Canon RF & EF Lens Review and Comparison || 24-70mm F 2.8

Ойын-сауық

Let's test the new Canon RF 24-70mm F2.8 lens against the EF 24-70mm F2.8 Mark II on two sets of different images. We'll look at images produced using the Canon EOS R, captured on a tri-pod so very little changes from image to image. We'll compare images captured in the studio and outdoors in late evening sun, measuring the colors, details and quality of these two lenses from Canon.

    Right on and thank you for the compliments. To update I did sell the EF and go with the RF as I had an opportunity to help a friend get a much needed upgrade and used that to move forward a bit. I think the detail is lovely from the RF, but I still look at the EF images from similar sessions and see almost the same flow of detail. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and for watching!

    OMG. Finally a video that talks about these lenses with the opinions I am seeking. Thanks sooo much for posting this!!! I just ordered the R6 mark ii as a huge step up from my t6i after my product photography coach said my t6i just won't cut it. this r lens you are discussing is just waaaay too expensive, so I am almost 100% going to get the used EF lens with an adapter since I see many professionals here on KZread talking about opting for adapters over re-buying all their lenses for their R cameras. I just can't get there for the r f4 lens. the last thing I want for working with window light indoors is the frustration of grainy photos with slow shutter speeds with the f4. The only thing I see from comparisons done by other KZreadrs is that the EF lens seems a bit less sharp around the edges of subjects. .. ok now I'll continue watching your video. renting is a good tip. Can you comment on the sharpness? I guess I can tweak in Lightroom ( I still need to learn Lightroom).

    Been circling the RF. I'm glad I watched the entire video to hear the caveat - that you are speaking as a photographer and not filmmaker. I'm both but your reminder about the control ring use for filmmakers has convinced me I need the RF. (It will be my first RF as I just bought the R6.) I, too, rented the RF for a photoshoot and was blown away by it - but that's to do with the new camera as well as I previously used the Canon 7D for a decade. Loved the vid and thank you so much for doing it!

    My apologies for the delay in response - been traveling for work :) Since the time of this recording, I've sold my EF and upgraded to the RF and am happy over all. The control ring is key for film-making IMO and glad you are going that route. And so excited for you - that upgrade from the 7D to the R6 is going to be RAD! Thanks for the kind words and for watching!!

    That’s encouraging to hear because I just ordered the R6 mark ii and I can’t afford the 24-70 mm so I need to opt for a used EF version of that lens with adapter . I have been researching this long and hard the past few days in a few places and there seems to be unanimous agreement that the EF lenses work just fine in the r cameras. This video here is the best I’ve found so far . Only one you tuber disagreed with using old EF lenses on r cameras . I took a private product photography lesson for my artwork and I’m trying to focus ( pardon the pun ) on getting the lens she suggested I get. I had my old t6i rebel during the lesson and she said it was inadequate for my needs so I took her advice and found an open box deal on the R6 mark ii.

    Thank you for your work on this. This video does a great job of demonstrating the image quality differences between these two lenses. There is little to distinguish between them and other factors such as the need to use a converter (or not) or the presence of EF mount cameras in your kit might be more compelling reasons to consider which option works best. While the price difference between the two at the time of this KZread publication was $500 in reality the incremental cost to many photographers will be different. As a current EF 24-70 mkii owner/user, the cost to acquire the RF version is the full purchase price minus the proceeds from the sale or exchange of my EF lens. Significantly more than $500. If I didn’t currently own either, I would most likely investigate the availability of. VG+ used model of the EF 24-70 while recognising the used market for RF glass is somewhere between extremely limited to nonexistent. Again, much more than $500. Thanks again.

    You are most welcome and thank YOU for the great, great response! I completely agree with you and as an update to this video, I'm now the (semi) proud owner of an RF 24-70 as I just sold my EF to a friend who needed the upgrade of the EF 24-70 F2.8 Mii and I could make use of the IS in the RF lens for future video work. It was an expenditure that I hadn't necessarily wanted to take on, but the timing of it all made sense. I will do an update video on this very soon :) Thanks for watching!

    Very nice video. I love the EF II, but never used the RF. Looking at the photos you provide I honestly believe wedding, modeling and portrait clients would prefer the EF version. We do obsess over sharpness as photographers, but the vast majority of those who pay us look for different things. I actually find myself softening wrinkles and skin pores all too often in order to please the clientele.

