    Well, who knew? Just finished a game in Jupiter Hell exploring the new paths and getting settled into working with Army of Darkness and the shotgun buffs. Game rocks, no question. Edit: the game does have mouse support, although I like it better with just the keyboard. It is turn based after all. Also, the game works superbly on the SteamDeck. It plays very well with both the Deck's innate controls or using a Steam Controller, as you would expect.

    been playing it on steam deck too and it's great! I'm amazed how dope the steam deck is.. idk why it's not more popular! It's basically a more powerful, [heavier, louder] nintendo switch that I can play pirated games on! Only real complaint is battery life, but I knew that going in; doesn't matter anyway, I just wanted to play in bed instead of walking over to the couch 😂

    The game's FAQ says this about using a mouse : "Yes, the game supports Mouse, Keyboard and Gamepad, and can be played solely using one of those controllers (including playing solely using the Mouse), or mix-match (i.e. Mouse + Keyboard). That said, the benefits of the adaptive animation system (move as fast as you input commands) come most into play when playing with Keyboard only or Gamepad only and that is what we recommend. Mouse support is opt-in in the Settings menu."

    As others have stated - there is mouse support. Also, I think what Splat said about moving diagonally is wrong. Pretty sure I read somewhere that it just shows diagonal movement as one move but it still counts as two. There is a possibility that I'm mixing that up with quasimorph though, not a hundo percento on that.

  • @Sihoiba

    JH was my most played game of 2023 making up 11% of my total play time! It plays best with a gamepad IMO. Along with ToME, this is one of the best balanced roguelikes I've played on easy/normal difficulty. The SMG's are not that good... extremely short 'optimal range' past which you take hit chance penalties, low damage, tons of ammo fired at once. It seems like every other weapon type has a niche to fill, but they seem like they just waste a ton of ammo. VS no/low armor enemies it's "okay" but higher single hit weapons will do more damage VS armored enemies like bots which is where the .44 revolver/hunting rifles come in, though you have to load individual rounds. You can compare equipped/held gear vs what's on the floor with a button.

    Can you kill everything on the map, or do enemies just keep respawning? And is there some background timer that forces you to push on, and will kill you if you loiter for too long, or can you advance methodically, taking your time? • @davefinfrock3324

    @davefinfrock3324

    The game does not have respawns--although there's one singular exception. The game is turn based, so you have all the time in the world to hang out on a particular level. However, there are level mods with event timers. There are countdowns to these events and things can get...exciting...when they kick off. The game is very highly tuned and when you die it will be because you've made a mistake or a succession of mistakes. The game is far deeper than it appears and there are a lot of mechanics that aren't readily apparent. You really need to think about what you're doing and the learning curve is quite steep.

    It's a cool game, very polished. I think you can tell it's an iteration on a previous game as it's very streamlined but has a lot of cool stuff - it's a nice mix of strategic (what sort of build you're going for) and tactical - the individual combat decisions. You can get a lot of info on the enemies and are often trying to carry a balanced mix of ranged, anti-robot and raw power and most things you can make work.

    I would say that one reason its not as well known, is because there is no real sense of progression. the runs are one and dones. I have been playing since your previous mention of the title way back. I really enjoyed it. but then I realized thats it. other then changing how I want to play or what levels I want to spend on my character there is nothing else to the game. try for a melee build, a pistol build or try something else. other then that its like what is the point? I have had a successful run and completed the game. just it gave me no real drive to come back to it.

  • @isitanos

    That's how most classical roguelikes are, no metaprogression. The game is fun so you don't need a metagame, and there's tons of replayability due to the variety of classes, builds and dungeon branches.

    Game is ok. The problem for me is with the graphics, I don't understand why you can't turn off the hud's rounding option. Additionally, the graphics are incredibly bad for my eyes. It's not visible in the recording, but there is some strange filter in the game that is supposed to imitate 90's monitors/TVs. I can't play for longer than 30 minutes because my eyes go crazy.

    Rounding and old style crt lines can both be disabled in settings. Settings -> UI and UI effects settings 😊

    It probably doesn't get as much attention cause people don't always like things that break the "mold"/conception of how something should be. Same reason why Pokemon was popular for a long time despite its repetitive nature.

    super shallow i know, but in a genre that doesn't care for looks, it's a shame this still kinda looks like a unity store special. where's the plasma red/orange terminal demake to match the ui

    @@PomesCollege that may be true, but it still *looks* like any other ol' modern steam bundleware at a glance. not a question of ability or passion from the team but art direction. it would benefit from a voice or clear position; right now it feels like it's simply checking some boxes. which is weird to say about an escapist space horror themed videogame! part of what makes DRL work is a strong visual identity, character design and cohesion (and being novel and well made). this does feel like a mechanical evolution of DRL but with a lot of that juice extracted. e: should've mentioned - any direct comparison to DRL is definitely unfair and not intended, but there are still good lessons to take from that project to apply here. also to be doubly clear: no one's insinuating unity assets are in use here, only the look and feel. i know the pain of producing work like this more or less in a vacuum.

    @@sentient_thumbnail all of the art was made from scratch. The issue here is that all of the art in the game was just a single artist, and due to costs of its production we never would even stand a chance to do even a single iteration on art as it is so time consuming - 1 monster is a whole month of art work, blocking any other art work - there's no room for iteration, tests etc. It's much simpler to iterate on a 2d game! That said, we do have an idea for a better art feel for future games! (and less dark) Comparisions with DRL are unfair, as it has the nostalgia benefit that without an expensive IP we could never stand a chance to achieve in our own game. Mechanics wise and control wise JH is a huge step forward. Most JH players have problems going back to plaing DRL (but who knows, that might change ;))
