Tokyo, Japan, May 18, 2016 - Put simply, this was volleyball at its very best.
A gripping five-set thriller and a home team victory out of nowhere, one of the most incredible comebacks amid drama not even Steven Spielberg would dare imagine.
Japan beat Thailand 3-2 (20-25, 25-23, 23-25, 25-23, 15-13) in a pulsating match lasting nearly three hours.
Thailand knew it’s chances of qualifying hinged on tonight’s match, and in the first set they played accordingly.
They out-jousted, out set, out received and out played the home team from the first point, opening up an early 5-1 lead, and then refusing to buckle when Japan kept climbing back into the set.
At 14-15 Japan took the lead briefly, but Thailand fought back to turn 15-16 into 18-16, and then 21-18, 24-19 and eventually 25-20.
The digging of Thailand, led by Libero Piyanut Pannoy, was a sight to behold, with wave after wave of Japanese attacks blunted.
Setter Nootsara Tomkom was replaced midway through the set, but Pornpun Guedpard proved she is more than a useful replacement for the highly rated Nootsara.
And Japan started making errors, and lots of them. By the end of the first set the error count was 11 to five.
The match was off to a fifth set, the first five setter of the week, and befitting of the epic duel that had been unfolding for more than two hours.
The fifth set, by any measure, was one of the most incredible sets of volleyball most fans will ever see.
Thailand had the match, and possibly a ticket to Rio, wrapped up at 9-3. But what unfolded next was one of the most amazing self-destructions in sport.
With all the momentum, the Thai team and their coaching bench somehow managed to concoct a way to lose the unlosable set.
The ill-discipline brought with it a heavy price for Thailand; the first red card came when they were leading 12-7. But instead of concentrating on sealing the game, the team became distracted and continued to argue with officials.
The second red card was inevitable; it came when Thailand was trailing 12-13, and virtually gifted the match to Japan.
For the hosts, Saori Sakoda was incredible all night, finishing with a game-high 24 points, while Thailand captain Pleumjit Thinkaow led the way for the visitors with 21 points.
The tears the Thai players cried as they left the court told the story; the chance to go to their very first Olympics had been dealt a severe blow.
Japan coach Masayoshi Manabe - “It was a very tough match. We survived by the breadth of our skin.”
“Thailand makes few mistakes and has quick combinations. Our serves didn't break them easily and that is why we had to struggle.”
“We expected to have struggles. That is why I put in four Olympic medalists in the third set.”
“I have decades in volleyball and it is very rare to have a game like this. We won in five sets and it gave a boost to the team.”
Thailand coach Radchatagriengkai K. “I would like to thank my players who gave their all tonight. We will give our best in the rest of the matches. These players are my heroines.”
“In my life something like this has never happened. I have been a volleyball coach for 20 years and never saw this.”
“I asked why the touch panels were not displaying member changes and I asked for a clarification and I was given a red card.”
“Then I asked again why the tablets were not displaying the members and got the second red card. It was very unfair to the Thai team. We play with sportsmanship. This judgment was not right. The match is over now and we have to accept the result.”
“The system should be reconsidered. We could not change players even though my players were in the changing area.”
Japan captain Saori Kimura - “Today I didn't play too well. As a team we were in a losing pattern. Thailand was moving the game.”
“We believed in ourselves until the end.”

😂😂 This match is the stigma of the Japanese team for life. Because of the conspiracy to stuff the money to the referee by filing a yellow card and a red card to cut the morale of the Thai national team that brought the previous score. And finally, add 1 point for the Japanese team for free, which is impossible to want the Thai team to lose. And their own national team will competed at the Olympics in Brazil. It's a shame for Japanese volleyball and that of the world richer nations can shove kickbacks to the umpires to side their country in the most disastrous way in volleyball history ever played. 🤣🤣

The thai coach tries to challenge smth that he had no right to challenge, the challenge got rejected and since he did the same thing in the 4th set the thai team got a delay warning (yelllow card). He then takes a time out and continues to yell at the second ref after he did already argue with him, so he got a red card for rude conduct ( at least i suppose that was the reason), if you wonder now where the yellow card for rude conduct was, it has been given to the coach in the 4th set...soo everything according to the rules, where is the conspiracy?

@@schwebor 🤣🤣 LOL!!! What rude behavior? What part of your brain do you think? When the Thai team is leading score? What is he rude for? The reason he protested was because he wanted a challenge to watch ball. But the referee refused to see and cut the points of the Thai team without legitimacy as well as giving the Japanese team a free score of 2 points, what is it for? Everyone around the world saw. Only you are blind, you have to ask the Japanese volleyball team and the Volleyball Association. How much money they have been stuffed to the referees for this time. In order to cheat the Thai team's score for himself to be able to go to the Olympics until the referee believes and does not follow and united to cheat the Thai national team up to two points for reliable reasons. 😂😂

How could the ref didn’t accept their request for substation when there was clearly a problem? It was really frustrating to watch if you actually understood what happened. The chance for the Thai team to qualify for the Rio Olympics was ruined by the biased judgment of the first referee. Yea but with delay stuff the rules are pretty straight forward. The thai coach got himself into a hole by abusing the challenge system to get the first delay warning. (2 times he did an incorrect challenge). If he had not done this there wouldnt have been a delay red at 13:12. As for his conduct: he was over the top whith his conduct for 5 sets. The ref shoukd have given him a red earlier.

The first challenge, the Thai coach said that the Japanese setter put her hand over the centre line during the rally at 2:44 and at 3:03 - but she clearly didn't. The coach was wrong - he should have politely asked the 2nd ref, but instead he was rude and unprofessionally interupted the game. This was very bad for the Thai girls who lost momentum. I don't know why he was red-carded the 2nd time - maybe interupting play by talking with the 2nd referee?

Must have a reason why the Thai Coach got red card. Look at 02:47 the ball was out very far from the line and he tried to make a challenge for no sense. At 07:28 one more time, Japan got the point 13 very clearly and Thai team tried to argue again. That's not a sportsmanship. I agree red card is too much for warning and point 14 is unacceptable but I cannot agree Japan was weaker in 5th set. Japan got point 8,9,10,11,12,13,15 very effectively. Remember Japan is famous for defense and fightback. They have discipline practice and team spirit. And Thai fan should accept that Japan is a stronger team. One match doesn't say anything about the ability. We have to look at the process and the development of both teams in history. The true stronger team is showed in the ranking of FIVB and OLYMPIC medalist results.

@Jodi L that yes the coach was having a bad behavior but man, it's the 5th set, I don't know what happen before, but why not yellow card? Why giving the other team a point just doesn't make sense

I'm a Thai person who likes the Japanese team very much. Since this incident I have been disappointed like never before. i cry so hard and never watch Japanese volleyball again , when I just saw the name of the Japanese national team. no matter which country they compete with. I'm too hurt to look at them.
