One of my FAVORITE days on a Harley-Davidson | Utah ADV Rides: The Burr Trail | Solo Motorcycle Trip

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

After 11 years of riding only cruiser-style motorcycles, I’m finally fulfilling a childhood dream of riding motorcycles off road, except I’m doing it on a big, heavyweight adventure bike! On this solo motorcycle trip, I’m riding a 2021 Harley Davidson PanAmerica 1250 Special. Today is my first time ever taking an adv bike on an off-road route, and I’ll be doing it completely alone. My goal was to ride the Burr Trail (a partially paved, partially unpaved scenic route that connects Boulder, Utah to Bullfrog and Lake Powell, with plenty of scenic views of Capitol Reef National Park) and then head over to a few other unpaved roads in the state….but my plan went VERY unplanned. Being a new adv rider definitely comes with some big mistakes and some lessons to learn, and I'm here for all of it!

I think eventually the haters will be criticising the choice to turn around. So to get in before that, maybe if they were 5'4" and not confident of clearing an obstacle in BFE and didn't want to pick up a borrowed 650lb motorcycle in a muddy river by themselves, then they might also turn around 🤷🏼‍♂️

I think eventually a lot of grown men will be telling me what to do with my life like they do in every single one of my videos. It’s comical. 😂 but the reality is, I made the right choice, even if the peanut gallery disagrees. Having had professional training and tons of experience on the PanAm since this was filmed over a year ago…I can confidently say I can do it now, and back then it would’ve been a dumb decision to cross that muddy mess. But, I’ll be here with my popcorn waiting for the rotten tomato comments. 😂😂😂🤙

@@ridetofood Smart choice to not get stuck in the mud. Attempting a recovery of a huge, heavy and very expensive ADV stuck in mud, while alone? Nope. That said, the scales tip towards sending it and hoping for the best if it was a smaller bike on knobby tires. I'd remove the hard cases just in case.

Wow! That's what I have to start with. I've been riding over 50 years and logged thousands of miles and I can say you are much more than a pretty good rider . When I saw that washout coming up I said "oh sh$t! Turning around was the smart thing to do. Being alone and dropping it in the middle would have been worse than turning around and having to ride back in the sand and being sooo hungry. Your determination and sense of adventure impress the hell out of me. The scenery was incredible. So glad you made it back to a hotel and real food! Thanks again for videos

Just amazing! Coming off the beach completely cold, jumping on a 650 lbs ADV bike and hitting the sand. Quite possibly the most challenging terrain to ride a big bike through. Once again showing me why you are one of my heroes. Your decision to turn around given all of the negatives was, I am sure, very hard but it was the correct decision. Thank you so much for bringing me along.

As someone who is stubborn and hates when plans don’t go as planned…this entire day was definitely a learning experience on a number of levels. 😂🤙 glad you enjoyed it! Even a year after this was filmed…I’ve ridden in much deeper sand and I still don’t like it, lol!!!

I’m really impressed with the great scenery of this series! However, I’m just as equally impressed with your bravado in taking a borrowed bike into new territory! Your decision to turn around and not push yourself truly shows how strong and smart you are. It would have been so easy to edit out anything negative. I’m really glad that I found your channel and subscribe to it. Each video I watch gives me ideas of places to travel and enjoy some of that fantastic food you find!

That was a seriously impressive ride, it takes a lot of self confidence / nerve to push yourself that far out of your comfort zone and let's not forget ...on a borrowed bike! Turning round at the washed out road was an extremely smart move... for all the reasons you gave. Great video, thank you.

Speaking as an ADV rider (who has crashed my bike several times now) the correct choice is always the choice you are comfortable with - so you made the right choice at the wash out (especially since it is not your bike). One option that I will add (that a lot of new ADV riders overlook - I did as well) is simply walking the bike through tough spots. Put it in first gear, lean a hip in and just slowly walk it to a rideable spot. Still probably not an option in the wash out with your size, the weight of the bike and the street tires and your skill level off road, but it does work well in those tricky spots where you want to/have to get to the end of a route. Amazing footage - Utah is stunning.

  • @ridetofood

Yeah, I considered the walking method. It wasn’t the best option. 😂 thanks. Glad you enjoyed it!

