One Of Mayer's Most Important & Underrated Amps - The '64 Fender Vibroverb | The Ultimate Guide
Ойын-сауық
Today we go over the full history and details on what I think is one of John Mayer’s most important amps that doesn’t get the recognition or discussion it deserves. The 1964 Fender Vibroverb.

Great video and cameo by Jake!
You can still find a vintage 60s pro reverb at an ok price, pretty much the same amp except a 2x12 cab instead of 1x15. That DRH clip was hot! Great video!
I love the vibroverb. I’m still on the hunt for a 64 custom and holding out hope for a real vintage one! I’ve always been under the impression that a vibroverb is basically a 40w deluxe reverb. Also what makes the custom shop/SRVs personal amps was they were modded by Cesar Diaz he implemented a solid state rectifier/disengaged the vibrato and bypassed the normal channel for more gain. Truly a unique amp.

If you want to build your own, the Pro Reverb is the identical circuit except the output transformer impedance. Super Reverbs (without their speakers) can occasionally be found cheap for a VV build. I built mine from a '75 Super Reverb, a chopped up Bassman 10 cabinet, and a vintage Jensen C15N.
I played a 1964 Vibroverb that recently showed up at my local GC. Holy smokes it really does the thing. That circuit with a 15' speakers sounds incredible. You questioned why John used input 2 instead of 1 during the aftershow in 2003. And after playing it I noticed that input 1 had slightly more gain than input 2. Sounded like the low-end would break up sooner than on channel 2. If you push volume past 3 on both channels it will start to break up slightly. At 6 - 7 it really starts to overdrive. I bet John played it at volume 3 - 4 input 2 If I had $5000 laying around I'd buy it in an instant.

That’s an awesome experience! What speaker did it have? Mine has the JBL and it is just incredible sounding through it!
Mans really shot and edited a whole video just to flex a new amp 🤣 Joking aside, great video, you can definitely hear the tonality the Vibroverb imparts on John's tone, especially listening to Jake's clips. Cheers!

your guy jake has sensational touch and feel. Shoutouts to that
That Hotel Cafe performance is epic! I listen to it frequently!
Just got a 1966 Fender Bandmaster, beautiful amp, wanted it for a while now. Ironic because yes it’s cool that Mayer plays it but I wanted it because there are clips of Eric Gales (my favorite electric player) with it with KILLER tone. It’s basically a Vibroverb but with more clean headroom because it has no Reverb! Perfect!
I was at that Boston show for that Everybody Wants to Rule the World performance! Then entire show overall was at a different level than the rest of the tour. The first of two shows in Boston combined with it being the second to last show on the tour was a recipe for magic that night!!

I was also at that show and the Pittsburgh show and a Pittsburgh blew that away. It was still a great show but was a very different vibe.
Scary pockets with DRH, too!! 🔥🙌🤤
I’d assume he would be using input two for the db cut since it seemed like a smaller room.

DB cut some, but more importantly more clean headroom
If anyone is looking for a hand-wired BF Vibroverb clone I would highly recommend Lil Dawg Amps. I had a 5e3 from him and the wiring and finishing is top notch. Not bad prices either! I've often thought of getting a Vibroverb made up in a Princeton size chassis with a 1x12.
Mayer has soul, I can only imagine all the relationship pain he's been through.
Hey justin! great video, do you know what speaker John has in his vibroverb?
One other notable performance it's also when he sat in with Dave Stewart and Orianthi at the Troubadour in Los Angeles. It almost looks like he's plugged Street in to the amp because right before he goes into his solo he turns up his volume on the amp
@JustinJeske

