One Of The Largest Sears Ever - Silver Spring, MD *Now Closing*

Ойын-сауық

One Of The Largest Sears Ever - Silver Spring, MD. Enjoy a tour around this gigantic Sears store that originally was 2 floors. With the current state of affairs for Sears, they have been struggling to even make 1 floor look full. Finding an open Sears at all is becoming extremely difficult to do these days but to be able to visit one of their largest locations ever is something else!
Due to loud music on the in-store radio, we had to mute out most of the audio so we would not get a copyright claim. That said, enjoy the sounds of Sears Golden Strings album "White Christmas" as it sounded on vinyl in the 1960s with a tad bit of remixing to mimic the sound of the music as if it were actually being played in the store.

There was a Sears store in East Liberty PA that was three floors in the 1960s. It was huge. It was closed in the 90s. My brother in law was a Sears repairman. He had a little blue Sears Repair van and would go to people's homes and fix their TVs, refrigerators, washers/dryers. It is a shame that this icon did not find a way to survive.

It still amazes me. Sears had catalogues long before my time. They new how to do it. They had the stores everywhere. They could have and should have been Amazon. At the very least Wal-mart. It's amazing how management missed the opportunities by thinking everyone knows them, everyone trust them, everyone will go to them.

I have so many memories at this Sears. My parents lived in Colesville, about 10 minutes north of this store. They bought every single appliance from there, treadmill, TVs, lawn equipment. Every one of my tools is from that store. I remember all the times I would run over in the evening or the weekend to go grab a particular tool to finish a project. As a kid, I would go down those escalators to the kids and toys section that was down below. I remember when every entrance used to be open and you could check out at any of the counters. Accompanying my dad to the jewelery section to find something for my mom on her birthday. Hearing this store is coming to a close is incredibly sad.

The Silver Spring Sears isn't the only department store in town to close after 50 years of occupancy. One county away, JCPenney and Macy's recently closed. The former was a Woodward & Lothrop that opened from the 1960s until the chain folded and later became JCPenney. The latter was a standalone Hecht Company from 1960 to when Macy's took over.

Too true, including I dare say the last one in Michigan (Rivertown Crossings, Grandville, MI) which has either closed by now or its very last days. Smaller one (half the size of one I worked at which was one of the older if not of the oldest left which closed over a year ago) and even had a smaller one in Muskegon, MI which somehow had a 11 designation which is a full line store. There also used too be 5 Kmart stores at one time. Last two closed about two years ago, one being last anchor of a former mall with other end a former Montgomery Wards. When I first started working at Sears the fashion and smaller item trucks used too be stuffed with over 2000 stock tags, when I left the store just before it closed we were down too a quarter of a semi trailer at the most which is just plain sad. As the store regularly had good foot traffic. With number one Lands End unit in the nation. Thankfully they were spun off as a separate entity agian.

Well-maintained, but rather empty. The clothes at Sears are humdrum and overpriced. With the internet the choices are infinite. I know the market is middle America, but this is a rather elderly middle America.

I've had fun going to this Sears for the over 30 years I've lived in this area. Downstairs had the childrens', maternity, lingerie and linens. You saw the watch repair shop. The garden and Christmas sections were bright & good in the past, and on the right side was a garden center with plants. You probably saw how many doors there were! The doors were closed as entrances until only the two doors in the front remained. I've always liked the MCM vibe of this store, as well as the location. I haven't been this year, but it was so sad when the Lands End section closed; that was when it really started looking empty. None of the employees would say it was closing, but it seemed inevitable. BTW, people mentioned this already, but Montgomery Co., MD has had a tax on store bags for years. A lot of checkers call it a charge, but it's a tax they're required to collect, meant to go towards cleaning up trash, esp. plastic. It's a pet peeve of mine when people make it sound like you have to "buy" the bag. Not a big diff., in a way, except that I'm willing to help clean up the landscape, but not really interested in paying a _company_ for the bag!

