One of the biggest problems with archery is that arrows don’t fly in a straight line. This is known as the Archer’s Paradox: arrows need to bend in order to fly straight!

They were pretty accurate with the archery in Brave. Whats going on with the bit where she cuts her cheek with the feather when she releases?
@Antifrost
Ай бұрын
I had never noticed that, that's pretty cool. I'm guessing it's a detail to remind us that even though the scene is in slow motion, the arrow is still flying at high speed when it leaves the bow string. The edge of the feather they used as fletching must've been sharp enough to leave that small cut as it grazed her face, sort of like how papercuts happen.

It's basically as the first reply said, fletchings are really thin and are moving very fast when you let an arrow fly, so despite not having a cutting edge they can still leave scratches on soft surfaces like your skin if they brush closely enough against it
@blumineck
Ай бұрын
My guess is that she’s overdrawn the bow, knowing she’ll need extra power for this shot, and the arrow is moving faster than normal and from a slightly different point. Fletching cuts do happen, but very rarely on the face

My brother and I used to play around in the yard, tearing different amounts of fletching off of arrows and seeing what direction they would fly. Some of those shots were pretty dynamic.
People think the moat was to slow the enemies' approach. It was a mirror so archers could safely observe their trickshots through the machicolations.
That last arrow bent its way to my heart. Whoa.

ha! i did a science project on this subject (fletching placement) in high school in the early 90s. as i recall-- the fletching placed up an inch or two from the front would often produce very abrupt right angle turns (not cinematic magic arrow turns! more aptly described as right-angle burn-outs...)

"While the turn radius was extremely small, velocity suffered greatly, and the closest we managed to a 'hit' was when an arrow accidentally struck a worm. On inspection, the worm was identified as a land flatworm (family Geoplanidae), but we were unable to recover the worm for observation or further identification. However, flatworms are capable of regenerating into two worms when cut in two, meaning that our experiment was responsible for -1 casualties. "Further research into the offensive possibilities of this technique was abandoned as unproductive. We have instead submitted our results to the Institute of Screwball Tomfoolery and Hijinx, and we understand that they are preparing a paper on their findings that will appear later this year."

I loved how they animated the arrow in that scene in Brave. I got so curious about that scene when I first saw it that I went down a full rabbit hole on how arrows work during flight XD
I watched that one Lars dude, Practised with a 50 pound compound bow in my yard. I learned some stuff. For me anyway. Like, Holding a shot and trying too hard to aim always seemed to lack in accuracy, but when I let fly at the first point I aimed at, Confidently Let the arrow go and it hit its mark almost everytime. I started getting my friends to toss things in the air, Empty cookie boxes etc, And id try to spin, quickly shoot them before they hit the ground. What iv ascertained from that, is that we seem to instinctively already point very accurately at what we want, all my most accurate shots were on my mind “point and release” Can even try it yourself, try to immediately point your finger at something and youl be dead accurate, but linger and try to steady and your arm will move more than you think. Im not a professional I just REALLY respect Archery as a whole. I think its one of the coolest things humans have ever done.

Does the drunk arrow also have the same amount as power beiphind it, or is it a case that the more power = more drunk? I can see a real usefulness for being able to literally shoot an opsrrow rihnd a corner like that. I'm just curious whether you have to modulate the draw on it to reduce power output in favour of stability, or if it doesn't really matter?!
@blumineck

It naturally will have a lot less power, because you’re using air resistance to change its direction of flight. So not only does it tend to hit at an angle, but it’s fairly rapidly decelerating as well
Dude thats sick as hell
“They’ve deployed shields! Archers, knock wiggly arrows!”
Friend; they are hiding behind that tree, we can't shoot them Him; wiggle arrow shot
I saw the wiggle and thought “well that’s just useless” and then he hit us with the trick shot
That last shot really reminds me of 'Wanted' (the one where they bend the trajectory of the bullet) 😂
"The coast is clear boys, let's keep moving." The Elf hiding behind a tree about to pull an archery equivalent to a curve-ball:
The fetchings cause drag, which acts on the lever arm or 'moment' between that drag and the pivot point, which is the center of mass in this case. So the further the fletching are behind the center of mass, and/or the more drag the fletchings cause, the more stable the flight of the arrow will be. The head of an arrow also causes drag, but because it is in front of the center of mass not behind, its drag actually destabilizes the arrow. So the head of the arrow and the fletchings are, in a sense, fighting with each other. Everything is a lever; even rockets.
Oh, I definitely want to see the auroras once in real life. So nice you got to see it as well the cute reindeers ❤❤❤

Amazing, the picture of San rock art showing a man holding a bow and arrow is many hundred years old and you can see it on the short 'Sevilla Rock Art Trail' at Traveller's Rest in the Cederberg Mountains in South Africa. Was just there - recognised it immediately!
somehow this reminded me of an old article in a science magazine, "the physics of baseball cheating". a Spitball, or "scuff ball", or other tricks, make the ball lopsided, aerodynamically speaking, so the ball will zig-zag through the air when thrown with a proper spin. however, a "screwball" or a "knuckleball" (NO spin) will wobble in a completely random way! those are much harder to do properly, and are easy to hit if done improperly, so you rarely see them in professional games.
