Yeah. For me Vital seems a lot more polished and maybe modern/cutting edge in its new features, but Surge is just more inspiring and interesting to me personally with all its quirks, shortcomings, (no phase control, strange wavetable modes, different filter feedback configurations) and unique features, (The many interesting Osc modes: Wavetable, FM, Sine/Phase distortion, etc.) along with its immense power. (Fm between all oscs, including between FM mode ones, Filter/Waveshaper section feedback, many many filter types, 50+ effects in the modular matrix, two scenes totaling 6 oscillators, powerful full screen MSEGs). There's just so much interesting and inspiring territory to explore!

No phase lock should be rectified ASAP. I guess I will just stick to leads, pads and effects and vital can do all that and the bass.

This has always been one of my favourite synths, which is why I bought a license all of those years back. Such a versatile and fun synth to use

Great video! I’ve been playing with Surge XT all morning, it’s amazing, and vast! So much to explore, so many parameters to tweak and presets to check out! Great fun!

One of my all time favourite softsynths. Surge is absolutely incredible. Thanks for pointing out the highlights of the update. I think I need to spend some time in MSEG town this weekend!

Thanks for this. I didn't know it was out. Surge is a great synth. The mseg and drag-and-drop effects are great usability features! I can't wait to try the filters. I'm scratching my head about putting a lot of time into viral now....

This project is awesome. It's an intimidating synth, but once you know your way around synthesis a bit, you realise how awesome people working on that synth are!

nice overview of an amazing synthesizer. I really regret sleeping on buying Surge and Shortcircuit from Vember back when they were actively marketing those two VSTs. More people doing so would have been great for Claes. And your skin looks great! [one suggestion, if I may? The black lines on the sliders might benefit from being turned 90 degrees in all cases: so vertical sliders have a horizontal black bar, and vice-versa. HTH]

Surge has been a workhorse for a while now for sure, but this is pretty sweet, I'm fired up to update it and try it out for sure. I always loved it's filters, and now I love them more!

This is fantastic news! I'm gonna make some gnarly neuro basses with that MSEG modulation!

Thank you so much. I loaded Surge in its first version and twice. Both time just trying to play it make Logic Pro X turn off (or down). Tha't's why I just gived up. But you are a good youtuber in these knowledge also there was this 1.8 update and the view is very nice so I tryed once again and now works perfectly. Thank so much. It is a great instrument.

Awesome. I have Surge and have never really used it beyond checking out some patches. I hated the old UI which was a huge turn off to me. It looks like I have some better UI options and some of the new programming options look pretty nice. I think I updated to the newer version but will double check.

I'm using Reason Suite 11, and the vst will not show in my DAW. I have made sure to add the directories in the plug-in section of DAW preferences. Any ideas? EDIT: The issue was Surge is VST3 and Reason does not yet support VST3. Therefore a VST3 wrapper must be used in this situation. Kush Elements costs only 2 dollars and works wonderfully to solve this issue.

The concerning major drawback of this synth for me is I think the oscillators has no panning and stereo width for unison voices, meaning mono sounding oscillators which is I don't really like. Another major drawback is it's confusing, unintuitive interface. For example: "where is the save button I can't find it, wait is it the store button? I thought it's a preset store" Some buttons are just double meaning. Not very welcoming for beginners. I think redesigning the interface of this synth, especially how the parts are grouped together and the spacing, can have drastic effect on the workflow especially for the beginners, even the pro ones. It could be a major advantage.

Great video. I love Surge. One question does it has a phase option and rand phase for the oscillator like Serum or Phase Plant? I can't see anything obvious on the GUI.

Thanks for the link and video on Surge, I especially like the controls ,being able to use the mouse wheel has made it really simple for pc use , what a great idea! Is there any way to use an expression pedal? I have a modx and the superknob and expression pedal rally open up the pads.

For sure, if you hook up your expression pedal you can CC map a parameter to it!

Also pendulate from newflanged audio is cool free synth that can get pretty cool sounds and it has random button, so unlimited creativity

Do I need an instrument plugged into my computer to get sound out of this thing or what? I want to use it as a drum machine/sequencer mainly. I can't get any sound out of it though. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

some sounds dont stop playing on its own, is there a way to stop that? i just can't find that setting... just some sounds, most of them get triggered by the keyboard normally but some just dont stop playing..... any tips ?

Like most synths, the limits really just come down to your patience and creativity haha. Only thing that Surge doesn't do is sample based playback.

@@VenusTheory so one could conceivably create/recreate any natural or synthetic instrument. When I hear synthesizer, that's what I think. It may not be able to sample but why could it not emulate?

Question: does any good Surge tutorial exist on planet heart? Cause I have surge but I kinda never used it because I never managed to fully understand how to operate it. I can use UVI Falcon and some other synths decently but I just look at surge and I do not understand how to operate it. I've been looking for tutorials for quite a while but I could not find decent ones (^^'''''') and it's a shame cause I've always tought this is a pretty nice synth if it would get a little more.. understandalbe ^^''''' P.S. I'd rather not "read" documentation cause my eyes kinda get tired really fast when reading that is why I'm looking for video tutorials.

Thanks for this info on the Surge 1.8 update. I just installed Surge vst 1.8.1 a few days ago (Feb.26/21) in my daw. Is this the current update you're explaining? If not, do I have to disable that version 1.8.1 vst and download latest and re-install? Not sure if it updates on it's own.

Have you tried contacting Surge to have them add your custom skin in their next update? Try it because yours looks a lot better than their defaults and it should be included.

Surge is awesome! My favorite thing: the presets aren’t too flashy, but actually usable. Main flaw: still no stereo unison right?

There is stereo unison if you use Wide or L-R filter configuration modes.

I learned EVERYTHING I know about synthesis and sound design from using surge. I had no idea about this update 😂 right, brb, updating

Download the skin that's mentioned in the description of this video. I had a little play wih Surge a couple of weeks ago and the one thing I didn't like was the GUI, so I shall be downloading the Venus Theory skin when I get on my main computer.

Is it not possible to upload my own sound recordings or samples to Surge? That is one thing I really liked about Vital.

You can only use your own wavetables, but Surge is not a sampler.

Press the Menu button then in Data Folders submenu pick Open user data folder. Drop the .surge-skin bundle there.
