one of them has to go: HS1550 & HA1325 back-to-back

I knew it would eventually have to come to this. I need to simplify the quiver, maybe a New Years Resolution?? I need to let go. But before I made any crazy decisions, I had to try these two back-to-back. I think that was the only way I could make up my mind and let one of them go.

    I feel your pain brah, I have the same issue. Recently I wanted to decide between 1550 v2 and 1125. Did a flat water very light wind comparison and decided to sell the 1550, as the 1125 was just way faster and similarly easy to pump up on the foil. I put it on Craigslist and someone immediately hit me. I knew the guy, we agreed to meet at the shop where I work and he missed the appointment. The day after it was light wind and knee to waist high waves and I tried both foils again and I had so much more fun carving tight with the 1550 that I changed my mind and decided not to sell it anymore. In other words, I failed where you succeeded! (getting rid of a foil) Cheers!

    Ahhhahahha love this, thanks for sharing. I still have days I miss the 1550v2. It’s a great wing and does a lot well. One day maybe you’ll try the 1325 and see a whole different set of problems you’ll have to work through. The HA wings are just so different, but different and faster is not always better, it really comes down to how you feel out there - what gets you stoked. So ride what you like and only sell if you need to. When it comes time, you just embrace the change and ride what you got left. Again, thanks for sharing bud, I wish you an awesome weekend!

    Happy New Year Jeremy, I wish could say the same "I have too much gear....lol" Wow that 1325 certainly has some width in it, I couldn't handle that in the chop here, it would simply damage too many of my wings. Moreover I would be scared of falling on those bad boy tips! But I see many people are turning to the HA foils. In the area where I wing mostly people are using Gong foils, its a french company and very good value for money, so we don't really get to see these Armstrong foils in use apart from here on the internet. They look very good and they get great reviews.

    Hey Ed!! Awesome bud, thanks for those words and just reaching out in general! I love those clay island vids, the one winging those waves under the bridge got me sooo freaking stoked! I hope to wing out there some day :) I have 2 sets of gloves I use the most. Some 1.5mm NP gloves and for colder days, I still rock out on glacier gloves. Since the pandemic, GGs have basically doubled in price, but still worth it at $40. They usually get ripped up quick, so you may go through 2 in a season. The NP gloves are much more durable. The reason why I prefer the glacier gloves is that the wrists are looser, so do not tend to add to forearm fatigue. First thing I do is cut the Velcro off - it gets annoying when it comes undone. I’m prolly gonna get some lobster claw gloves this winter, but currently looking for some without tight wrists. Open to suggestions on that one! I’m a fan of kotatat inferno kayak mittens. Great precurved grip and very pliable. Regardless of which gloves you go with, hands can get cold, being that they are above heart level and exposed to high winds in some cases. If you ever come in from a session with numb hands that are extremely painful when thawing out, there is a great hack to beat that scenario. Go out long enough to create the hunting reaction (5-10 minutes) then come in and rewarm your hands for a few minutes. Just keeping them below heart level and shaking them will do the trick if wearing gloves. Then you go back out for 1-2 hours and when you come in, your hands won’t be frozen and hurt like shit when thawing. Learned that from this thread, and it really works. kiteforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=2387064&start=20

    @@grahamreed8443 those mitts look perfect for me, loose wrists. I’m ordering a pair tonight! And that’s totally my method for warming my hands! I think I’ve been telling people that method for over 10 years now. I call it the bee stings. Once you get over those, your hands never get cold. But sometimes they hurt so bad they make my stomach turn, but there’s comfort knowing that right around the corner you’ll have warm hands for the whole sesh. I have always preferred thin gloves, I used to love unhooking in the winter and couldn’t deal with forearm fatigue with anything over 2mm thick. I’ve talked about it in a few videos before, and I’ve been meaning to do a winter riding video covering that sort of stuff but never got around to it.

