I love this! I had a lab who was my best help with other dogs. Myself and my lab were in training with a trainer for over 500 hrs. Our Trainor also worked with the elephants at the Hogle zoo in Salt Lake City. I had a tragic loss and my lab was my therapy. The bond between me and that dog was incredible. I was so fortunate because that dog was intuitive to both people and animals. I fostered dogs at the time and he just knew what an unstable animal needed. I remember one time, I had a foster schnauzer who was highly reactive to movement. The schnauzer was being snappy and way too much misdirected energy to people walking by in the house. My lab was a big boy, 110 lbs. He was lying down and the schnauzer was being just crazy. He actually turned to bite my lab. The lab just lifted his front leg and pinned the schnauzer. The lab was so calm about the matter. Besides pinning the schnauzer with his front leg, he didn't move. He stayed lying down. The lab kept the schnauzer there until the schnauzer gave up and relaxed. Then my lab let him up. He did that type of thing often. I really miss him.

Joel, I have had this convo recently with the amazing trainer we worked with in utah and Koco Garcia whose leash course I utilized. I respect so much that you all can admit that not every dog can be "fixed." We can improve and soften behaviors, strengthen bonds, etc. But not every behavior can be eradicated completely. I have spent the last year feeling like a failure because although my dog is a TON better in every sense of the word, she still insists on barking at stuff on the leash in our neighborhood (not at the park, not down town, just on our daily walks). If I only took success as being "well she hasn't stopped barking on a leash sometimes," then I would have quit by now. But the fact that she now knows how to just chill out without being told, that she's not attacking my other dogs, that she has actually bonded to my other dogs, that she respects 95% of what I ask her to do without issue, etc is really the bigger picture.

I meet a lot of people in the park, and I started stepping into dogs jumping up too. I mean I already did it with my dogs and ones I know, but now also with unknown ones. Not even so much on purpose, it's just become a habit. And usually people are like 'oh thank you, my dog needs that.' Couple days ago this lady made a huge scene, how I could just step away or do something else. And I just stood there like, 'uhm, you think it's okay for him to jump up to me like that?' 'No, but you don't have to be mean about it.' Meanwhile the dog is still at my feet looking up, waggling its tail.

Wow, I know some Karens will lose their shit about the smallest things, but all you did was literally just ever so slightly push back against a pushy dog. That will have been even gentler on him than other dogs are when simply play-fighting and having fun. The lady calling that "mean" sounds like a nutjob.

I had a friend who had grown up with hunting dogs - Vizlas. One day a man brought his friendly but untrained lab over and the dog tried to jump on my friend. He drew his knee up towards his chest and blocked the dog. The owner had a fit "don't you ever kick my dog!". It wasn't a kick it was a block - his knee didn't go towards the dog at all. I thought there'd be a fight between the two men but luckily the owner just walked away, still angry. Probably didn't fight because the dog didn't mind the block at all - she was just as friendly and happy as before but didn't jump up on him again.

The heck with binge-watching Netflix series! I have been binge-watching Joel's videos since I found his channel. I have 2 little dogs but they are leash reactive. I have been following the method so religiously that my 6yo Pomchi, who has selective hearing, is 95% better at coming due to the come get method, and my new girl, a ??? JRT mix is much better on the walk. I do use a baby prong on her because she is like a ping pong ball if I don't. I'll just fade it out like he suggests fading out the gentle leader. I have zero interest in taking them to dog parks, but I would love to find a couple folks near me with good dogs to walk with so I can better socialize my girls. It's a struggle in a rural area. Off-leash, my girls are 100% perfect with other dogs, so funny, but they act like little badasses on leash. Thank you so much Joel for all this information!! Love this channel!!

So annoying when people say "small dog syndrome", there are small toy/lap dogs and pet bred terrier 'types' that may fit that category BUT there are also smaller dogs out there that do not fit that category. One such breed is the Patterdale Terrier (there are also other similar breeds) that certainly do not have small dog syndrome, they are still born and bred hunters and they mean it. My daughter's rescue Patterdale bitch goes for some larger dogs and does not back down if it comes toward her. She is one effective protection dog against unexpected sudden movement toward my daughter too from people.

