heyo, electronic engineering major here, with regards to the clock, not all clocks are made equal. Its very possible that the original gameboys have a clock speed tolerance, making them different from their datasheets by a noticeable margin, and potentially different from each other. I haven't seen testing between individual gameboys, but I assume they may also potentially have similair offsets. Rather, I trust that the modern recreations have lower tolerance and have clock speeds more similair to whatever the gameboy was designed to run at

This is a good point and I have a feeling you are probably correct. I have one of these Funny Playing consoles and even though the timing is different my wife and I have no issues playing 2 player games like Tetris and Kirby Star Stacker using a link cable between it and a real GBC. Also links just fine with the Analogue Pocket, at least with the testing I've done.

I just wish they would make hall sensor's standard in all their controllers, or at least offer it in the SN30 Pro. I know they have one, but the whole alure of their controllers to me was that they were effectively modernized SNES/Dualshock controllers, so getting an imitation-XBONE/Pro controller from them kind of defeats the whole purpose for me.

We collectively need to move beyond the "is it emulation" debate. The only difference between approaches is that FPGA emulates the architecture of a console at a hardware instead of a software level. They're both emulating something.

There is a very significant difference between software and hardware emulation. And it's clear that you don't actually understand why people pay a premium and why companies throw so much R&D to fpga. You can argue semantics all you want, But the end result is significantly different between the two

@@8bitnation419by definition it is not simulation, it is emulation. Emulation is trying to accurately recreate how the original hardware functions, whereas simulation is merely trying to recreate the end result without being concerned about accurately recreating how the original hardware actually functions. FPGA in these use cases IS emulation, it's just hardware emulation rather than software emulation. And in actuality software emulation would be closer related to simulation than hardware emulation. There are many resources to read in regards to emulation vs simulation online, I recommend giving them a read to better understand compared to the amount of detail I can put here

I love that companies are starting to follow in Analogues footsteps with this technology. I have been saying for years that Nintendo, or even Sony, could get in on the action with real "classic" consoles that play their original media. Its an instant cash cow, and im not sure why they dont. Especially since they have the original hardware designs. It *could* but 100% accurate. But oh well. Good video!

They ARE well aware of the interest in the retro games - and I think that their preferred way is to just release the old games virtually and make them available to buy and download on the Switch (not that I own one haha). They really might not see the point in releasing different 'retro' consoles or re-releasing games in physical formats.. maybe they just want to keep the old titles 'special' this way? But hey, we can dream. Realistically they want to sell the Switch and then Switch 2. And in all honesty while there are many of us who love and prefer to play with these handheld consoles - the majority of the younger generations Z / Alpha probably won't even get what retro games are all about - "shitty graphics and not even cool fortnite dances and gambling with loot boxes?!"..

I've often wondered why Nintendo couldn't continue to perfect old system lines. Like Gameboy for instance. Make it super optimised, with a E-ink display or something, Bluetooth audio support, wireless multiplayer, improved battery performance. The thing could probably run for two to four weeks on a single charge with everything turn off or low.

Classic consoles that play original cartridges, optical discs etc. are very much *not* a cash cow. Nintendo strategizes in millions, not thousands. To even make reissuing older hardware close to viable, it’d have to print those games again which it wouldn’t do because it’d cost money and cannibalize its actual cash cow(s): Switch and its inevitable successor. What’s best for everyone would be for first parties to stay out of the classic console space (outside of that like four year period when companies were releasing limited edition mini emulation consoles), leaving the really passionate retro community to its own devices, literally and figuratively. We’re seeing things we probably wouldn’t have if Nintendo, Sony etc. were dictating direction and advancement. They have to prioritize profits and protect their IPs. The retro community has no such restrictions.

Side Note: It had “Dancing LEDs” on the top edge of the cart as a novelty. The LEDs would rapidly change colors in reaction to music being played on the built in MP3 player (though not useable in games).

