OCEANBOUND

OCEANBOUND

I'm no pro. I'm not semi-pro. I'm a stoked watersports lover.

My original intention was to explore all things that draw us to the OCEAN. What makes it beautiful. What inspires us. How we use it to play. How we harness it. How we can protect it...

I still plan to cover all these as I continue to document my journey and progression on the water. But I'm now drawing inspiration by constantly getting out there, and pushing myself to learn out on the water and also telling stories through editing. And through you, who is also drawn to the water. I've already met so many people who have reached out, made a ton of new friends, and it's been so inspiring to me that it feels natural to keep going. I'm not here to be famous, I'm here to progress.

The OCEAN... it binds us together, and we are bound to it. We are forever heading back to it. Join me on the journey, because deep down you feel the same. May you be as inspired by my story as I'm inspired by yours. Thank you. WE ARE OCEANBOUND.

    You described my thought just in the first 60 seconds. And nice to hear your progression and tha the others comment that you nailed it .. Lately we have so many no wind days that I think hard to go down that road .. but man .. a lot of new gear especially as I have Naish foils and therefore will hae to be a mast and everything.. so I am on the point what should I think of....Thanks a lot for your video and your thoughts

    IMO volume isn't as important as length and width, but volume has always been irrelevant for me because I always rode a 70L sup. Personally too much volume is hard to engage and sink into the water but I am 165lbs. For stance a modified "T" stance works very well for me. Front foot partially parallel/inline to the rail and back foot perpendicular/already in surfstance. You can use the front foot, more specifically your toes, to push the board forward and sinking it down. This is a "surge" like technic that SUP racers use. Paddling, this is something I have had to fortunate luck to setup clinics with some of the best SUP paddlers in the world and over the years learned a lot from them. Hinging at the hips, planting the paddle and keeping the form of an "A" then driving your hips forward generates a ton of power. I see a lot of people paddling with their shoulders and arms + creating splashes when your paddle enters and exits the water is inefficient. Also if your blade goes past your heels, there is no power and you are pulling yourself off the board - very inefficient. When not windy, I SUP foil my DW board to continue practicing. I know not everyone has that opportunity but if you live near waves, its such a good way to practice.

    This is awesome, thanks bud! I’m pretty much using a modified T and it’s working pretty good, although my back foot has a slight angle, but using my toes to push down on the rail on that side. I’m not super versed on paddling, but I’m finally at the point where I can pay attention to it more. I was pretty into crew for 6 years so I’m really tuned into stuff like having a good clean catch, what parts of the stroke I have more power in, and efficiency in general. So I’m really into that sort of stuff. I’m stoked I’m at the point where I can pay more attention to it. And yeah, it’s been really flat and not so windy on my days off, but as soon as we get more bumps I look forward to riding more way out there. Thanks again, such an awesome comment. I wish you an awesome weekend!

    That was sooo much fun to watch! Thank you. This is exactly the journey I went trough the last year! Each and every step (and rabbit hole). I was smiling through the entire video. One thing though - with your technique you should be able to do 5-10km dw runs easily. "Forget" flat water paddle ups. Concentrate on the "bumpy" paddle ups. In the amazing James Casey course that is one of the main messages: you dont need to be able to flat water paddle up - at all! you need to be able to get up in the bumps. From there you just do what you do when you flag out winging. Cheers

    Really good review, agree with everything you said, just sold my 1675 after I got my 1350, which I love. I had much less hate towards the 1675, but I am pushing 200 lbs. so maybe that helped? I actually kinda liked the 1675, until the 1350.Picking up my 7m CWC tomorrow, replacing my V3 8m, pretty stoked, rode a buddies and the weight and handling felt like a 6m but with as much power has my old 8. And stoked about the CWC!! FOne just sent me a 6m CWC with hard handles and I took it out on one sesh and I loved it. def recommend the hard handles for the big ones. I can get out in less with the 1180, but I'm really not super into going out in wind that low. 13-14 is my cutoff these days, otherwise I'll paddle. I def agree with the wing size as well. that's why I haven't used that 7m Ventis in 9 months, the dw board and a HA foil make smaller 5m sizes work. this was my second attempt at doing speed trials on these foils, it's it's really hard to do speed runs and push limits when you are kinda underpowered. so that's why I brought the 7m to push speed, and I'm glad I did! thanks bud, I wish you an awesome weekend!