For many years, Sears advertising slogan was "Sears Where America Shops." Sadly , no more. I used to shop at this very same Sears store for many years. In the summer of 2020, I went to this Sears to buy a spark plug and a air filter for my Sears Craftsman lawn mower that I bought here in 2006. The whole garden center was shut down where they carried everything I needed. It was very hard to find anyone to help me, but once I did, he said to go to Lowe's as they now sell Craftsman items. That kind of told me that this Sears was not going to last very long. That Sears Craftsman lawn mower that I bought in 2006, lasted longer than Sears did. It still works great.

Opened to 6, WOW they use to be open from 9-9 every day and 9-6 on Sunday. This Sears store was in our district at one time. That auto center was & may still be used for training for the techs. Some of my friends had gone down there to train on all the equipment including the alignment rack when they were put in. The main store is huge. There is a basement that is divided into some sections for training rooms. I'm sure by now they just sit vacant for the most part. That store use to be very clean, bright, and beautiful as this was the hub for the District Manager. The old Sears store I started at in Hanover, PA is now being transformed into a Rural King, at this time the Auto Center still sit vacant. RK has taken residency in old K-mart & Sears locations. Maryland has started as of Jan1 2021 to charge 5 cents for plastic bags. Thanks for that tour @ WallieB26

Today is Feb.26, 01~ I wonder if the doors are shut at this point....I will go see. I have been shopping at this Sears since the 70’s. My Mom used to take us there, and then years later I went with my sons to buy uniform clothes for school, shoes, etc. Later I bought appliances. I used to enjoy looking at all the baby clothes downstairs and the pretty sleepwear items. Its very sad to lose this store, it carries a lot of memories with it. He, along with his wife who was a secretary, raised their 3 kids in a lovely, leafy, middle class neighborhood about 10 minutes away. My friend and I delivered The Washington Post door to door in said neighborhood. The houses when new went for around $30,000 in the early 60's. 4 BR, 2.5 bath. Ours was $65,000 in '75. Today those houses are 400+++ and if ya actually get the Post it's in a bag in the driveway. The 5 cents is to encourage reusable bag usage and helps pay for the amazing recycling program in beautiful Montgomery County, MD. Sigh, those 'good ole days' are looooong gone.

Still have several items in my house purchased there including a Refrigerator, Laundry machines, Yard Timmer, vacuums, tools, you get the idea (Kenmore and Craftsman) and some shoes. Remembering when there was a Land's End store inside. Photo studio was upstairs - where the key shop is I think. Place was packed with merchandise - it was hard to get around, other than the wide aisles. A shell of its former self. It was never fancy, but it was functional.

A few he bought out were Walden Books which was bought ought by Borders then closed, Handy Andy and Builders Square bought out by KMart along with others. The reason why the Discover card was barely accepted by anyone is it was started by Sears which already had been long struggling being not keeping up with the times. Its a case of two that should never have combined as Eddie Lampert was only a junior officer at cant think of name at this moment but one of them caught up in the prime mortage problems.

Smart was going out some how they merged, it was supposed to save both my this merger. Now kmart sunk like a yr into this, Sears attempted to bail kmart out over previous bankruptcy that was filed. It back fired to Sears. They became 1 it all fell in the bankruptcy.

I live in Maryland and if you're in the Baltimore city limits, the plastic bag charge is new. The goal behind it is to encourage people to use paper bags. But since it's Maryland, the state where they tax everything, it's more about money and less about the environment.

I was browsing videos and stomped by this one. As of today, they remained only 16 stores open in the USA. The San Juan, Puerto Rico store is the biggest of all, by sales and size of the store, about 242,000 square feet and three floors. The Auto Center closes about a year ago. This store, in better years, always was number 1 or 2 in sales, only surpass sometimes by the Honolulu store.

Hi, IDK about the $0.05 Per Bag at Sears i know when me and my Family went on Vacation to California they Charged $0.10 per bag at walmart but i think they are reuseable to where you can take them with you every time you go to shop at walmart or pay the $0.10 per bag again if you forgot to take your previously purchased bags with you. i know when we asked them about the extra charge for the bags they also mentioned that in the future they would be doing this with all walmarts slowly.