@@triciawade8634 I'm autistic and I've sometimes wondered if cats and dogs could have a similar condition. Maybe not the exact same thing, but similar symptoms. Brain disorders in non-human species do fascinate me, of course they are tragic when they have a negative impact on the animal. But the brain is such an incredible thing, almost like a computer that builds itself out of meat, that the things that happen when it goes wrong are even more astonishing to witness than when it goes right. It can be hard to definitively label an animal with anything more specific than 'a bit of a weirdo' - my old cat once spending several minutes staring and deciding to jump onto my mum's plate of toast on her lap, and once being spotted wandering around the house with mysteriously acquired cobwebs stuck all over his butt and tail, and sitting with his tail in his water dish and so on, comes to mind lol.

Many years ago some family friends of mine had a cat. They had the cat for years and years and it was a nice, normal cat. Then one night it attacked them while they slept. Ripped into them and could not be calmed down at all. It was like it had become completely feral overnight. They ended up putting it down. The vet thought it might have been a virus in it’s brain, or possibly a tumor, but they couldn’t afford the necropsy to find out. It wasn’t rabies because the cat was up to date on its shots.

Nothing will beat one dog’s correction to another. I work at a doggie daycare (def breeds a lot of annoying dog behaviors) and we have so many dogs that no matter how many times you correct them, they won’t listen but will instead get shut down really quickly by another dog. I won’t let dogs get beat up lol but if they get snapped at after pestering a dog then I praise the dog who gave the correction because that behaviour isn’t acceptable for play. I currently have a 6 month standard poodle puppy and he’s literally the happiest dog ever but he’ll pester dogs and think it’s a game when they correct him. Obviously he’s still a puppy but I really wouldn’t care if he gets in the wrong dog’s face and gets beat up lol because he needs to learn.

This!!!!!!!!! We have a puppy who is almost a year old, and whenever we meet a dog owner who understands how dogs interact, it’s always so helpful because my puppy gets reminded how to play with other dogs correctly. I love seeing dogs correct and teach my dog, it’s something that I don’t intuitively understand, so I’m incredibly thankful when those dogs teach him and the owners let them do it.

Hey Joel! My dog is the one who went at you that day. I guess he's famous for something 😂. He was a pretty bad case by any measure but I need to clarify a couple of things: 1) I *did* tell you that he didn't let people approach him (or me ) frontally. That's why he had the muzzle on because Prince was behind the deck fence and not in danger of being bit. I would never omit information as important as that. 2) Several things were going on with him: he was found alone under a bush at the age of 5 mos (unknown past but bearing all the traits of an unsocialized pup); I am not sure what kind of treatment he got at the rescue organization; he was relatively new to me; his exercise requirements were not being met. Do you remember how 'amped up' he was as he ran around your yard? I had given up on trainers after that embarassing experience (sorry 😳) but I fortuitously ran into a trainer who got him into the dog park after one day! He used an Ecollar and some other methods on him for a couple of hours and I now take him to the dog park several times a week as well as to the 'people park' and he is a rock star! I still have a leash and 'half muzzle' on him at the dog park but he meets many dogs, wags his tail, play bows and initiates limited chases. Of course I will always have to keep an eye on him but he has made incredible progress!

Wednesday of this week, there was a new client that i took on, that in the message thread forgot to mention that their pitbull had a bite history, they only said aggression, which i always take into consideration. Fast forward to yesterday and the first time entering the home by myself without the humans, the dog literally went to attack me - If i didn't have the skillset I have there would have been a bite 100%. I had a session over the weekend with the humans in the home but it wasn't enough, that dog might need to be in a entirely new home to manage the fearful aggression and even then might not ever fully recover considering his history and age (was over 10yrs old). I would have never entered the home alone if I knew that. The humans were unwilling to cooperate after the fact & I have to consider it a fail as well, even though I did everything I could there are sometimes things we have to accept, thank you for sharing, I needed to hear this today, Joel.

That sounds like a fascinating watch, I've heard that dogs who suddenly attack without bothering to display any warning behaviours are the most dangerous kind, even more than the ones who snarl and bark up a storm and act intimidating before resorting to violence. They're basically not bothering to follow dog etiquette at all, might even have neurological issues.

