One of the Best Lenses Ever: The 24-70mm 2.8 Lens
The 24-70mm lens is one of the most versatile lenses ever made. Certainly a lens that I keep in my camera bag all the time and depend on. Here's a quick overview of why I think every photographer should have this lens or an equivalent in their kit.
Brand New Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM: $1,699.00 (B&H, Canon USA, Adorama)
Found Renewed/Refurbished: $1,324.95 (Newegg)

Timely video! I've had the earlier version of this lens for years and just yesterday I took some of the nicest flower pictures I've ever done. Hand held, P mode on the 5D and deep in shadow then 10 secs later I was taking a pano of the ocean view. It's like having 3 primes! But I would be very curious as to what you might recommend in a lighter weight platform. I can't handle much weight and I am thinking of moving to Fuji or Olympus.

Glad this video was helpful! You’ll definitely feel the weight using this lens after a period of time especially with DSLR’s but if your planning on switching to a mirrorless system, if I’m not mistaken, I’m positive that those cameras have lenses that are lighter weight and cover similar focal ranges. I don’t have much experience with Olympus or Fuji’s but the weight difference is so noticeable compared to using a DSLR!
Hi! I have a canon r8 and am currently looking for an affordable lens in the focal range of 24-70 or 24-105. I'm willing to buy used and everything under ~800€ is okay. Which lens would you recommend? I already have an ef-rf adapter, so the ef mount is definitely a possibility. I mainly want a really nice and sharp lens, preferably with a fixed aperture of 2.8 (or 4). But there is 20 years of lenses to work through and I kinda lost track of which one is still good to todays standard, yet affordable.
Just used my copy of this lens for product shots. Absolutely deadly!

@@ericsunphotography Images seem slightly better than the 24-105 f/4. Do miss IS for video, but overcome it mostly with software. Using the 5D IV.
Recently I purchased R6 (first generation). Should I get the EF version and use the adopter or get the RF version with IS? Is the cost of the RF justified? Another g\question, the folk in the camera store said anything over 70mm such as 70-200mm it’s better to have IS even the camera has IBIS. Your opinion is greatly appreciated.

Great questions! Personally, I would go the EF with adapter route because RF lenses are just so expensive. I actually have the r5 and got the mount adapter with the control ring and it works great. If you want to save money, that’s the route I’d definitely go. I just personally can’t justify paying an extra $1G or so for an RF lens of the 24-70mm when I already have that lens with an EF mount. For your IS question, in my experience the biggest reason I see where IBIS and IS is important is because of the weight of the lens. For the 70-200mm, that lens is big and heavy and if your shutter speed isn’t fast enough (for photos), then the likelihood of getting blurry images increases-also because of the focal range, even if the lens slightly moves, it’ll be greatly noticeable because you’re so zoomed in and it’ll magnify the lens movement which can create that blur that IS and IBIS can correct/help with. I don’t necessarily think that any lens over 70mm that IBIS or IS is essential because I have an 85mm prime and don’t really have that issue ever. It would also depend on what you shoot-I use higher focal lengths mostly for street, portraits, landscapes. I don’t shoot races, sports, or anything with really quick movement so that’s something to keep in mind too. If you shoot sports or anything fast paced then IS and IBIS will really help you out. Or if you need to stay extremely still like for wildlife photography. Sorry, this is getting long loll but what Canon does say is that IS in your lens is good because IS can be tuned for each lens so it’s more lens specific whereas IBIS is in the camera body which is more like a general stabilization regardless of the lens. So, if you have both, the two parts of your set up will both have a stabilization, your results will be better because one’s focused on your camera body function and the other on your lens. But again, it just depends on what you’re shooting and if it’s necessary for the work you do. I don’t really bother much with it because my 70-200 has IS built in-so those kinds of lenses in my experience will have IS already and you pay for that too when you get the lens. Hope this helps! I’m all about efficiency and effectiveness. I mostly focus on what I need to get my jobs done and not necessarily drool over the specs when sometimes they won’t have any impact on my work.

hey, might chime in here, though I am using Nikon Z6. I have the 24-70 2.8 for the Z mount, and have intermittently using the 24-70 2.8 for the F mount (dslr). performance wise, the Z mount lens is better in everything except maybe color, I found that the F mount lens has more colorful output, with the same settings. The raw file also is slightly more colorful, albeit it might be just me. but if you dont really shoot sports, a dslr lens still provides good output if used on a mirrorless.
Hey i just found this lens on amazon for 500.00 but its 4.0 not the 2.8. Its for my cannon mark 50 ii. Is the 4.0 good lens for that camera

I have the canon R.P. Do you think this lens would make a good combo with it?
@ericsunphotography

Oh for sure! You should get a mount adapter because the lens in this video has an EF mount and the EOSR has an RF mount. But if you don’t have a 24-70 or equivalent, I’d always recommend it because it is one of my most used lenses ever.
No doubt the Canon 24-70 f2.8 is a fantastic lens, though I decided against it (or other 24-70 f2.8). I don't need f2.8 on a zoom, f4 will do, so I went with the Canon 24-100 f4 L, which adds IS, something the Canon 24-70 does not have. If I need faster speeds, I go to a prime lens for faster apertures. I guess if I needed a 24-70 f2.8 I would grab the Sigma version which has IS.

The 24-100 f4 is a fantastic lens as well. I don't have one but I've used the 24-105 and it's a great lens too! Definitely agree with you that knowing what lenses you need and what they can do is so important and having 3rd party options to help save money is always a plus! 👌👌

I rented this lens to shoot some wedding videos and the 2.8 aperture becomes invaluable when you're at night or inside a church and you want to retain the versatility of the zoom. There's an argument to be made for primes in such contexts but if I'm shooting video I'd rather use one lens the entire day rather than having to re-balance the gimbal over and over again

👆👆 rebalancing a gimbal during an event is just too much loll. Definitely agree. Just balance once and keep shooting!

Canon’s EF lenses will work on canon’s APS-C cameras or cropped sensors so you should be good! I think in the States the Canon 200D is aka the Canon rebel SL2…but keep in mind that crop sensors have a 1.5x crop factor. So it’ll definitely work but it’ll be tighter than the look you’d get using a full frame camera. An equivalent that’s close to a 24-70mm look on a full frame would be like a 17-50mm range lens for a crop sensor if I’m not mistaken!

For sure, 3rd party lenses are always a great alternative and most of them perform just as well which is why I have some sigma lenses. It’s all up to what you’re looking for in a lens and also, the warranties 😂😂