    Great break down, enjoyed it, thanks! Just swapped the 1675 for the 1350 and I agree on your points. I also feel that the PM795 is not stiff enough to really handle the bigger APF for me at 172lbs/78kg, especially with the 202 tail or in turbulent water. And I’m also amazed by the different sections along the span of the 1350, it seems very sophisticated and an evolution of the first two APFs. I wonder if I can pump longer distance and/or time with the 1350? What do you think?

  • @OCEANBOUND1

    awesome, thank YOU! interesting you don't think of the 795 as stiff enough. I haven't experienced that but I'll totally try to notice if I can feel that in my next sessions. totally agreed, the evolution is real. the 1350 is kinda it's own thing, with characteristics of both it's the bigger APF siblings and HA cousins. I totally think I can pump it better, mostly cause the 1675 is so awkward that I tend to make a mistake on it, where the 1350 is a little more natural and as I get more tuned to it I think things will be easier to keep the pump going. looking pretty flat in the next week or so around here so there will be lots of paddling. thanks bud, I wish you an awesome weekend!

I also love the 1350/220 for riding swell (in the gorge) with a wing, instant 50% improvement in my ability in that discipline.Thanks Jeremy another really helpful video!

    awesome bud! I'm def into the 202 now, but I needed to use the 220 for a while to get to the point where the 202 got unlocked. lol. but def good once you are up and pumping. I think they developed it for dock starting and the apf so maybe it's more for flatwater party tricks but it's def nice and easy when practicing the leg pumping!

    Dude, awesome job on the paddle ups and pumping progression. It's really relevant to me right now, I've got flat water out my window and have made the initial steps but having never been a SUP guy I've got a long ways to go yet. Super interesting hearing your opinions on the tails, I've got the 180 and 220 and have been wondering if there is a better choice. I'm currently failing with the 1675 and 220 but I know it's not the foil/stab, I can barely stand on my 100L. I just need to put in the time. The 1350 is awesome in light wind, definitely a lot quicker than the 1675 but still gets up and going in almost nothing. I've been having a ton of fun sailing it, can't wait to see what you do with it and how it works for you. Thanks for the inspiration!

    sup bud! good to hear you are moving in this direction! it's a trip, and I'm starting to really get addicted to the physical challenge of it all. so if anything, the one thing I hope to impart on people new to this is that it takes time and lots of effort, progress is slow and can be frustrating but just look for the little wins everywhere. you need to build stamina, power, speed and technique... it all takes time and won't come over night. you are lucky you have flatwater so close to home! every 20 min paddle sesh is worth it. as far as the stab goes, I think you are good with the 220! I did start to see a difference when I started using that, right as I was starting to get up on foil. the 202 seems to be better for me NOW that I'm up and pumping, but it frustrated me a ways back. I paddled the 180 again yesterday and I def prefer the 220 or 202 over that on the flat water, but mostly cause the pumping is just a little faster on the 180 and it's nice to have a slightly slower cadence. as long as you have it, I'd stick to the 1675 until you start to lift, and the 1350 just needs and extra paddle or two more. I haven't winged the 1350 yet, I almost did yesterday. I will soon, I'm interested to see how fast I can get it to go. keep me in the loop on your progress! I wish you an awesome weekend!

    I wonder how the new HA 1180 would compare? I debate between it and the 1350 for super light downwinding

  • @OCEANBOUND1
    @OCEANBOUND114 күн бұрын

    so I've used the 1180 maybe 10 times surfing and winging, and I've tried three times to paddle it up - twice on the flat and once on a cray day in bumps that were not steep enough. my technique is getting better, and I'm looking forward to the day I can paddle that up and make it work. I've been saying "I can't wait to get rid of the 1675" so I've been trying hard to dial everything in on that in hopes that I can soon unlock the 1180. then the 1350 comes in, it sits right in the middle, where I just happen to be progression-wise. so once up, the 1180 is great. good pumper, good glide, and decent turning for it's size. the 1350 is a great pumper and glider, turning is the sacrifice. so if you are using a wing, I'd say 1180. but if paddling, and still kinda new to that, the 1350 is great. I hope that helps. LMK what you end up getting!