    This is really interesting. I’ve just bought the R6. I sold my EF 70-200 2.8 IS to get the new RF, but that was mainly because of the weight and size. I will probably get the 15-35 and replace my 16-35, but that is really only to get IS. It’s really good to see that there really is no good reason to make the jump. Thanks for doing this video.

  • @RealityReimagined

    Aye I would definitely consider the RF 70-200 for the weight and the compact nature of the lens when packed down in your bag. The optics are also much stronger (I've heard) than the Mark 3 EF equivalent. I would really be curious to see results of the RF lens, in distance shots and low light. If I ever get my hands on one, I will give it a go. Thanks for watching!

    I am not a professional photographer. So purchasing new lenses when I got my Canon EOS R required very careful consideration on my part. I did took a similar journey comparing the EF 85 1.4 L IS + drop in filter adapter vs. the RF 85 1.2. I couldn’t justify the cost to upgrade vs. the improvements in image quality. Same was the result when comparing the EF 100-400 II + 1.4X + ring adapter vs. the RF 100-500. In both cases the new lens is better, but not worth the price of admission. Now I don’t swap EF to RF adapters. I took the extra expense to purchase the most helpful version of these adapters to each one of my EF lenses. To me they “are” RF lenses now.

  • @RealityReimagined

    @RealityReimagined

    3 жыл бұрын

    Right on and this is good to hear. We all want the best gear possible when we set out on our artistic journey, but you said it perfectly that the cost of that "best gear" is not worth the price of admission. I had purchased my EF 85 1.4 a couple of years ago and after the EF/RF 24-70 test I considered renting an RF 85 to test and see if that too had a massive improvement. I can definitely see the difference in the EF 85 and my EF 24-70 during the same session, so hoping the RF 85 might be the big leap. Thus far, it seems like they are too close to one another to again justify the expense. I appreciate your thoughts on this and thank you for watching!

    I hear you for sure and the details are pretty close to one another (RF vs EF.) I've been using the RF 24-70mm F2.8 lens with the Canon R5 and it's all pretty solid looking images, both in detail and color. EF line is still great, as long as you are using the Canon lens adapter. I've heard from other students that third party adapters have been causing issues. Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts!

    @@RealityReimagined , I traded Up to the EOS-R from my Canon 5Dmkiii end of 2019. My 5Dmk3 , I loved it and was very comfortable using it , it was an extension of my arm and did not need to think much about it. Any change is a bit uncomfortable and The Eos- R is no different , a great camera IMO. It performs as good or better on my photography and expect it will soon be just as comfortable to me. I love many things and mostly the EYE AF , just WOW and the sharpness, again IMO is amazing. I have set the ISO on the slide bar and it responds pretty well. I miss having two card slots just because it makes me feel better but no issues. After 8 months of owning the EOS-R, I have not had much time with so many challenges but the shoots i have done are amazing, I will learn to love it. I dont have my MK3 to actually compare but I think the back button focus button is a bit off and feels awkward but it may just be me. Bottom line is I would not go back to the MK3 . The Lens adapter the basic one makes the RF Lens's perform flawlessly. Something I had not expected with the EOS-R was lens incompatibility, from aftermarket companies , I put on a Tamron lens and a distinct circle appeared on the photos like a vignette , I had a problem with both Sigma and Tamron lens's and after contacting Tamron about my issue it was resolved with a LENS FIRMWARE update via the USB adapter and I updated the Sigma also. The EOS -R is an amazing camera and the basic CANON adapter with RF lens's meet and exceed my expectations. Between COVID and the blistering temps here in phoenix it is tough to get out and shoot but soon temps will come down and Covid will slow and i will get back to shooting. David, Thank you for your contribution to the industry I appreciate your ART and now your You Tube channel , you Rock

    I didn't see anyone tackle your PS side by side comparison issue in the comments (I might have missed a response), but there is a way. Open both files. Go to Window > Arrange > 2 Up Vertical. Select the Hand tool. In the Options bar, make sure Scroll All Windows is selected. Zooming in simultaneously is a bit trickier, but still doable (albeit with a custom keyboard shortcut). After you zoom into one image, you can match that with the other by going back to Windows > Arrange > Match Zoom. But that's a bit of a pain to do every time. I added a custom shortcut to handle that task (Ctrl+Shift+=). With these settings I can, relatively easily, keep both windows synced.