That was a Deluxe Reverb, not a Vibroverb! Great performance though
Wouldn't say this amps is undedrated even if it is John Mayers. Cool video 📹 😎
A Black panel Vibroverb will be pretty close (tonestack and output transformer wise) to a black panel Pro reverb if you want to get in on the sound but not the price tag.
The 2nd inputs have a lower output and cleans up very well in high volumes.
Thanks for connecting with me!
Does your VV reissue have the Cesar Diaz mod? I think the early 2000s reissues had them.
I am curious as to what speaker Jake has in his reissue and John Mayer is using in his. I have a AA763 (#3 made in January 1964) that came with a JBL (I am second owner, acquiring it in 1991). The JBL is a one-trick pony and is favorable to Fender single coils and unforgiving with humbuckers, IMHO. I currently have an Eminence 1518 that sounds great, but am left wondering which speakers the big artists are using in these.
The blackface vibroverb is cool… but the best sounding one is the 63, or the brownface era one. Unreal light overdrive tone, if dialed in right it’ll get you hired real quick!
JM and JT… im afraid to ask who else also tops your list as well as mine haha
Do we know if John was using a vibroverb when be backed DRH in 2022? He sounds great in those performances

Yes, that is what he used with DRH & Scary Pockets last year
I was at John's SOLO show in Vancouver on April 10th. He played acoustic most of the night, but he played his PRS Silver Sky for a short section of the show. The amps on stage included a Vibroverb and a Dumble Overdrive Special.
Congrats on the new amp! Do you know what speaker John uses in his Vibroverb?

I’ll have to dive into his settings and experiment with those, but he always uses the Vibrato Channel, the first input. (Save for the first example in the video)

@@JustinJeske Thank you Justin. looking forward to that. Also just curious, has John Mayer ever commented here, or have you met him yet???
Never ever heard anyone refer to a Vibroverb as "underrated". Have a VERY nice one on my channel.
To me, playing through Fender amps myself and then hearing John play through those same amps, you can really hear how much tone really is in the hands. I've played or owned a lot of the great amps that Mayer has used over the years (Vibroverb, HRRI Deluxe, vintage Deluxe, various Two Rocks) and for me it's so deflating to hear how much better he sounds than me. That said, I'm not drowning in my sorrows or anything, because I haven't been playing guitar for hours a day for 4 decades like he has, but still, when you hear how great he sounds, even through lowly Fenders, you can really tell how great and unique his technique is.

Is there really much difference between the clean tones on all these different fender amps? For me I cannot distinguish
@stryguy
Жыл бұрын
@@DOKITT While they are certainly all quite similar (being that not only are they all Fender's but even more so that they're all specifically from the blackface era/circuits), yes, in my experience/opinion they still have different independent personalities and nuances. I own a '64 Vibroverb, '65 Super and an Alessandro DRRI and I appreciate each of them individually/for different reasons.

You want the early 60s Fenders with the harmonic tremolo, 61-63. It's a way cooler effect than just tremolo or "vibrato" in Fender terms.
Any chance that, that (or one of the vibroverbs) are Dumble Modded?
@jstnjstnjstnjstn
Жыл бұрын
to my knowledge Mr. Dumble has not made any amps for Mayer. I beleive all of the amps Mayer owned with purchased second hand. I could be wrong, prove me wrong.
Is John Vibroverb stock or modded? Different speaker?
I wonder what would make him pick the Deluxe Reverbs over the Vibroverb?

If you want a little more headroom than a deluxe reverb but don't want to lug around a bandmaster, this is your amp

hahaaa great easter egg
Not so sure the Vibroverb is all that underrated ... More like, overpriced because people really want one. I got to play a brand new reissue and was not at all impressed with it. But this one sounds real fine. Vibroverbs are essentially, Super Reverbs with a 1X15 which can be created by changing the OT in a SR to an 8 OHM and installing a 1X15 baffle and a JBL or a Weber 15A150. Personally, I would also change out the power tubes to 5881's, specifically Tung-Sols.
Why did the prs jmod flop
Genuinely upset you posted this because I’m saving for one and this won’t help the prices 😢
He uses it because SRV used them.

"Under-rated" is THE most over-used descriptor in videos (and comments) posted relating to music. It's gotten comical. An amp, for example, can NEVER be over- or under-rated - it's a tool, like a paintbrush. Some are wide, some are narrow , some have a fine point. HUGE hits and immortal recordings have employed el cheapo amps, and flops you never heard were done with the "best" and most expensive amps. All that matters is if the amp is right for the recording...
