Abandoned Kmart - Hyattsville, MD
Ойын-сауық
Abandoned Kmart - Hyattsville, MD. This location closed in early 2020 as the parent company, Transform Co, continues to struggle. Even now in late 2020 they are closing more stores as they dwindle down to extinction.

I wish this kmart didn't closed. I remembered going shopping there a lot back in the mid 2000s when I was a kid.
I know I'm late, but as many have already said, this started off as a Memco, then Bradlees, then K-Mart. This place was a staple of my childhood, especially during the holidays. My Atari 2600 came from Memco, and I got one of the first Sony Walkmans ever made from Bradlees. Oh the memories!
This was a former Memco, just for anyone who is curious. Also, was a Bradlees too before Kmart. This is one of my local stores :)

Yes, forgot that it had been a Bradlees for a bit in the 1980s! We had a Memco that converted to Bradless in Camp Springs, MD. Though, I think after Bradlees went out of business, it turned into a church. :-o

Me and you both.
That was originally a membership department store called "Memco"...with its fingernail design opening. I grew up off that street (Sargent Road) but about 3-4 miles away right across the D.C. line. The store was very large and had a lot of departments, including a small grocery store across the back wall. It has aisles and checkout registers with conveyer belts. Across from that was electronics, which included large floor model TV. There was clothing, a toy department, linens... just everything. When Memco closed, it became Bradlees. It then became K-Mart, went out of business and closed all of its stores. By the way, Hyattsville is nowhere near Baltimore. It's part of the Washington (DC) Metropolitan area. It is less than 5 miles from D.C.; Baltimore is about a 30-40 minute drive up the BW Parkway.
I grew up going to kmart. It was cheap. But it feels weird that they're gone.
That Hyattsville Kmart is actually part of the Washington DC area not Baltimore

Gotta love close borders. Just for example, There is a Chuck E Cheese in the southern Denver area of Colorado that could easily be called Lone Tree or Littleton (two regions of Denver) although their website and maps usually seeem to dictate the CEC on the Lone Tree side of that border.

That Kmart is about a mile from the DC line. I owned a house in the adjoining DC neighborhood, Brookland for 7 years. I used to shop at that Kmart from time to time. They opened a Walmart in DC at Fort Totten a few miles away in 2015. That was likely the final straw for this store. Before Walmart came on the scene in DC, this Kmart did pretty good business since there was nothing else nearby to compete with it.
I live down the street used to love coming to this k mart, all a memory now 😢
I used to go to this location as a child. I believe it was formerly Ames right down the street from old Shoneys. I could be wrong because it’s been a while. Wow.

Close! It was Bradlees, and before that it started as Memco.
Built originally as a Memco in 1970 and then a Bradlees in 1983, this Kmart first opened in 1989.

From what I've seen, not all that often that Kmart would take over an existing building. Maybe just me but doesn't it seem more common for Kmarts to be original build stores?
Relaxing by the fireplace while watching this odd looking abandoned Kmart! I love WallieB26!!
Wow! How amazing! 😀👍 Have a Kmartlicious Day!
Nice vid; architecture looks almost classical; and you're not being judgemental, you're being safe. Take care!
Great video wallie.. Different kmart forsure thanks for sharing this one :D
A great video, Wallie! That's the first KMart I've seen with the cool brick pillars in the front entrance. The 2 KMart stores that I shopped at was here in Weirton,WV and Steubenville,Ohio.
Aspen Hill, MD was one of the last ones to close and it’s still there sitting abandoned. Sits off Connecticut Ave & Georgia Ave in Montgomery County, MD. About 20 min from this location (Hyattsville)
I betcha that was once a Memco.
That Wendy's looks similar to the one in Hermitage,Pennsylvania. Speaking of Hermitage, there is an abandoned Brusters, Denny's, Shop n Save, and a Sears auto center. I enjoyed the Perkins video from nearly a year ago. Keep up the great work!!!!
I got my first n64 here way back in 97 brings back memories.
What a cool looking Kmart! Looks like a museum or a City Hall. 😀
That was a really cool explore Wally 🤠. The Kmart looked like it was locked 🔐. I wonder what it looked like inside. Looks like the power is still on inside. I loved the architecture of the building. The place definitely looks like it was something else before I don't remember the KMART'S being in that Fancy.
It was just a reg kmart i remember when Memco was there and then later on Bradlees