Bosco is the most amazing dog ive ever seen. i wouldve said that terrier was super fearful but after he went for bosco after the cornering, its clearly not fear, its just pure aggression. - also the amount of aggression control on bosco where hes NEVER pushed to the point of actually causing damage or going for pain is so impressive. this is what i want from my future dobies. i need a personal protection dog with that level of control and obedience.

I am just now starting with me 2yo rescue pittie, she is overall a sweet girl and I am going to make her better by watching your videos and BEING CONSISTENT DAILY! She just was cleared of heartworm so I have no more excuses. Once we get the basic manners down then I need to work on her separation anxiety and will search to see if you have any for that. I rescued a 4 year old male, black and rust, beautiful, natural ears and docked tail. He was the chillest dog I've ever met and was also my first Doberman. He was the type where he always tried to avoid confrontation with another dog but never backed down either. He was great at showing his strength by not biting but with strong posturing, correcting the dog's behavior, and just standing up for himself. He got cornered one day by two other male family dogs, a small pit bull and dutch shepherd mix. The dutch shepherd started growling at him as Roscoe, my Dobe, kept inching away but then just snapped and barked loudly at the shepherd, placing a paw over him and the shepherd backed down, causing the pit to back up too. I let it happen because I knew he wasnt going to bite, just show that he's stronger. I miss him every day.

I really enjoy watching your channel. I have done some dog training in the past and had a smallish female Standard Poodle with an attitude. If she had gone to a home with inexperienced handlers she would have very aggressive, possibly dangerously so. I got her at eight weeks old. It took a good three months to force her to accept that her paws could be handled by anyone. Handling a paw resulted in having her grab your hand with her mouth. She got rolled, pinned down and firmly verbally reprimanded. This had to be repeated multiple times (she was very stubborn, dominant,) in a row until she gave up. We did this daily until she finally realized she wasn't going to win. My friend who is an excellent groomer said she has only seen about three other dogs so dominant in her career. This ended up with a social, outgoing bitch. When we told them that she was a handful as a puppy they didn't believe us.

Just found your channel and Im so glad I did.You don't sugar coat anything ,or claim to be a great fixer of unwanted dog behaviours and believe me Ive watched plenty dog training videos.I have a 3 year old Border Collie,my 4th collie and as a pup he was a nightmare, the complete opposite of my previous 3.I actually considered rehoming him,but the love for him was there and I didnt want to give up on him,so I plodded on,never was aggressive with him in any way,but he tried my patience many times, and when you have a lot of love for a dog and yet he still shows aggression toward you ,it can become too much.He is off working farm dogs, highly intelligent, and I knew that underneath his aggressive side(snapping, not puppy snapping) and showing of teeth if he didnt get his own way ,that there was a good dog in there,at least I hoped there was ...So I persevered, and so glad and thankful that I did, because the alternative didnt bear thinking about, whether it was rehoming him or the other worst case scenario.Him and I have come a long way,and he has become a loving, loyal and very protective of me,family dog, still with a few quirks as I call them lol,but a lovely boy.Great in a dog park when off leash, ignores other dogs and people, and focuses only on me,on lead is a different story,in the past he'd lunge at both people and dogs, now just other dogs,so Im working on that one still.....thx for your videos,Im finding them really helpful and looking forward to more

I am so happy that I found this U tube video. I have learnt a lot after watching almost all your videos till date. The best thing s I like in your videos are you do not pretend that you can correct every canine. There are some canines, that cannot be helped, no matter how much one tries. I like and try and follow your ideas . It is necessary to correct a canine behavior.. if it’s not behaving in an appropriate manner.Thankyou so much for making such videos

I remember those days. Had a Min Pin that barked so loud, he and the owner were outside the room for the first 2 series of 6 week classes. Gotta give her credit though, she stayed for multiple courses so by the 3rd course, we could actually get them in the back stock room with the other dogs and people. We are still friends to this day, long after that dog has passed. They had me watch the dog any time they went on vacation, even after we both moved away. We would meet midpoint between the places so I could pet sit for them. Totally different dog with me and was fine with all my dogs. Miss him actually and am sure they do too. Nothing like a feisty Min Pin, right!?! Had 2 of my own as well - at the same time as the guest Min Pin. Thank you for the trip down memory lane Joel.