    I appreciate your review but I feel you neglected to speak to the IS within the RF Lens for stills. I owned the EF 24-70 MKII and loved the lens but now that I am 62 I need the support that IS provides. For me personally, the IS has made a huge difference in being able to hand hold shooting at a lower ISO across all shooting environments and get tack sharp images, especially when shooting at F2.8.

    I'm a lil down the road on commenting. But the reason I've stuck with EF lenses on my R5 was simple. I use the adapter with the variable ND drop in filter built in. Being able to use that on every EF lens I have is absolutely amazing and now I don't lose 2/3rds of the power of my flashes going into HSS. If I go to RF lenses I have to go back to having different variable ND filters for every lens. No thanks. With the EFmount drop in filter it was like they added another control ring that is there all the time.

    the EF lenses are ok but when you have 1 RF thats the problem . changing lenses in the field isnt the easiest when you have to change the adaptor too . OK if you change from 1 EF to 1 RF not a problem as you just leave the adaptor on the EF :) but then you change to the 3rd lens which is EF and dame the adaptor in like on the other one. oh and dont go there mixing the rear caps up LOL for some people may say 3 lenses ? well this day was the RF 24-105 F4 then to the Tamron EF15-30 F2.8 oh then back to the RF 24-105 then to EF 100 F2.8 macro all in a small space of time in a field so no place to put anything down, this is why im going to slowly change my EF to RF starting with the EF70-200 F4 to RF70-200 F2.8 then RF 28-70 F2 then wait a year :)

    Oh wow - I didn't even consider that, even though I experienced it during the filming of this video. That would be maddening to have various sets of lenses and then try to match up/not damage as you swap among them. Especially thinking of the folks that do events or weddings where you have to switch quickly. That minor inconvenience would be a major one, after a short while and probably promote me to switch all of my glass to RF ;) Thanks for watching!

    From my experience I know that when you compare lenses in studio with Speedlights. Almost any lens; RF, EF, STM, cheap price expensive it doesn’t matter. In control light in studio any lens will give stunning results. I would rather compare lenses outside in nature during Noon and Sunset to see all aspects of glass performance. I believe engineers at Canon are not releasing new products and just put high price because they just feel it worth more then previous lenses, it really new glass quality which is not easy to Create.

    Aye I agree - that's why I wanted to also do the test of images outside at the start of Golden Hour light and put both of the lens through its paces to compare. I am into Wildlife and the Canon 600mm 4.0 III performs like a native lens on the R5. Stellar! Also all my other EF lenses perform like a charm. The images are sharp and have good quality to them - similar to the EF Mark II version, however the stabilization in conjunction with IBIS in the R5 is fantastic for low light situations and for video. I would encourage you to look at the RF 24-70 only because it's such a workhorse lens and coupled with your R6, you'll have a combo that will last you for a long, long time. Reality check: the significant price differential between the two lenses would suggest the RF version to render an immediately identifiable difference in detail and tonal gradations, but from this comparison I cannot equate that price difference so as to say the RF version produces a significantly better image. For us, this is a moot point - we abandoned our Nikon system in favour of Canon mirrorless and purchased an R and R5 body; 70 - 200 RF; 24 - 70 RF and the 85mm 1.2f RF lenses rather than equipping each EF lens we buy with its own adapter. All bodies have a battery grip for better balance and increased shooting time (we are NOT videographers).

    Reality Reimagined RF lenses: putting the “Canon tax” aside as pertains the new RF series, in our opinion the quality, look and feel are premium grade for the RF series. We chose the 70 - 200 RF because its collapsable size allows more room in the camera bag. We chose the 85mm RF for its bokeh at 1.2f and we chose all RF glass for their edge sharpness and excellent chromatic aberration control. These are not light weight pieces of kit! My wife is 85 pounds wet and one of these rigs is a real bear to manage for her. As for the control rings I feel all rings should be in the same place on each lens. I like them closest to the lens flange so to avoid confusion we do not enable any functions for the rings. This is somewhat the same feature issue as the touch pad on the R - interesting idea but of questionable value. Just because they can do it does not mean it should be done.

