.

You can't really compare the quality of the vintage Rolex to modern Rolex. The vintage pieces are inferior in almost every respect when compared to modern standards. Buy vintage for the uniqueness, charm and history but they just don't compare in terms of quality.

Right. I'd get the modern one and keep it for the rest of my life. It would be modern now, but a classic years later. And it only has my "story" in it, not the previous owner.

The difference in quality is negligible - the steel grade of each is irrelevant, the only concrete criteria worth considering is - can the calibre keep time over a period of years - both vintage and modern (as shown in the video) perform on that front. Comparison of quality is just a fanciful flight of the imagination. If the watch has something along the lines of a 3135 calibre, which has been about since the 1980s - then there is nothing on the current market that you will actually notice in terms of improved quality. Likewise, if you have a vintage watch and bracelet with 316L steel - then you have a grade that cannot be discerned as different in any way from 904L steel (unless you're a metallurgist). The spec for both grades of steel are lightyears removed from what is needed on a watch bracelet - the complete overkill spec is marketing.

A bit of trivia. Did you know the Oyster Perpetual with the 3 6 9 dial was described in the James Bond novels? It was mistakenly identified, by watch aficionados as an Explorer model BUT Ian Fleming never penned the model as such. He did however describe James Bond as wearing an Oyster Perpetual with 3 6 9 numerals. So this could be the actual model of Rolex Ian Fleming suggested. The Explorer is an imposter! At almost double the price and using the same 3130 calibre as the OP, why does the Explorer get all the love? Goes to show how marketing can be a game changer.

The blue explorer dial op 36 is the first watch that caught my eye and got me into watches this pandemic. The explorer numerals are uniqueand sporty. The blue sunburst dial is amazing. I thought it was way out of my budget at the time but half a year later I have a Longines Record and Tudor bb 58 blue which added together at the price I bought is basically exactly the price of this at retail before the new oyster perpetual came out.

Both great watches. Many watchmakers say the 1570 was the best wristwatch movement ever made. No question that the 1500 series of movements, starting in 1957 and ending in 1989, made the brand’s reputation what it is today.

1:32 except at 3 and 9...Not sure how comparable these wat ches actually are...you can compare vintage to modern, but at the end of the day, it seems to be a matter of preference, because technically speaking, a modern Rolex should be better in all aspects regarding build quality, materials, durability, and longevity! The watch would be "technically" better, and it could still lose to a vintage piece! I would buy a paul neuman daytona over a modern daytona in a heart beat, but only because I love the aesthetic of that dial, even though I know that technically, the modern daytona is a better watch...both beautiful pieces, but preference chooses the watch you'll end up buying...which I guess is true in every scenario...great video, love the way you shoot the watches...it really gives a good idea as to what the textures of the watch are like!

Explorers, OPs and Datejusts look similar. Get a vintage 36mm Oysterquartz in steel. Low production numbers, beautifully decorated movement, accurate to 6 secs per year, and the unique angular case looks better than a Royal Oak. A bargain rare Rolex for a connoisseur. James Dowling owns a few Oysterquartz and my Rolex Service Centre Watchmaker wears one too. Bearing in mind that the Oysterquartz was worn by Reinhold Messner to climb mt Everest in 1978. It was also famously worn by Edmund Hilary who supposedly wore an Explorer in 1953 but wore an Oysterquartz in his later years.

The vintage Rolex bracelet feels like a £50 seiko bracelet , the modern OP feels like a solid chuck of steel that happens to be watch shaped. The 36mm OP size case shape and bracelet are perfection. If you like your Rolex on a strap then vintage adds a little more coolness to the watch. I would go new Rolex because it was the same price as vintage, comes with a 5 year warranty 10 year service interval and I wouldn’t cry too much if it gets wet. Getting both is clearly the best move lol

I bought the same OP (116000) in this video a few months ago, my first modern Rolex, and I have to say I’m loving it. I don’t like all the modern ceramic stuff, and all the hype, but the 36mm is so understated. It has a nice solid feel that obviously you don’t get with vintage. At 34mm, its hard to choose .... both are amazing. The vintage has more charm though, through and through. The modern is theoretically more suited stronger as daily beater but in practice both are great in that role. I think the modern is only justified if you need that 39mm size which the vintage can't provide. If choosing between two 34mm watches I'd take the vintage.

When you buy a vintage Rolex, you listen to the story the watch is telling you. When you buy a new Rolex, you write the story of the watch so that its future owners can listen to it. In short, a Rolex (or any watch, for that matter) is like a book - if you go vintage, you will get a classic story that corresponds to a particular era, but if you go modern, it's like picking up a ruled book, writing a story, and then becoming recognized for that story at the end of it.

There is ascetic NO comparison when the size of the Rolex is different regardless of when made, whereas the 36mm or 39mm watches have no comparison to the 34mm which the latter is more comfortable to wear especially with the Jubilee bracelet. The older or vintage Rolex watches such as the 1500/1570 is a much nicer watch - period! Something went wrong with Rolex sometime after the year 2000 with the thicker 15000 series (soon eliminating the 34mm all together) while going with the crowd making gargantuan ugly timepieces most of which have little to no usefulness regarding the trendy and obscene size; yes a submariner or GMT need to be big with protective horns at the winding button so to conform to environment while any Oyster chronometer is certified and intended to perform open ocean navigation and waterproof for diving, proving - that there is no such thing as an entry-level Rolex. The success with the new 3200 movement remains to be scene as I have read several reports that the balance may have oscillation issues that may have something to do with the parachrome hairspring...I hope to be wrong. As far as servicing a Rolex - do yourself a favor and have Rolex itself do that for you as you will be charged the same amount by anybody else and not guaranteed the caliber service and parts replaced. And unless qualified by Rolex - your returned watch will be as good as new - and yes - wearable in salt water. I just had my forty-year old 15200 serviced by Rolex NY outfitted with a better more scratch-resistant plastic crystal, new mainspring, winding button and shaft and outfitted with a new Jubilee bracelet for $1,450 extra with no polishing - now keeping -0.6 second per day. Most important - I thank you so much for showing this exceptional 34mm Rolex with the creamy silver dial - in fact I am looking for a 15238 with such a dial to add to my collection. Tot Ziens!

Ok so the new one looks exactly like an explorer, but it's not. So what makes an explorer an explorer?

Definitely the 1500, the new models are in my opinion overdesigned.

Not trying to spot your mistake. But the double stick markers are on the 6 and 9 markers not 3 and 6. ✌🏼