I’m holding on with fingertips mostly. Regarding that cold hand trick, the secret is to come in before the bee stings have a chance to kick in. That’s what the 10 minute timer is for. If you stay out for 15, the stings will greet you. The longer you stay out before that initial thaw, the worse it is. Ice Climbers apparently call it the screaming barfies…🤢🤮🥴😝

  • @OCEANBOUND1

    2 жыл бұрын

    Lately, I’ve been doing a +.5 or +1 shim on the 232. I’m going into the 195 territory now so I’ll be exploring the shims there. I just started playing with the mast track, tried 5.5 and it was ok. It’d be good for days I’m lit and it felt good with my current foot strap setup. I did 7 the other day but that wasn’t really what I’d call a successful sesh so I’ll be doing that again. Still dig the 8.5 though for my style. How is the 1325 chopped?! Super curious. Much different?

  • @grahamreed8443
    @grahamreed84432 жыл бұрын

    I’m digging the 1325 as well. Also sold my 2400 and 1850, with the 1325 covering those bases. Never had the 1550V2 (only V1, which I sold a while back). You should check out the Heineken Gybe for those backwind gybe conditions. May be more difficult to learn with the bigger hand wings, but they are amazing once you dial them in. My tip is to just sheet in while going into the gybe to get apparent wind around the same as windspeed. Then, do the arm movement where you check under the lower wingtip for downwind traffic, but release back hand when both hands are overhead. Then sling your front arm around side-armed. The wing will fly around your head out of view (giving full downwind vision) and swing around in front, as you complete the turn, giving you a chance to for a front handle pass and grab the back handle. This type of gybe allows the wing to maintain positive pressure throughout, so you will exit the gybe with speed and less need for foil or wing pumps. Works really well with the HA wings, especially the 1325. You can do this gybe both toeside and heelside. Regarding the wingtips, there was a guy on Instagram who took one to the armpit area and got some stitches. He has since chopped the tips and blunted them a bit and reported pretty good results. New HA stab is arriving this week. Excited to see how that thing goes with the HA wings. Happy New Year!

HA wings are great in a lot of ways, speed and breaching the wingtips are def 2 pluses for me. The 1550v2 is also fast but more forgiving. I’d say people that are in their first year would prolly get more out of the 1550v2. After that I think you start to get into rider preference, and there’s no right or wrong answer. The HA wings just threw confusion into the mix. You can def start with them, I just feel like the mid aspect wings are easier all around but you can still rip on them. Smaller foils, like smaller hand wings, will just make you tired and frustrated in the beginning unless you have adequate wind power pulling you all the time. Reading your comment again, maybe you meant hand wings? If so, I highly recommend starting big. They have so much range, and it’s so much easier having enough power all the time than being underpowered and having to pump constantly.

    Hello! Do you think the 1550 would be better than 1325 in choppy and gusty lake high wind conditions (5-25 knots)? I have the ha1325 and 925. 85m and 70f, 232 tail. I tested the 1325 with a 4,0 wing, it was stable but would sometimes kick you and go into a wobble. Im 85kg so maybe its because of the mast flexing to much. The 925 dont have that problem so I think its more stable in those conditions but too small between the gusts. Considering buying the 1550 now or maybe chopping the 1325 to reduce wingspan. What do you think?

  • @OCEANBOUND1

    @OCEANBOUND1

    2 жыл бұрын

    Sup Stefan! Interesting question. I’ve never really experienced the wobble. But I’m also on a 50 or 60 fuse so maybe that’s the difference, you being on the 70. Shims could possibly help. Oh and I’m on a 72 or 60 mast and never feel like my mast flexes, I feel like it’s stiff, but maybe the longer mast and the weight would flex it. But the 1550 is a really nice wing, more forgiving IMO so it may be a little suited for the lake. I like the 1325 cause it’s a little faster, and honestly it feels a little more stable top at all speeds. For me, having a light wind sesh when there are fast waves is the worst when your foil cannot keep up with them. But you are not getting that fast groundswell on lakes so maybe that’s just a non-issue for you, thus the 1550 could be better suited for you. It’s not a slow wing, I feel like it turns better… it doesn’t suck, you’ll like it. Trust me, it was hard decision to sell It!