As a camera just for photography, it's apparently the cat's meow and I want to get my hands on one and test it against the R and see how much the 15 megapixels makes a difference. My gut tells me that I will eventually move toward it in the next year or so - mainly for the IBIS alone. Do you have one/considering getting one and what are the reasons why? Right on - I think with the digital age of cameras and the use of a flip screen (like with the Canon R/R5/R6) photographers are more prone to holding their cameras in wild, various positions. The potential for a control wheel bump is probably a bit higher because of this. Paul LaNoue - I would note firstly, I don't have an RF lens, but bought one as a gift, so used it only couple minutes. Ring wasn't engaged. But I still useF mount lenses. You cannot bump change the aperture on these. The change is a deliberate grab,then twist. It's integral to not changing the aperture in error. From my time with the RF, I easily turned the front ring while holding the barrel. I'm sure over time I would learn to avoid it, but as it easily turned ( compared to a F mount lense, or no ring at all), I'd have to suggest I could see users easily bump turning it.

    Thank you so much for the kind words and for watching the video. Since the time of that recording, I have sold my EF 24-70mm F2.8 in favor of the RF version. Depending on the work that you typically finding yourself doing, having that extra stop can be critical. However I would first ask - are you doing studio work with flashes or natural light/outdoor work? The F2.8 is going to help with natural light looks and giving you more of that bokeh effect in your imagery - which is key if you want to compete with others in your market that also do natural light. However if you are a studio photographer with strobes, then that extra stop isn't going to be used nearly as much because most studio lighting starts at an F-stop of 5.6 and above. The sharpness should be there regardless of the lens - but the extra detail and parts of the subject more in focus, comes from the higher F-stop. I also am selling my EF 85mm 1.4 prime lens in favor of the RF 50mm F1.2 - simply because of the extra field of view. I have loved the 85mm, but it very much is an issue with framing, constantly. Thanks again for watching and sharing your thoughts - best of luck and stay safe!

I have been quite unimpressed by many of the EF versions, for landscapes. Most of them have had bothersome issues with unsharp corners at certain focal lengths, even when stopping down. The EF copy I own now is really good though, but it still has some weaknesses. The RF is almost perfect at every focal length. It was so much better than the EF version in that regard that I was surprised, despite my high expectations. Other than that, they are quite similar. It requires pixel peeping to tell them apart in the center of the image, even at f2.8. So yes, sharpness difference at the center should be irrelevant to most of us. 👍

I have a video coming out soon comparing the R5. R6 and the R against each other. If you are used to the 1DX, I wouldn't go down to the R6 as it is a 20 megapixel camera and not nearly as strong as the R or the R5. Nothing against either of those entities, I just know the folks at B&H a bit more than I do the others. The reason I did this review is because a lot of the communities that I am a part of, in regard to photography education, are talking about these lens and the camera bodies. Since the recent launch of the R5/6 by Canon, lenses are definitely on their minds. I had been doing a lot of direct answering of my thoughts, via emails and social media, so I decided to go the distance and rent the lens to do a test for viewers. I totally agree that the SEO and metrics off of this video will help with watch time (currently sitting at 86 views) but truly my primary reason for doing it was to answer the folks that are asking about them due to the timeliness of the new cameras. I very much want more content on the channel about how I work as a photographer and Photoshop artist - for sure. Again being transparent, the studio that I'm a co-op member at, has been a big challenge in the past few months to work in and record this video content. I'm moving (in two weeks) to a new shared space with only one other photographer (rather than 20 plus members) and will have ZERO trouble recording content that I want for this channel and for other projects. That's just me though. I'm at the stage in my self taught photography journey where 95% of the videos I find are just covering stuff I already understand but every now and again there's some fantastic detail that I'm missing (for example using the RGB tone curves in Lightroom to increase contrast). Even though it's a passion and I have spent so much time evolving my career around the interests and genres I have in photography and Photoshop art, who am I to be the one to tell others how to do it for themselves? At the start of the digital photography age I saw too many photographers start their educational careers from the perspective of (speaking to SEO click bate) "Learn my SECRETS and make MONEY doing what you love!" I never accepted that. I was fortunate enough to meet folks that shared their knowledge from a foundation of "here is what I do to bring my art to life, maybe you can too." THAT is what has motivated this journey. Now I won't hide that I of course am looking at the revenue possibilities of YT and this channel and dedicating a lot of my life toward it; my pursuits are not only motivated by the purity of learning. However I do believe that I can be the person that creates a channel that isn't filled with paid sponsors and cash grabs that feed the bank account and have no real connection to my work as an artist. If I do make a comfortable wage at this channel, it will be something that I can honorably stand by, because to me, the joy of seeing others make their way forward truly is a thrill to me. The Scrooge McDuck money bin of cash, can come later :) So I LOVE that you are well versed in the machinations and growth of KZread because boy - do I have a bunch of questions to ask :) I hear what you are seeking (for future content) and I have 100% been dying to produce that content. I often see this channel as a "sitcom" of my photography life. I would love to create videos that shares the organic process of my imagination, how it motivates me to create the ENTIRE world of a shoot, before I pick up the camera. I would be thrilled to have folks see the on set journey and have the video lay down on the ground with me as I shoot up at a towering subject and explain WHY. However I have been reticent to make that leap, because even though I want to be "different" I feel that too many seek tutorials in that bite-sized 8 to 12 minute threshold that views like stereo instructions to some simple task. So - talk to me. Tell me why folks (beside yourself) would want to see a video of "Three Things that Motivate Me as an Artist" :)

