I raced a 70 W30 back in the day! It was amazing how fast it really was. So many 442's were ordered by Olds dealer new car managers that had NO IDEA what made a car fast...so many got ordered with every power option they could pack on and the worst gear ratio they could get. Also, nobody knew [save a few] that with an Olds, you got a better cam with a manual trans not just 442 but Cutlass 350 as well. A 70 350 Cutlass with a 4speed and 3.91 gear will leave you shaking your head as to how close it will run compared to a automatic 442 with a 3.23 gear and a 455. [non w car] If you are Lucky enough to find a 1970 442 W30 Hardtop post car, that being the lighter F85 Body, with a 4speed, and no a/c or power brakes, it will have the 328 degree cam and if it has the 3.91 or dealer installed 4.33 gear in it...it is Hands down an ANIMAL! The only Magazine that ever tested one like this was a Rag out on the east coast''High Performance Cars Magazine"" that with headers and slicks ran an 11.91 1/4 mile and still could not get all the traction to the ground. Only 147 true''W car's in this configuration were made so it's no wonder they are just now getting the respect they deserved in the day. Were still Racing a 455 in a 87 cutlass today!

Great video. When I was 16 my boss at the grocery store got himself a 442 and a toupee. The car was awesome. The toupee not so awesome.

Good stuff. Very entertaining. Had a friend that had a 1967 Dodge Coronet convertible with a 383 and 4spd. That car was fast, it turned like an aircraft carrier, we had to throw out an anchor to make it stop. That is why I drive a Corvette, they turn, stop and go fast, very fast.

Thanks for giving the 442 the recognition they deserve. It's too bad you weren't able to drive a 1970. 455's are torque monsters, I own a '70 442 and it's a blast to drive. BTW, those seats are not leather.

Yup, I had a 72 gto a few years ago. Completely restored and with bias plys it was scary to drive with manual steering and a four speed. It went wherever it wanted. I was too afraid to look at the tac or change lanes. I through something radials on and that made it a whole new car and I could do those things