    @@OCEANBOUND1 I will give the 1325 another chance since so many seems to like it. I thought you have experienced the kick from the wing tips picking up energy, I Saw a YT review and he was talking about it (Oskar J). I have an hour drive to a wave spot but then I have the 925 as my go to and the 1325 would then be my super light wind weapon. Lake winging would maybe not be my priority anyway, just doing some testing here at home bacause of the season (Im in Sweden). Also have a 60 fuse and will play around with the settings. I also think that maybe the 1325 is not designed for high Speed winging in strong winds and chop.

    I really like my 1550V2, it turns so well. I trimmed about 1 cm off each end to try to soften the effects of tip breaches but have not intentionally breach tested it yet. I am interested in trying a 1325 since I have fallen in love with the 925. My dilemma is whether I should sell the 1250 as I don’t see a lot of use in its future winging or prone foiling. Thanks for your insight.

    Sup Rob, happy new year! I’d chop the 1550 but I need the money 😂👍 let me know if you ever do push the breaching with it, I’d love to know how the chopping changes things there. I’m in the same boat, I personally do not use the 1250 anymore and I always think it feels slow no matter how I shim it. I do happen to love it on my SUP, so I could keep it for that. I just haven’t SUP’d much this fall so I haven’t tried any of the HA wings except maybe the 1125 when I first got it. But why wouldn’t the 925 be my new go-to for SUP as well? It’s a hard decision! If someone wants it, I’ll prolly just sell it. Gotta find that 8m I’ve been waiting months for!

    @@OCEANBOUND1 Hey Jeremy, I have the 2400 and the 1550v2, debating the 1325 or 925 for my next wing, thoughts? Still pretty new to the sport, just sorted out staying upwind all the time and getting a few jibes on foil before the lakes froze over here. 180 to 185 lbs. Thanks!

    @Christopher Curran really interesting question. I loved that wing when I got it, because it was the fastest wing I had at the time and I needed that. But now I have the 725, 925, 1125, and 1325… so my plan is to sell the 1125 cause it’s now an awkward spot on the quiver that all the other ones cross over on. For my weight and everything, the 925 is THE sweet spot in the quiver now. I still dig the 1125, and to a heavier rider it would prolly be their version of by 925, but if I had to get rid of one, the 1125 is the first to go now. Hope that helps. Do you have one or thinking about getting one?

    @@OCEANBOUND1 haha yeah I’m in the same boat on the 1125. I’m keeping mine for the summer sea breeze downwinders we have in the 15-20mph range. The 925 isn’t quite enough for the small bumps. Maybe the 1325 will kick the 1125 out for good though in those conditions. We’ll see next summer. I’ve been tracking all my sessions using waterspeed. I’m not doing it just for the gps data, but also the ‘equipment’ fields and notes it lets you fill in. Nice reference point for those frantic rigging moments when you are trying to remember that magic setup a few weeks back for similar conditions. It also has an export feature for spreadsheets. I’m going to geek through my data to see which foil and wing sizes were most used etc.

    Hi Jeremy, did you sad (3:50) you have your mast at the 8.5 position? Is this because of the chopped 232 or do you use chimes? I am on the same setup but haven't chopped the tail and my mast is at the 5 to 5.5 position.

    Sup Jens! I do ride my mast at 8.5. Why? Cause my buddy got the same board a month or so before me and tried a bunch of stuff out and found that worked best for him. So I started with that and never changed it cause it works. Next time I ride, I’ll change it up! I think I said in this video I was using a chopped tail, but that was a mistake I forgot to correct, it was an non-chopped 232 v1

    @@OCEANBOUND1 Hi Jeremy, after a few weeks using the HS1550V2 and the 195 tail prone foiling, I can say I love the 195 tail. I started off with no shim and ended up with the red one. I use the same setup for winging but most of the time with the HS1250. Like to try the HA1325 not sure how good it is for prone foiling which is imported for me as I don't like to buy a new foil just for winging. Have you ever tried to prone foil the HA1325?