I have this, and mine was absolute crap. Wish I could just return it. Will likely just give it away for free to a friend who has no gameboy at all. At least it will get them by for a time. The motherboard bricked during my first firmware update and they had to send me a replacement. The replacement worked, but I did have to wait forever after having ordered, waited, built, then sent out for replacement, waited longer, and then rebuilt. Just pathetic. Funnyplaying always seems to have QC issues. My screen has these awful looking spots on it that look like bad lamination or something and are an extreme eyesore, so much so that I hate it and refuse to play it. They take up about 30% of the display, and it's just bad. It's not noticeable on a really bright white screen, but stands out so bad on a black part of screen. Great example of this is when you go into a house in a Pokemon game such as Pokemon Crystal. The out of bounds area around the house you're in is just straight black, and that's where these terrible screen lamination issues stick out. Again, I can't stress enough how absolutely TERRIBLE my display looks. It's absolute TRASH. The clockspeed is wrong, too slow. I've tried every setting and it's just never perfect. It stands out too much to me and I just can't get past it. And lastly when booting up Dragon Warrior 3 for GBC using the GBC core, it boots, runs for a few seconds, and then crashes, giving me a jumbled up pixel mess of the screen that is supposed to say "this game can only be played on a gameboy color." Again, this is using the correct GBC core, which is unacceptable. On a positive note, it's very easy to build, the screen size and brightness is great, and the volume is incredible. This thing gets LOUD and I love that. But all of my cons listed above totally negate these pros unfortunately. This thing is hot garbage. Just get an Analogue Pocket. Despite the higher price, you will have a much much better experience as I have had, and the Analogue Pocket's display is just unmatched. That thing is an absolute beauty.

You're easily >200€ with this mod. The small differences in speed are not really relevant I would say. The biggest disadvantage is that it doesn't work with every Rom-Cartridge. Don't know if it will work with mine. If not, this is a NoGo unfortunately. Nobody wants to play with original cartridges anymore these days. And there's another big "BUT" for Europeans: It's seems to be not available in Europe. And ordering from funnyplaying in the US is quite uncomfortable and will cause additional taxes.

My guess to why they don’t assemble is the demand it would require. They can keep up with the orders currently but I feel like adding assembly would add more labor and more demand. Both of which they might not want. This way they can keep costs low on the kit and still provide a brand new gameboy for relatively cheap. They look amazing for the price I have to say

I modded my childhood GBC two months ago (with heavy help from my dad) and I'm glad I didn't know about this. I would have been too tempted, but multiple things makes this feel a bit fake. This video doesn't even talk about link cable support, and the first thing I wanted to do on the GameBoy was to complete the Gen 1 pokedex. Also, Bob says that this is cheaper than modding your GameBoy, but I disagree. I guess he's adding the price of a second hand GameBoy, which I didn't have to do.

Not being able to turn down the volume until the system is on has only been a problem twice as far as I'm aware on Nintendo systems once on the Game boy micro and then the Switch. Even the Wii U gamepad has a volume slider.

Just received mine today after what felt like a long wait. I was in-between smoke black shell or atomic purple ... So I ordered both shells. I ended up assembling with the atomic purple as it kicked in more of the nostalgia vibes. So far pros are - quality shell and materials (for most part) - speaker is super good and loud (too loud) - screen is great... I love the full screen mode -usb c rechargeable - knock off ever drive flash cart works - feels like I'm a kid again Cons - I had to file some poorly molded plastic off battery connector to get it to connect. Took 20 minutes of trying before figuring out that was stoping it. - minimum volume is still too high for me... Like I would like 3-5 options softer. I'm playing Pokemon on the lowest volume and it's still too loud to play in bed next to the wife... - ordered 2 cases but they only sent 1 set of stickers - my board is a newer revision 1.1 and there are not other firmwares. They have also changed the boot logo to a horrible funny playing logo that looks like absolute crap!!!

So if my assumption that all the mounting holes of the Funnyplaying PCB are exactly the same as an original GBC one, then this should fit in Boxypixel's metal case? they already sell that case to work with Funnyplaying's IPS screen from what I understand. get an all metal GBC game shell and fit a flash cart into it and you would have one hell of an awesome GBC I think. would just need to lightly mod the metal game cart so you can still access the micro SD card.

$10 to 20 isn't enough of a premium to have one be assembled. The amount of time it would soak up to assemble a high volume would be insane for them.

I am so happy that people are finally learning that the analogue marketing of "no emulation" is a complete lie. The advantage of it being "accurate" is imprecise wording. the advantage is timing and parallel operations. able to be designed much easier and with hardware much cheaper than the power one would need if done in software emulation. Behaviour bugs are just as common as software emulation. timing edge cases is where FPGA shines. and just like software emulation, it's only as good as the programmer. I am so happy this thing came out just as I was thinking of getting a modded GBC. saved me a lot of money.
