One Of My Very Best! - Wood Turning

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I had trouble figuring out which way to turn this piece but once I got it, it was pretty clear to me. It's rare for me to have an idea for a shape in mind and then to be able to achieve that shape but it worked this time! It became a very natural pedestal bowl and I think this is one of my best turnings ever.
Maple burl, finished in shellac.

Phil...you say "I don't about this one" so many times, I don't pay attention to it anymore! This one is a prize! I don't know why but I'm always surprised by how pretty the finished creations look. No one does a better job of working WITH the wood and allowing it to keep its' voice. This one is singing pretty! Thanks to Calmwood Creations for letting Phil perform his magic on kind of a clunker looking piece of wood!

Phil, you are truly the Michelangelo of wood. Your ability to both retain and reveal beauty is rare. As an artist myself, it’s honestly moving and humbling to watch. “The sculpture is already complete within the marble block, before I start my work. It is already there, I just have to chisel away the superfluous material.” ― Michelangelo

“It’s a nice piece” says Phil, the master of the understatement. The camera placement, the commentary (“it’s not for your Cheerios, it’s an art piece”), the building excitement as the shape is revealed, like a sculptor with a block of marble. This was not only your best piece. It was like a feature film! Well done!!!

I'm the first to use this technique. The first time I was just trying to get the nub as small as possible with the intention to set it on my bench and cut it off with a chisel. Then I realized what I was doing, how small it was getting and wondered "what would happen if I just keep going?" It was clear that if I was careful and held the bevel of the chisel against the bottom of the bowl, nothing bad would happen and it didn't! That was almost six years ago and I've been doing it this way ever since. I've never been sorry about it and I've never made a major mistake with it. Once in awhile if the nub breaks half-way, I will stop and finish on the bench. No point in taking chances! 😊