    @@RealityReimagined Using a few real world examples, Brett Seeley has a really great point in one of his videos where he talks about adding value. His shooting style is extremely vocal, especially when working with newer models, giving them exact instructions on how to pose, what expression to pull, what to think about, how to talk to the models, etc. There's massive value in there for everyone, models can learn a tonne working with him and viewers can learn a tonne watching him. I have watched every single one of his videos to make sure I've extracted every nugget of wisdom from them. Jessica Kobeissi, built her channel doing a lot of "photographer vs photographer" challenges which are amazing to see how two different photographers can approach the same model in the same location and make different results. Huge value in there in terms of "defining your style" which is something that KZread photographers talk about a lot but don't go into too much beyond "crush the blacks and use my presets". She's been doing a lot more of the "viral" photography hacks and SEO content lately (I assume due to covid restrictions) but there's much less value in that as all it's doing is showing you cheap tricks you can replicate directly, not creative tools you can add to your quiver for any situation. Irene Rudnyk, has a hugely successful channel built around behind the scenes on her photoshoots. She doesn't go so much into why she's making the decisions she makes but her videos give plenty of ideas for locations, poses, compositions, etc. None of these guys are doing "10 instructions you should give to your model" or "how to be more creative in your compositions" they're simply showing how they do, and bits of why they do what they do, and viewers can extract value from there. So coming back to the "Three things that motivate me as an artist" I wouldn't go down that route. I would do "Star Wars sexy Darth Vader photoshoot?!" And start the video off with "so I was on Instagram when I saw /this image/ in the #sexystarwars which I follow and it got me thinking..." That way it's not just a title it's insight into your process which we as the viewer can go "ok I'll follow #sexystarwars and see if that inspires me". Then we're really watching the videos for your personality and your style, while keeping an eye out for the informational nuggets, rather than just seeing the title and coming for the information in the title. Again, this is all coming from my extremely biased view of what I'm personally interested in and I can't guarantee that it's going to be a success but I hope my thought process is a little insightful at least.

    @@PeteSimm Totally makes sense and I can see the direction you are interested in and the suggested path of sharing that content. Like Brett - I too use a lot of direction on set with models, even if they know their stuff. I have a background in theatre so I tend to use a lot of emotive suggestions to produce expression and pose - storytelling and guidance a director would give to an actor. That along with hand gestures have been a constant compliment that I have gotten from models as I work with them. Sharing the creative approach, on a project-by-project basis makes sense, rather than an over-arching "three things that motivate me" approach. Part of the plan is to adopt a style of BTS similar to Irene, but way more informative - with an almost cinematic narrative to the whole video that fits my personality. I want the channel to be more theatrical and less stereo instructions, but I also want to make sure that I give the value that folks seek, when they spend time watching the content. Just waiting for the 115 degree heat to lessen a tad :)

    Clearly the RF could be considered better on the image at minute 9:00. It without a doubt is holding those white in by default ALOT better than the EF. Of course this is something that could be equalized in 2 seconds in post. So there is some major improvements, how one uses that will determine whether or not it ever makes any difference. But if we're comparing sooc to sooc, it's easy to give it to the RF. But totally and completely unecessary.

    @@RealityReimagined Since it is simply a matter of technique to close the gap, the RF would not be worth it to move into from the EF, but if you're starting from scratch, it's really confusing, because the mirrorless systems are just catching up in many regards, and severly lag behind in lens line ups across the board. My recommendation to a starter "photographer" is to get the 5DSR which is low these days, yet only the Sony A7R4 has better resolution despite it being old as dirt, and whatever lens you like. At a grand more, the RF simply cannot be justified. imo Great vid.