    @@OCEANBOUND1 Cool thanks for the details. Still leaning 1180 I think. I'm only 68kg (so it should be a little easier for me than it would be for you), and my technique is half decent (I can downwind the cabrinha 1050 but just barely (I eventually make a mistake and never connect more than 2-3 minutes at a time)) Just looking for something that has better lowend than that cabrinha 1050... just hard to say if its enough for me to flatwater start. I totally agree with you that regardless that if its a party trick or not, its still great training for the legs and to dial in pump technique, so flatwater startability is a must for me.

    Hi Jeremy your videos never disappoint . Would you have any advise I have been wing foiling for over a year on Armstrong ma foils find all great kit but find pitch control hard . I have a 70 fuselage 235 stab . I put a blue shim in that made it 5% better but still up and down and breach a lot . Should I put the mast from centre more forward so I have more pressure on front foot . Help

  • @OCEANBOUND1
    @OCEANBOUND114 күн бұрын

    sup bud! interesting you find pitch control an issue with the 70 fuse. I've only tried one once and it was a waaaay smoother ride, slower to turn and seemed more stable as far as pitch goes. so it seems like something else going on here, but shims on the 70 could be a lot different than the 60 I ride. less shim should stabilize it and point your nose a little more down. I guess let me ask you... what board are you on? where are you in the mast track now? and is breaching your main problem? also, have you tried other foils or only Armstrong MAs?

    This is another interesting video from you. I have to say that to me, this is a confirmation that too much aspect ratio spoils the fun. It was interesting to hear and see you comparing the HA and the SK8 because I've been comparing my own latest creation to the SK8 and my creation before that to the new Armstrong starter foil. But when I looked at even the thin SK8 tip thickness clearly shown in your comparison, my wingtips are not only so much thinner, but so much pointier. Really, I would not like to be sliced by my own foil. And then I looked the thick tips of your thick HA chopped Armstrong HA and I thought "Oh no!..." and I wasn't at all surpried to hear you liked the better agility, but I was surprised that you didn't express any view on the feel of less area and the loss of the small tip flex. But then you described others raves about their own chop experiences and I thought that maybe I understood the psychology of your own positivity about the experience! My reckoning is that wingtips are about wingtip vortices control and the rest of the foil is about drag vs stall speed compromises. Now I am moulding my second copy of my latest design, waiting for the slow cure epoxy, a slightly more accurate moulding process closer to my actual design and I can't wait for spring and after work sessions again but I'm not sure what can be my next design challenge because I like my last two designs so much already. I have contemplated my own range including fuselage too but the day job brings in the money and to go commercial is not really my skill set, I am much better at designing in many fields than at the repetetive nature of running a business.

  • @OCEANBOUND1
    @OCEANBOUND114 күн бұрын

    sup bud! glad yr digging this one too! I do think wingtips have a lot to do with the ride, because things can vary a lot from shape to shape. but thickness and flex have a lot to do with it as well. lots of people are gravitating to thinner, more efficient foils these days. I take it they are trying to make them as stiff as possible, but thin means more flex. I like it, it's springy. and the higher aspect ratio, the more flex you will probably see. thinner and higher aspect ratio isn't always a bad thing. the new EagleX or like the Code foils are great examples of high aspect rations that can still turn and perform. but you do kind of learn after a while ways to make specific foils turn better... so I do think a lot comes down to skill. and you mention drag vs stall seed compromises and whatnot... it's been pretty interesting to see what companies have been evolving to in the past year or so. Armstrong has the new HAs which are much flatter in the middle, that's glide and pump, and the wingtips then are angles down more farther out, but that still gives it a nice turn and a little more stability. they have maximized everything (you didn't mention camber, but that's a big change to theirs) that their foils do except it took some speed out of the top end. I tried hard to push the speed on my 580 yesterday and only got it to 25mph, where my MA800 has no camber and I can get it to go faster. man this stuff is so interesting. I'm jealous you are making foils... that's the ultimate learning experience right there. people like me, just have to try and tune in to as many foils as possible to study their habits. i love a good challenge. hope all is well bud, I wish you an awesome weekend!

    @@OCEANBOUND1 Thanks, Looks Like I have to wait at least another week for wind but every morning it's a little lighter. Meanwhile my annoyance at not getting out on the water converts to curiosity about what else I can make. I have a very small under camber concave on some of my wings but I usually fair it out with filler on the 3D printed models before I get around to making moulds off them. Anyway, designing can be part of the experience, very nice to ride my own gear but I have nothing on your level of skill wingsurfing and you set an example for a large proportion of us foilers that pushes all of us a bit more.