I think the Pan America is an awesome bike for you! That cushy suspension is golden on dirt roads. A pack I used to hang with got frustrated with me cause I couldn't/wouldn't keep up and so we went our separate ways. Last summer they had two accidents where a broken rider had to be air-lifted out of the mountains. It's your game, play it your way :)

No shame in turning around and much better than getting hurt and/or stranded. When I road to Alaska I turned around on the Dalton Hwy. I had wanted to make it to the Artic Circle but the road was much rougher than I was used to, I was alone, and those stories of crazy truckers flying by proved to be true. I figured that if I crashed or broke down I’d end up being bear chow! You did great getting as far as you did given all of the sand!

I think we all know our skill level and we all push beyond our riding ability, it’s our road to improvement! Safe and sane should be our approach, and common sense when riding outside our comfort zone and skill level,. You did great! Great vid, keep them coming! Based on your Arkansas ride, I ordered the Ark guide, and following your route this summer , from NorCal. Ride safe!

Wicked awesome video and I'm already looking forward to your next adventure! Oh, yeah, Utah backroads are always sandy or muddy! And the roads be always like, "Get off that bike and stay a while!" Good on ya for a smart decision. Those road washes can be bottomless muck pits that will not let go of your bike if you tip over. The views go on forever! And there's always next time!

Haha yeah, the mud was stiiiiicky and slick. It’s impossible to show that in a video though. Watched a car almost take its bumper off then spin out trying to go up the wash. That was when I called it and said “that’s a big no for me dawg.” Can’t wait to give it another go, though!!!

Happy New Year, Staci! Good dry bread can be found “under the bridge” in Mexican Hat. It’s not technically “under it,” but the road goes down to the restaurant/motel on the Mexican Hat side. I get mine with the stew. I think I mentioned this last time, but I stayed in the same place in Boulder! Re: the river crossing… you have to trust your gut, even if you probably could have done it. Street tires in mud… not good. I’ve balked on stuff others would consider easy when my gut was saying, don’t do it! Was I a wimp? perhaps, but I was a wimp that didn’t crash trying to do something he knew he shouldn’t There was no wash out when I did the Burr Trail, so I had it easy! I don’t recall as much sand as you had. There was mikes of it, but really shallow, I put on a tail cam to catch my rooster tail and did about 55. I share your fear of sand. You did some ADV training a few months back IIRC. So you’re well on your way. 😊👍

I, too, am new to ADV riding. I have many years and many miles under my ass, and I agree that riding an adventure bike is a totally different animal. Since buying my new 2022 Pan Am Special, I have enjoyed both on and off-road riding and find the new-found ability to explore new areas fantastic. Living in Utah gives me plenty of opportunity to enjoy my Pan Am, and as you said I also need to enroll in a riding course to further improve my off-road skills. I really enjoy your channel and wish you luck in all your endeavors!!!

Awesome video! Don't feel bad, you didn't miss out on much. Mostly just hardpack road after Bullfrog Creek headed towards Ticaboo and Bullfrog Basin. Did this ride from the opposite side in late September of last year. It was pretty rough and I smashed by bashplate making it over the other side of the creek haha (Suzuki V-Strom 1000 ground clearance for the lose lol). Easier said than done on a big ADV bike. No need to get yourself hurt in BFE! Gotta trust your instincts for sure!

lol! yeah, the gopro never does the reality justice. It was muddy, slick, and definitely steep on both sides of the wash. I watched a couple of cars cross, and they all nearly took their front bumpers off entering, and spun their tires on the way out. There was plenty of logical reasoning behind my decision to do what was best for me in the moment. I'm a pretty stubborn person...I wanted to find a way to cross pretty friggin bad lol! I was there in October of 2021...so sounds like it hasn't improved much and/or has been pretty washed out again!

You were right to turn around when you did. Walking on the riverbed may have seemed firm but rolling through a saturated wash could have easily left you buried up to the skid plate. As a man, that’s one of the reasons I ride solo; usually too much ego and testosterone when you ride with a bunch of guys and rational thought goes out the window. Did a 3500-mile loop through California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, and Arizona last September; stayed a night at the Motel 6 in Green River and ate at the Tamarisk. Pretty much the best meal around plus a nice view of the River.

I would have went through the creek but that's me. Best choice you can make in those situations is the one you know will get you home safe. If you aren't comfortable with the situation don't try it. Better to learn at your own pace and risk breaking the bike or yourself.