Yup
I used to shop there until they closed, it looked about the same as the late 90s it was a bit out of date. They did have a key maker machine. There was one in aspen hill MD that closed as well.
Greenbelt Maryland as well as Hyattsville, were formerly Memco stores as noted below. Adelphi Maryland (Langley Park) was originally an EJ Korvette store. Kmart, begining in the mid 1970's, assumed the leases of many former closed competitors, including WT Grant, Caldor ,Town and Country, Woolco, and others. Some of those locations were left behind in the 1990's as Kmart built the new "Oak Park" prototype corner entrance stores. In some towns, you will find two abandoned Kmarts of different vintages...
@adlad75

I didn't know the Greenbelt location was a Memco!? It doesn't have the look of one, like the Hyattsville Kmart and the Camp Springs Bradlees with the distinctive awnings.
Thx for exploring my Kmart near me!
There's an abandoned Kmart near my house in Chicago's Southwest side with a walk-up pharmacy window outside and a bus terminal on the side too where the CTA bus #67 stopped to rest during the weekends but is no longer used.
I'm late to the party, but I absolutely love that store front! Not typical of Kmart, and that's why it makes it unique

If your curious, it was a Memco Department Store, Then a bradlees
Cool 😀 The arch's remind me of the Belk's at Friendly Shopping Center in Greensboro NC. I went there a lot with my Grandparent's in the 1980's and 1990's.
Awesome video
This might have been a Memco store before it was a Kmart

Yes, definitely the distinctive Memco architecture with the arches and awnings. Same with the former Memco/Bradlees in Camp Springs, MD. Probably elsewhere, I imagine.

If Eddie Lambert had any intent to run them as retail, he would have dumped the Kmart name, Closed most of them, and turn the rest of them into Sears. Instead he saved Kmart just to kill it again anyway, then got Sears and killed it too. What a shame.
The front of that store reminds me of the movie theaters here back in the day.
This is so cool watching this cause I live near that k mart and I remember going there as a kid a lot of times right now in 2021 they blocked of every entrance of the parking lot and like he said if you live near the k mart like me you can just walk over there to do some shopping.
The biggest reason most didn't go to Kmart, was because Kmart stopped giving them a reason to- when you don't carry everything people need at prices that are competitive even if they live 1 foot from the store, they WILL drive to someplace that gives them everything they need at prices they can afford (that's the very reason Walmart passed them in 1990 with just about half the number of stores).
The front of that Kmart reminds me of a Foley's store don't know why
It used to called Memco it was converted ti k mart converted it those arches had blue covers. My dad took us here many times. I keyed less than5 miles from there as a child.
I’ve noticed that A lot of kmarts that didn’t have a Little Caesars or K café had a Wendy’s in the parking lot or across the street, it’s like that with the Saint Paul Minnesota big Kmart and the one in Minneapolis big kmart that Closed years ago

Originally opened in 1970 as Memco, then Bradlees and finally Kmart in 1989 The arches remind me of old Sanger Harris stores

had a few memories there. correct me if im wrong but its been kind of an abandoned building for a few years at this point.

This looks like an old Kroger/ Super X Drugstore design that they used in 1990. Super X closed in 1993. Then REVCO Dug brought Super X and then REVCO went bankrupt in 1997 and CVS Corp brought all REVCO and it wet to CVS by the end of 1998.

Maybe it's the arches that have a similar look? As far as I recall, it was a Memco in the 70s/80s.

It sucks that Kmart and Sears have a potential that they might go out of business completely because of Eddie Lampert and his money he embezzles from these stores and it is actually illegal to embezzle money

Cool video guys and all but I have some interesting news guys. Apparently in September Eddie Lambert stepped down as ceo of Sears holdings I think but it's still owned by his other brand transform co. So who knows what's next for kmart.
Hey! Another Kmart!
The front of this store is very similiar to the location in Waterford Michigan.
Can you make a trip to California? There is three Kmart's in Southern California: Long Beach, Costa Mesa, and Big Bear! The Long Beach and Costa Mesa Kmart's are only like 30 minutes away from each other.
